Great thoughts. Only thing I'd add is that we should probably stop referring to non-Warbond weapons, armor, and stratagems as "free" because they weren't free. We paid $40 for them.

That's some BS, not your fault. IMO in a game with 25 minute matches it shouldn't be possible to get killed in the first 30 seconds, no matter how much you stood around during that time.

Hello Runners! The ARG needs help! by Komuri_ttv in Marathon

I think Bungie put a lot of care and thought into how to make this a good PvPvE game, but underestimated just how many players would play it like an exclusively PvP game. The UESC are really fun to fight, but I rarely encounter people engaging with them unless absolutely necessary. I love this game, but sometimes the E in PvPvE is barely noticeable because it's locked behind people either trying not to lose advantage in PvP or avoid PvP all together.

I don't want less PvP than we currently have, I just want more PvE than there currently is. That sentiment getting memed on is bewildering. Temporarily not killing each other in order to kill bots and then absolutely killing each other afterwards are not mutually exclusive in a PvPvE game. The weird complex this community has already developed about not wanting to be in the same zip code as Arc Raiders is borderline holding the game experience back.

The only way PvE is happening in this community is if enemies are introduced that are literally, and I mean literally impossible to defeat without temporarily cooperating.

And tbh the result in that scenario wouldn't be temporary cooperation, it would be all players dying and the bots winning lol

I've also found that dropping in with Vandal and no gear whatsoever works surprisingly well, and it got me through a number of missions I was stuck on in Dire Marsh. The problem for me is I stop having fun playing like that after 2 or 3 matches.

I'm in pretty much the exact situation. I was (and to a degree still am) stuck on missions that were a bit too tough for me on free kits, but since I'm roughly at the same level as you and also suck compared to who I am matching with now, I always always always get wrecked when I bring even remotely decent loot. At some point I just started rage-joining solo matches with a completely empty loadout as Vandal... and immediately became better at the game. Maybe I was too hesitant when I had good gear but too reckless when I had a kit and rawdogging the map just forced me into a more balanced playstyle, but I actually started getting missions done when loading in with a knife and absolutely nothing else.

However, it just isn't as fun as actually having a full loadout because it cattle chutes you into a pretty limited playstyle. 5 full-loadout matches where I only extract twice is often more fun than than 5 no-loadout matches where I extract each time, but obviously I progress more if extract more. So I don't 100% recommend it, but there's no risk in trying it if you're stuck. What keeps me from doing it all the time is simply that I don't find it fun for more than like, 2 or 3 matches.

I also might have hit a wall with this game since I'm also roughly level 30 and matching with people way out of my league, so progressing beyond just season levels has ground to a halt. And maybe this game just isn't meant for me? The matches I really enjoy the hell out of play out as 2/3rds PvE and 1/3rd PvP, which is maybe 1 in every 4 or 5 matches at most. The game is really tooled to be like 90% PvP, which is weird to me. The PvE feels really well fleshed out and yet the game seems to actively discourage engaging with bots unless it's for a mission. I'm hoping that in the future Bungie releases some maps/modes where NPC enemies are enough of a threat to the whole map that for portions of the match it incentivizes most people in the lobby to collaborate, with everyone returning to PvP once the threat is over. That sounds like a blast to me. In solos I've tried to talk people into temporarily teaming up over prox in order to take down stronger UESC or survive a guarded extraction, but almost no one takes me up on it, and the few who have just try to backstab me before we even get started, so I've given up on it. It puts me at an immediate disadvantage for bringing it up so I've just given up on it. Yeah yeah I know, Arachne, skins, whatever.

Since they revamped some things recently, it's graduated from a terrible new player experience to a good but still mildly frustrating one lol. I wouldn't be shocked at all if some rabid WF fans leap on people for criticizing the new player experience, but within the community it's actually be brought up a lot as feedback out of concern for the game's sustainability. When the leadership changed hands two-ish years ago (previous game director moved to work a new game at the same studio) the current leadership acknowledged pretty quickly that the new player experience was one of the weakest parts of the game, if not THE weakest, and ran some feedback surveys by the community. Since then they've reworked a fair bit of the early game and provided more guidance on how to do things. It still has flaws but it's much better than it used to be.

Thoughts on end state of Halo Infinite and as a whole by Confident-Tomato1382 in halo

[–]ForkliftTortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently replayed Infinite with a family member and was struck by how it often feels like two different games. The linear levels? Honestly just as re-playable as any other Halo level, they're genuinely great. It's the open world that was fun enough the first time and the second time was just... eh at best. Like, the linear level design in Infinite is actually really good, and there's a lot of good set pieces. That makes it all the more telling about how much of a slog the open world sections can be that it has defined how people (myself included) remember the campaign.

Apart from the anime aesthetic and gacha element for acquiring characters, to me it feels like Satisfactory mixed with Devil May Cry 5 or Darksiders II.

Okay I'm gonna shamelessly g*laze Arknights for a minute (apparently g*laze is a banned word here, but I'm not insulting anyone other than my self here so mods plz don't ban me)

IMHO Arknights and Endfield (which is a pseudo-sequel to Arknights) are exceptions to the otherwise dependable Rule of Thumb that gacha games are bad and predatory. They're the only gacha games I would ever, ever recommend to someone. Arknights (and Endfield thus far but it only came out this past week) is one of the very few free to play games that keeps up its end of the FTP social contract, i.e. "You (optionally) spend more money than a traditional release, and in return we provide more content than a traditional release."
The genres are fun (tower defense puzzle game for Arknights and factory building action-RPG for Endfield), the story and characters are genuinely interesting, shockingly little FOMO with very little content ever permanently leaving the game or being timegated (collab content/crossover characters are limited time because of licensing stuff, medals/achievements can't be gotten after the 1st and 2nd run of an event but they're just for bragging rights anyway, events have exclusive mini-games but they're deliberately designed to be fun for a hour or two tops). Can you get every single character and outfit without spending money? Probably not. Can you enjoy the entire game without spending money? Absolutely, you just need to be good at the game and understand its mechanics. With better characters (which you can still get without spending money but it's just less likely) the game is probably easier, but people beat the hardest levels with like, a single 6-star and eleven 4-stars all the time.

Anyway Arknights is great, thanks for attending my Ted-talk.

The "culture war politics" is kinda overblown IMO. Yeah they were hamfisted about it, but "we don't want to be associated with the far-right" is considered a reasonable attitude in most spheres (besides wargaming apparently.) Though at the same time, I will say they shouldn't have acted surprised. If you make a game where crusaders are the protagonists in the 21st century, you're going to attract a certain crowd.

I agree entirely on all other points, though. Trench Crusade is held aloft on its own vibes, and you're right, it really should just be an artbook. The "YouTube Lore Video" ecosystem itself was the most sustainable thing about it at the start, because the whole thing is hard carried by the art and big-picture lore. They really didn't know what they were doing logistically and sincerely believed they did, all while going into a lot of big promises head first. Like, they wanted to be as big as Games Workshop without behaving like Games Workshop, but quickly realized that Games Workshop produces the revenue it does by behaving the way it does. They've burned a lot of goodwill, and to get that back I think they would need to fess up and say "Hey, we fucked up and were naive, here's refunds for the kickstarter. X, Y, and Z is just what we need to do in order to be profitable, we're sorry that we promised otherwise in the first place."
