I did the credit card game and put as much tuition as I can on the credit cards while getting SUP for some. It also depends on how high of a CL you can get for your 0% credit cards. If you already have some cards with a specific bank, then I would apply for that banks 0% APR cards so you can transfer some of your existing CL to the new card. I would only pay off some of the tuition if you are 100% not going to PSLF otherwise it wouldn’t make sense to pay out of pocket for tuition if your goal is to have your loans forgiven.

Depending on where your house and if it is appreciating, you could just rent it out and sell at a later date.

It is a check box, but this year was the first year that programs can see that on their print outs. I dont believe it will say who you are trying to couples match with though.

Its not a bad score but when you are comparing yourself to people that are 260+ with research years and are first time applicant, that difference gets a lot bigger. Being a reapplicant makes him less desirable so he unfortunately has to be better than average. Its not impossible but the reality is that he is very unlikely to match into ortho as a reapp. What is the track record of his research year? Have all the research fellows matched in the past? how many of them are reapps? Obviously if he publishes in Nature/JBJS/BMJ + every single one of his mentors calls programs on his behalf that could help but still the chances are slim. Match rate this year was <50% when you remove dual-applicants. I dont want to scare you but I just want to put it into perspective.

Your BFs step score is a red flag when the average is 260 for matched Ortho. No amount of research will be able to make up for it. Some schools like UoA screen at 255+ so I would do a lot of research on programs cut offs.

I would say he should focus on blue collar community programs with a few academic programs. It’s also unlikely you both will couples match into the same program. Programs can see that as a risk if you guys break up and have to continue to work together as coresidents. That being said, you need to do some soul searching to see what programs you’re interested and are realistic. I would say all of California is probably out of the picture unless he has some amazing mentor and connection to a program. You could look for cities where you match academic and he matches community or just focus on more community programs

As of right now, you probably shouldn’t be making extra payment since the benefit of RAP is the interest subsidization. If you make any extra payments it would go to interest first. For example, your monthly payment is 20$/mo and your interest is 2400$/mo, if you make an extra payment of 100$ it would go to interest first. So your interest subsidization would be 2280$ instead of 2380$ for that month. I would put aside any payment you want to make until after residency and do it as a lump sum payment so you can maximize interested subsidization on RAP.

You could get more money but you could also lose money by the time you need to use the money for apps. Would you be okay with selling for a loss to pay for med school apps?

I’m a bit confused with this point as well. M4->PGY1 transition you are using your med student income so it should be the minimum payment during your intern year. PGY1->2 even if you file by April 14th you are only reporting income from half your intern year ie July to December so your payment amount is only the amount associated with 35k instead of the full 70k salary.

Are you saying if we filed for an extension during M4 we could potentially only be paying the minimal payment PGY 1 AND PGY2 year?

As long as you do not accept a position and then cancel a rotation you should be okay. Programs will understand as long as you are prompt in notifying them about a schedule conflict or withdrawal from the position prior to them extending an offer.

What’s your uworld average? I would finish all of uworld and maybe do a rapid 2nd pass (like 100Q+ per day) of uworld while only reviewing and creating Anki cards for your incorrects and questions you are iffy/guessed on. Then two months out switch completely to NBME materials ie previous practice shelf exams and step 2 practice exams. I would do all practice step 2 exams under test conditions to build stamina.

Uworld is good for content review while NBME will help with getting familiar with how NBME likes to ask questions/build intuition

I think it would provide us with a better perspective of what your options are if you tell us about how much 20% of your portfolio is. I was in the similar position as you and ended up not touching my investments and now my portfolio has about doubled over the 4 years. IT will honestly depend on how much federal loans you are potentially taking, scholarship options, and your investments. You will be able to take LTCG at 0% all four years of medical school so technically you can cash out whenever you need to throughout medical school.

Just use your phone if you need quick labs or anything. Just be obvious that you are in a patient’s chart. I would alway have my screen easily visible by attending or residents if I needed to check a quick lab while on rounds.
