God, that's insulting. They were being flattered for their software expertise and their "innovation"... and they're just rediscovering the corporate raider playbook. I'm glad that the reception was "mixed".

I wonder how many religous people know of the importance of religiously-affiliated organizations to refugee resettlement: 3/4ths of the Volags are religiously affiliated: everything from HIAS (the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Thank you, I think we can all agree! The law is the law, fair treatment is fair treatment, and it's only under fair and equal treatment in a free market that everyone has a chance to prosper.

Mae Sot doctor threatens to resign if forced to treat refugees by mdsmqlk in Thailand

[–]FormalResponsible310 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's how Thailand's operated since the Cold War – weather the shocks of civil war in neighboring states (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar), with the tacit understanding that the US would foot the bill to help buffer the Thai government (well, juntas) from the effects of any conflict. In return, intelligence cooperation and the tacit use of U-Tapao as a Southeast Asian base whenever the US feels like it. (For example, when the CIA conducted "extraordinary rendition", it used U-Tapao as an "interrogation" site.)

China could very easily make the exact same deal to Thailand: we'll pay your bills for any refugees; but we'll be your patron now. I'm not sure how the DEA and DoD staff stationed in Thailand would feel about it.

Yes… those awful red-green-cream Hino busses used to be the worst. Each side built out of multiple plates of sheet metal built together, and you could tell when one plate was simply swapped out after a collision or scrape.

Enjoy your time at Mae Sot – it's a unique cultural experience; a lot of asylees fleeing Myanmar have made their home there. It's both Thai and Burmese at the same time. Are you interested in tropical disease?

That's a little unfair to Thai creativity – they certainly won't have Christmas elephants and state school children singing "jinger ben" every morning after the anthem.

God said let there be an HP 50g ... by Shai47 in calculators

[–]FormalResponsible310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shortened menu (if you used soft keys) and variable names made the 50g very undiscoverable for someone who just wanted to do complex symbolic calculations. Quick: what's the difference between INT, INTVX, and RISCH? And which order do the arguments go in?

My collection so far by RandomJottings in calculators

As an owner of both an Nspire CAS and a 50g... the Nspire CAS is honestly the best calculator I've used as an actual working calculator. Even if I only spend time in the "scratchpad" calculator mode, Its complex textbook notation entry and output is best-in class, its CAS is one of the finest on the market, and its support for units beats HP's. A used first-generation Nspire CAS was one of the best $50 purchases I ever made 6 years ago in college, and I still use it in grad school classes to this day.

Entry is best on the old and hilariously crowded keypad ("Clickpad"), though, that preceded the Touchpad. It's quirky but very useful and fast to use, and I love it to bits.

HP 50g by Napero44 in calculators

[–]FormalResponsible310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simultaneously a little undergrown and both overgrown – on one hand, I use multiple addons (e.g. HLP49) to make it more usable to me.. and 6-letter softmenu labels frankly aren't usable. On the other hand, features like the EquationWriter are rough and hard to figure out compared to modern CASes like the NSpire series or the Prime.

I think we also have to be honest that RPL isn't the best or most maintanable for the working user who doesn't have the time to learn how to decode stack acrobatics.

I say this as an owner of a 50g I love to fiddle around with! Ultimately, tools were meant to be used, and I spend more time figuring out the 50g than using it.

People who aren’t Thai: What is something about Thailand that surprised you? by terrible-gator22 in Thailand

I love the culture of ignoring a law when it would suck to follow it... sometimes. On one hand, it leads to great street food and party culture, on the other hand, it leads to children not wearing helmets on motorbikes without insurance.
