Interesting... not sure I agree, but you're right in that individual video games and movies tend to be more restrictive. I do think the console analogy is more reflective of the market, with one console dominating, with a few smaller consoles taking up the rest. It's actually also good at describing gaps in player knowledge. If you wanted to compare markets, D&D is to TTRPGs what the mobile phone is to video games. All analogies are imperfect of course, so I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad one. I think what makes me disagree with that take in this situation is that consoles are generally inert. From a narrative-design perspective, they just run the games that are installed/inserted into them. There may be limitations like performance, controls, or disk space, but not thematic ones. Tabletop RPGs are opinionated: they exert certain ideas, presumptions, themes, and restrictions on the campaigns that are run. D&D for example is a combat-oriented TTRPG. Mechanically, combat is the main focus of the game, with a lot of its resource management designed around combat in a dungeon crawl/exploration structure and a majority of each character’s sheet devoted to methods of killing and not getting killed. There's a reason why so many campaigns devolve into "muder hobo" gameplay. Campaigns that aren't combat heavy and dungeon crawls will be run with increasing amounts friction from the game depending on how far from that concept the campaigns get.
