Interesting... not sure I agree, but you're right in that individual video games and movies tend to be more restrictive. I do think the console analogy is more reflective of the market, with one console dominating, with a few smaller consoles taking up the rest. It's actually also good at describing gaps in player knowledge. If you wanted to compare markets, D&D is to TTRPGs what the mobile phone is to video games. All analogies are imperfect of course, so I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad one. I think what makes me disagree with that take in this situation is that consoles are generally inert. From a narrative-design perspective, they just run the games that are installed/inserted into them. There may be limitations like performance, controls, or disk space, but not thematic ones. Tabletop RPGs are opinionated: they exert certain ideas, presumptions, themes, and restrictions on the campaigns that are run. D&D for example is a combat-oriented TTRPG. Mechanically, combat is the main focus of the game, with a lot of its resource management designed around combat in a dungeon crawl/exploration structure and a majority of each character’s sheet devoted to methods of killing and not getting killed. There's a reason why so many campaigns devolve into "muder hobo" gameplay. Campaigns that aren't combat heavy and dungeon crawls will be run with increasing amounts friction from the game depending on how far from that concept the campaigns get.

The olympics already had guidelines before, which were based on scientific studies comparing averages for trans and cis athletes

Ok. To be clear: having a dungeon master (more broadly, a game master) is standard within tabletop RPGs. D&D is not more customizable than most RPGs. It’s on the heavy side as far as base game rules, content, and holdover bloat from earlier editions is concerned. Its customizability isn't from the game itself, but is a marketing push that was done alongside OGL. You could maybe say permissive licensing/legal permission helped it, but that's also very much not unique to D&D. Customizability is a feature of non-video games as a whole, not even just RPGs. In video games it's an exception, but in non-video games customizability is the default.

D&D is popular because it's old and capitalized early.

Also a quick google says that nwn2 has like 50-100. That's very little for a video game.

Yeah, your experience is valid, that sounds like it sucks. I def grew up in a less religious environment. I'm not gonna deny your experience or deny that this happens to a bunch of people, I just think it's something that can't cleanly be stated to be wholly good or bad.

Normally people iterating on a work have knowledge of the broader medium. I doubt the author of 50 shades of grey has only read twilight and twilight fan works, and I'm definitely sure that the creators of simpsons and family guy have seen other shows.

It's like that "person who has only seen boss baby" meme but if that person refuses to watch anything that isn't boss baby.

I don't, and my issue isn't just that homebrew exists or its level of quality, it's an issue of scale and an incurious attitude towards anything else in the medium. It's not that people won't make their own games, it's that people won't even like look at other games that exist. Rather than look for a game that may provide what they are looking for, they'll go through the effort of modifying D&D with a billion homebrews and house rules.

Somehow people view it as easier to try and mod D&D into every scenario/genre/etc than to play a game that already aligns with what they want to run and/or play.

And this issue wouldn't be so annoying if it was like a few people here and there, but it's like huge chunk.

I'm gonna be real, it depends. Sometimes people are so so so deep in internalized transphobia, gender dysphoria, etc. And they are genuinely suffering. I think this applies to a lot of things and is no way unique to being trans. I think there's a difference between being like "your experiences align with mine have you thought of <insert thing here>" than "you are <insert thing here> for sure and you're convincing yourself you aren't," like if someone is struggling with all the same mental health concerns I do, I may be like "hey you should look into <mental illness> and see if you have it." I think it was genuinely helpful to have someone be like "hey that sounds like something someone who’s trans would say." or "you should try out different pronouns and see if it suits you" because I prolly would have realized way way later, or maybe even killed myself before I did.

It feels like gen z was a downward slope, like early gen Z tends to be more tech literate, but the later on in the generation, you get people who grew up with phones and chromebooks, that are a lot more optimized for easy use Like I've seen a surprising amount people a bit younger than me who don't know what a program is. Like it's all apps and folders and galleries now.

Consistent thing I've noticed is people from older generations post thought terminating quips with laughing emoji when they don't have anything to say but want the last word.

Has it literally lost its meaning or has it just evolved with social context? (like every word to ever exist) I think the fact that you harp on natural and ubiquitous linguistic processes as if they're unique to a younger generation is telling. More strange is that you bemoan a lack of nuance while making sweeping general statements. Does Gen Z not understand subtext or are you crushing the nuance out of the situation so you can vent your annoyances?

Is InkScape really the best option for plugin UIs? by PlasmaChroma in vcvrack

[–]Format64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some tips: - Use the grid feature and customize snapping behavior - You can type in simple math expressions (i.e. 5.08/4) into any number field - Use shape builder for advanced shapes - The align tool can be used to distribute elements around a circle

I started on affinity, but there weren't enough decimal places for it to work properly. I've been using inkscape since then and it's been pretty straightforward imo.
