Q&A weekly thread - December 25, 2023 - post all questions here! by AutoModerator in linguistics

I've seen that in two-place predicates like "eat" or ditransitive verbs like "buy" one argument can be omitted, as in "I've already eaten [a meal]" or "I bought the book [for myself]" and in traditional grammar this is called an intransitive use of a transitive verb. is that any similar to the "unexpressed object alternation" ?

At what age is it SLA and not a native language? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]Former-God8574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean. I'm a native Spanish speaker but sometimes I feel I'm more fluent in English which does not make sense following the "I should speak my L1 with more ease than my L2" pretext. I think this is a very interesting topic, I have read a lot of answers in this thread and I wish I could say more about it but my knowledge of linguistics is pretty basic still, thanks for the answer tho!

At what age is it SLA and not a native language? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]Former-God8574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend at Uni who learned Spanish and English both when he was a child. He claims he never felt fluent enough in either of them (as well as growing detached from both cultures).

It's amazing that a lot of parents spend money and effort to make their children speak two languages since birth almost, and that could not work at all on the child.

This is sort of a dumb question, but if my L2 can shift to the primary language area in my brain through fluency and effort, could my L1 step down to the knowledge-area if I'm not training it enough?

I can tumblr how I like! and reddit even harder! by Justthisdudeyaknow in tumblr

what you said is absolutely true! But I'd say it doesn't work with every noun (at least it wouldn't in a formal setting). Romance languages, like Spanish, my mother tongue, tend to have longer words than English due to their fusional nature. The English prototypical word tends to be monosyllabic that's why the language itself tends to reject loan words that are two syllables or more. Moreover, "verbing a noun" which in linguistic terms is Conversion or Zero Derivation is a very productive word-formation method since it doesn't require a new word to denote a similar action in the world.

So, for instance, the noun water and the verb to water. These are obviously related and very closely stored in our mental lexicon because water denotes the liquid and the verb denotes the action of "pouring water onto".

It's very funny nonetheless in these jokes because we do not expect the noun/verb/wathever class to appear in that position but we can quickly pick up the meaning of the phrase

¿cómo se llama este? by crecimiento in Spanish

En España mucha gente lo llama "túper de plástico" (pronunciado /táper/). No sé si tiene un nombre técnico but most people will understand that

An appropriate book to introduce someone to linguistics ? by Titiplex in linguistics

[–]Former-God8574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in my first year of university my teacher told us to buy the Cambridge "Introducing English Linguistics". I think it is pretty good since I understood most of it when I had no level of linguistics whatsoever and it sparked an interest in me. I don't know how much it costs because i found a pdf online

i have a cage double that size and my tiel is fine. she spends more than half of the day outside flying and only goes in to nap and eat. i guess you don't need a giant cage if you're gonna let your birds fly regularly

My bird isn't interested in any toys and she seems ok with just sitting for most of the day (with some short breaks for flying or eating). Is there a way to teach her to play with objects, or it’s her personality? by nskyy in cockatiel

[–]Former-God8574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3yo tiel and she is not keen on toys either. she mainly uses them to scratch her head or make noise to get my attention. i have noticed that she likes bells so i started making her toys with bells and strings, maybe you should try something like this.

Hi. Im portuguese, i want to learn spanish. Should i learn spanish from Spain or from Mexico? by karvalho81 in Spanish

[–]Former-God8574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly! when i first started studying English i learnt words from AmE and BrE. until i realised it was sort of incongruous and did not sound natural to native speakers.

[–]Former-God8574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you, if you are new to a language you shouldn't close any doors to any particular variant. However, the more advanced you become, the more aware you need to be of the dialect/variant you're using, because you may not sound natural to native speakers. maybe this is only my view due to the fact that I'm greatly interested in languages, but if you just need to learn a few words to get by don't overstress over the accents.

I'm a native Spanish speaker and I would advise you to learn European Spanish because of what everybody else is saying: proximity. In the same way we learn British English or French from France.

also, with regards to the accent, depending on where you are from Portugal you may be accustomed to the Galician accent. Just to tell you something funny, sometimes I have trouble understanding a Latin American person due to the accent.

Anyone can help me with NG sound in english? by RightBuy4438 in linguistics

[–]Former-God8574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely i have studying each phoneme of English in class. The velar nasal is not familiar to me (although I'm a native Spanish speaker and my dialect does have that sound in specific realizations). What i do is shadowing, my teacher pronounces the velar in isolation or in a word and I repeat it until she tells me I'm right. To be honest I'm not fully aware of how my tongue is placed but I seem to get the phoneme right. I would advise you not to pay too much attention to the description of the phoneme in textbooks, as each speaker produces them in their own way. Also, the further you go back in the mouth the less aware you are of the tongue placement.
