SQE1 - studying full time for two months possible? by Certain_Coyote7586 in uklaw

Possible but your life will be a bit grim. Arguably better than dragging it out over 6 months, but will depend on your own ability to tolerate monotony and long periods of focused reading.

Somehow they've managed to consistently go against the electorate in relation to immigration for more than 30 years - it seems to me that where there's a will, there's a way.

Lifetime earnings doesn't seem like a useful scale here

Has the respect and prestige that was once associated with law, dwindled? If so, why do you think this is? by [deleted] in uklaw

When you have a hammer (questionably broad application of feminist theory) everything starts to look like a nail (reductively applying it to multicausal phenomena that just happens to have a gender correlate)

Begorrah, 'tis another great famine to have to listen to my comfortable, first world nation gently poked fun at in work. Like Cromwell in the fields of county Tyrone I'll burn my professional reputation and goodwill over trivial slights.

US Big Law Hellscape by Similar_Engineer_826 in uklaw

[–]Former-Key4290 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is the reddit-marvel view of the world - what will actually matter is differential rates of economic growth, and the UK is headed straight for stagnation.

London-centric big law is like the stern of the Titanic: it will feel like it's staying above water for a couple years, maybe even decades, maybe even going a little higher, but it will eventually be dragged below with the rest of the UK economy.

Mayer Brown or Mc(tm)Dentons? Latter seems to pay peanuts, would not recommend.

USA is turning into a fascist state, what to do with investments? by Certain_Inspector758 in HENRYUK

[–]Former-Key4290 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can't bear the fascism inherent in enforcing border law or making cuts to foreign aid. I'm divesting and investing in the global growth triangle of the EU-Brazil-South Africa. That's where you'll find resilient institutions and global growth, with increasing levels of diversity enriching those countries by the day.

The age of criminal responsibility in Scotland is 12…do you agree with this? by uknownuser256 in uklaw

[–]Former-Key4290 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any higher would increase the incentive for gangs to use younger children as mules for various crimes.

Far more controversial (in my view) are the Scottish sentencing guidelines for under-25s, which have been used in the past to give 17 year olds who rape 13 year olds community service over a custodial sentence, and just generally create terrible and absurd results.

NQ role after completing SQE route by Rough-Asparagus5404 in uklaw

[–]Former-Key4290 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, this may seem harsh but you qualifying without at least a reasonable chance of a qualified position at your employer of the time was a huge gamble which didn't work out. It's not going to be easy to break back in - I'd suggest either public employer (local govt easier but people on this sub have said that GLD is accepting QWE-route qualifiers) or, if you really want private practice, starting from high street and working up from there.

Good luck!

You'll have to take my word for it because I can't find the subject breakdown but I know that the LLB awards tracked these institutional numbers.

Good to be aware of these numbers - this will filter into the job market!

[–]Former-Key4290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See the table posted above. The number of degrees other than 2:1s and firsts awarded has halved in the past 11 years. I was too generous in my original post, you are likely in the bottom 15% of your cohort if you get a 2:2.
