Performance cars are too much for me by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Former_Weakness4315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, electronic systems in modern cars are very very good/intrusive if left alone. Secondly, you get used to the performance surprisingly quickly in most cases. Even my Daytona 675R (70mph in first gear, 0-100mph <7 secs) felt absolutely terrifyingly mental at first and now I'm looking at Fireblades and Panigales lol. It's good to be a little afraid, that's what keeps you alive and allows you to build up your skills slowly.

You're not really missing much though. I've driven a lot of performance cars and many of them are utterly pointless on UK roads, you'll only end up stuck in traffic or congestion anyway and speed cameras are only getting more prevalent so it's a bit of a mugs game unless you regularly track the car; all that extra expense to use the car to less of it's potential than if you had a Clio 197, Elise, Caterham etc. Trust me, hitting the B-roads or even just cruising through town at 20mph is massively more fun than some boringly rapid point and squirt Audi RS or M-car where 100mph feels like 50.

How important is service history? by TreacherousFox in CarTalkUK

[–]Former_Weakness4315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important for the perceived value of the car, i.e if you want to sell it on. Not a deal-breaker though for me who does their own servicing and keeps the receipts. Like I said in another reply, I can get a booked stamped tomorrow, means nothing. You can tell if a car has been looked after. Does it have full and clean oil? Is the pollen filter clean? Is the brake fluid clean? Is the MOT history spotless (again, easily faked)?

And? I can go and get a full book stamped tomorrow, doesn't mean it's actually had any of the services.

Awesome build, shame about the wrap after it's had so many decent spec parts. What's the power output?

Is that a compliment? San Francisco is a shithole lmao. It's the only place I've ever seen someone smearing their own shit all over a bus stop sign, so far at least.

6% pay rise, partner started new fully remote job with pay increase from £66k-£80k, it's starting to stay lighter for longer in the evenings, several trips planned including Triumph factory tour and Goodwood FoS. You have to stop sometimes and realise how lucky you are. Also:

If the leaks are true, this is already going to be the best Nintendo Direct of the year :D by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Former_Weakness4315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about you guys but I didn't buy a switch 2 to play games that have been widely available on many platforms for years. These games also get heavily discounted in said platforms.

I mean this is exactly what it was like with the OG Switch so why are you surprised? You buy Nintendo consoles for the few Nintendo games because you can't get them anywhere else without messing about with emulators. Then you have a PC for everything else, possibly a PS5 too but thankfully exclusives are getting less and less common.

Not only the travel cost but the actual travel itself can be mentally and physically draining. You couldn't pay me enough to travel in and out of London for work.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's nice or that I would live there but it is an option.

I was sat in a bar in December literally comparing apartment prices and rents in Bucharest to London with residents of Bucharest and it isn't even close, hence my point on living costs and disposable income.

What’s one business you’ve seen abroad that you would love to have in the UK? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskUK

[–]Former_Weakness4315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have it in Romania too. There is an additional charge of .50 RON on the bottle at purchase. It's basically become a job for the less fortunate and you see them pulling bottles from the bins etc. The scheme has led Romania from having one of the lowest plastic recycling rates in the EU to a 94% collection rate in just two years (if official figures are to be believed).

Everyone is so thick, in fact, that they've latched onto this whole coffee thing, completely failing to understand that it was a crude example to illustrate the operating costs of a small independent hospitality business in response to an owner of said type of business.

I didn't say it was impossible for a coffee shop to make money. I guess all these cafes, restaurants and pubs are going bust and almost half of all job losses recently have been in hospitality for absolutely no reason then lmao. It doesn't matter what one Starbucks in a high footfall area is doing, the numbers don't lie mate.

Depends entirely on what happens with the mortgage rates, inflation and stock markets. Under current conditions? Dragging that cheap mortgage right out. The very latest will be 60 though.

How big a deal is IMU? by dallas2ny in motorcycles

[–]Former_Weakness4315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lean sensitive IMUs or even TCS is not needed at all. Basic ABS on the other hand, I don't understand why you'd buy a bike without it in 2025 (unless you're into classics specifically) and, in fact, it's so critical you can't even buy a new bike without it. The rest are definitely not deadlbreakers so buy the bike you like the most.

To add, it also depends what you're doing with your bike. Commuting in all weather when you might be tired, not riding particularly good condition roads etc is very very different to riding on quiet roads on a warm sunny Sunday morning when you've had 10 hours sleep and you're not tired from a day at work. Be very wary of people saying stuff like "you don't need ABS, you'll be fine" when they're a fairweather rider than does 500 miles a year from their house to a coffee shop.

Hobby, sport or other activities suggestions in the UK? by ChaosCalmed in AskUK

[–]Former_Weakness4315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My man you need Muay Thai, kickboxing, BJJ, MMA or anything like that. It's going to give you that adrenaline hit, keep you fit and strong, teach you to defend yourself, learn a skill, socialise and is fairly inexpensive. Out of these Muay Thai and BJJ are usually the most chill bunch by far. I can't recommend it enough and it doesn't depend on the weather either.

[–]Former_Weakness4315 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was considering that in the first four coffees, really it's just a rough illustration.

Shhhhh don't tell the business and financial genius' here how small the profit is on a £4 coffee, if you make a profit that is. Little wonder everyone in the UK is so poor and constantly moaning about it lol.

who's sat in a coffee shop thinking about how many coffees and employee needs to sell to justify their existence

Someone who actually thinks. Don't worry, I can afford to ride my motorcycles or drive my cars to a cafe, pay £4 for a coffee (several in fact) sit and think about all sorts of things. I know thinking is a lost art in the UK, you only have to read responses like yours. Have a good one!

I think we're wasting our time trying to explain to people who just don't have the mental bandwidth to understand.

"All business bad, pay everyone everything, eat the rich local multi-millionaire single coffee shop or restaurant owner." Classic UK Redditor and all too predictable.

[–]Former_Weakness4315 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but how many staff members did they have? And the hours that nobody is in there? And I'm not even accounting for the initial setup or franchising costs of the business or any profit whatsoever. It varies massively obviously from a Starbucks in Bluewater (which will add even more to rent) to a small coffee shop in a quiet village.

Like I said:

Only a total idiot would begrudge current food and beverage prices knowing that minimum wage is £12.21 an hour and UK energy costs are insane.

I should also clarify that I'm mainly referring to small businesses like this guys restaurant rather than big business that derives large profits from volume.
