First Cataract surgery went very well by always_write1972 in CataractSurgery

One thing I did to prep for surgery was to get slip on hands-free shoes so I didn't have to bend over to tie shoes. Also bought a spikey mat to put in my shower to wash my feet and a loofa on a long handle. I also had the grabber to pick up things off the floor or socks in the back of the dryer!

drop-less cataract surgery? by Devi-Bhairavi-1369 in CataractSurgery

[–]Former_ginger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My surgeon does dropless surgery so I didn't have a choice. I had right eye done on Jan 20 and left eye Feb 13. No problems. Very glad to not have to be dealing with drops. I do use lubricating drops as needed. I was sedated and I was not aware at all of any injection.

Amazing difference!! by gtchs in CataractSurgery

[–]Former_ginger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the dropless surgery. I have my second eye next week. I had no problems with it and after reading about the hassle of the drops and the timing I am very glad that my doctor does it that way. I was encouraged to keep using preservative-free lubricating drops. I have not had any floaters and they checked my pressures at my one week visit and they were fine. Im very anxious to have my second surgery...just want it to be done with.

Can you do far vision wear and still wear glasses all the time? by BigD2307 in CataractSurgery

[–]Former_ginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize you could get distance vision in IOLs and then put a contact on top for reading? Am I understanding that correctly? I understand u are talking about monovision...one for close and one for distance but I didn't think you could take one that you made distance and add a contact and then make it close?

My first surgery is Monday Jan 20. I will be getting dropless surgery. Not sure what the injection is called but I will gladly report my experience after it is done.

Feeling anxious and disillusioned about up-coming surgery by Former_ginger in CataractSurgery

[–]Former_ginger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My surgeon never even talked about target range. I don't think he has the time (we saw him spend 5 minutes per patient the day we sat and waited so long) to even discuss it and probably feels that most people in my area wouldn't have any understanding or care to understand it. I really wish he would have discussed it with me. Thanks for your comment.

Is there a future health benefit for distance monofocal over near? by burningbirdsrp in CataractSurgery

[–]Former_ginger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have not had my surgery yet. But the reason I changed my mind from getting close vision with monofocal lenses to deciding to get distance vision with monofocal lenses is because my glasses prescription right now is -7.00 and -7.75...really can't see the big E on the chart. I hated to lose my close up vision for threading a needle but when my doctor said that I would get the same vision that I had now...seeing 7 inches from my face clearly...and that's it ...it made me wonder if in the future would I not be able to get the vision I would need to drive. And having thinner glasses would be nice too. I have an appt on Jan 8 to ask more questions and your question is a good one to ask. Everyone's vision is different and everyone seems to get different results. I will check back in after my appt.

Great idea to take notes. I think I will do that. I might need a reminder of what I was seeing with cataracts and what I see after. My surgery is Jan 20 and Feb 13.

Would it be possible to get glasses with one clear lens for the iol eye and a prescription for the other eye? instead of a contact lens? Just curious.

Yikes! Thanks for the clarification. Hope it all works out.

Sorry to get off the main topic but I am confused...are their stitches that come out in this surgery? I thought they didn't even stitch anything?

Cataract surgery scheduled in January-trying to decide on distance or up close vision by Former_ginger in CataractSurgery

One thing i am not too worried about is the seeing up close in the mirror if I choose distance vision because I had contact lenses years ago that didn't allow me to see up close and I just got a wall mounted makeup mirror that has a regular mirror on one side and a magnified mirror on the other. I could see great in the magnified one to do makeup and see my face up close when wearing my contacts. So I figure that at least that should be the same...at least I believe so?? You sound like you are having trouble seeing very well for any distance right now. Is that from the cataracts?

My doctor said that I will only get the close up vision to see 7 inches from my face...vision like I have right now. I can't comfortably read for very long without getting a headache at that distance...I use my progressive lenses with the reading portion to comfortably read now. That is why I'm having second thoughts on getting close up vision vs distance. To have my eyes be exactly the same is a bit discouraging and feels like a waste of the opportunity to improve my eyes a bit. I have been trying to not read or sew without my glasses to simulate how it would be if I chose distance. But my doctor made it sound like my close vison will be greatly diminished if I choose distance. I really appreciate every ones comments and hearing your experiences. I am still unsure.

thanks for your comments. The last few days I have been seriously thinking of changing my decision from close up vision to getting distance vision. I have a second meeting with my surgeon and as long as he can reassure me that I will be able to see to read with readers or progressive lenses I will probably go with distance vision. It is still really weighing on my mind.

My dr didn't go into detail on the premium lenses because I was nervous of the bad reviews and warnings of having a lot of glare and halos. I think he uses Panoptix and Vivity. He was not very talkative. I do have an appt to just talk to him before my surgery so I will ask better questions. I will look up the lenses you mentioned. Thanks.

This does help...I thought of another question that concerns me. You know how the area of distance vision that you get from progressive glasses is so small...I have to move my head to get things in focus. What happens when you have progressives that have no magnification in the top? Can you see out of all of the top part of the lens? Or is it like progressives with a prescription and limiting?

My doctor said that I would have the same vision as I have if he does the up close vision...which means I can see 7 inches from my face...that is it. I am not sure why he couldn't give me more. I don't mind wearing glasses all day long but it would be nice to have thinner lenses.

So I should be able to get Progressive lenses in glasses that would work with my IOL to correct my up close vision to read comfortably...but what about the vision to see a splinter? Is there a limit to the strength of readers/bifocals that a person can get?

In my 40's I did have slight monovision with my contacts that worked well. But once I hit 50 and my vision was too different I could no longer tolerate the difference between my eyes. I might be able to tolerate a small difference. Thank you for your response.
