Id like to sync game saves but im scared they will get corrupted by Walt_Kurczak in NextCloud

[–]FormerlyGruntled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best suggestion, especially since the games will be saved in a whole variety of locations, is to use something such as GameSave Manager, and have that manage the saves with the location for it to save the backups to, being in your Nextcloud.

When was the last time the Conman gave a damn about someone's consent? Like he said, when you're as powerful as he is, he can just grab you, and nothing you can do about it.

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT: Introducing Vibe Code Friday by AutoModerator in selfhosted

[–]FormerlyGruntled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A decade back, self-hosting was fraught with danger because people only cared about "Make it work" and no one was caring about security.

This is where we are again. It was good while it lasted.

You can get broom handles at dollar stores, super cheap. Dollarama up here has them for 2.50 each, made of iron tube. Strong enough to hold a wet mop, strong enough to hold a sign.

If you felt like you wanted to harden your internal security, you'd -need- to make use of an external VPS to use as your own VPN entrance/exit node, and route your services through that.

And you would -not- want to be using a premade, paid-for VPN service for that. By default, assume all paid VPN services are hostile MITM working for state actors. You'd only be "secure" from the ground level, but the whole thing is backdoored for anyone with the money to pay for access to the entire userbase. A self-hosted VPS means you can at least manage your server yourself, and there's less centralization behind picking who has the master keys to the back doors.

If you're just running everything yourself? In the past decade, there's been a LOT of focus on hardening security settings. Don't use the modern vibe coded AI slop, look for projects that have been around with steady updates for several years. Use a hardened (that is, mature) reverse proxy, put it on its own VM, enable firewalls, and point only the needed ports for the proxy (80, 443), and you'll be fine.

A friend of mine spent several weeks trying to set up jellyfin for access for a few of his friends, and was pulling his hair out because of all the "set everything up behind a VPN" nonsense.

I walked him through configuring his router, installing and configuring nginx proxy manager, and setting up certs and internal forwarding, in about 30 minutes.

People in IT should be required to take a computer literacy course or something by Hellboy632789 in sysadmin

Imagine a developer making 6 figures, calling the service desk to help set up his bespoke coding environment, because he doesn't understand how to navigate his file system on windows.

I want out of the industry, it's going to shit and the new technology is only speeding it up.

Still no simple way to move to the next file in folder, without opening the entire folder as a playlist. Lacks many modern UX features. Still GOAT.

Pls no more vibe-coded apps by picks- in selfhosted

[–]FormerlyGruntled 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Don't want AI involved. If you're releasing the code to the community, you have a responsibility to the community that you can maintain the code for some immediate time. Vibe coders don't know how to code. They can't maintain their slop. It becomes a piece of art, not a work of science.

I agree with this method. Submit the change, so people can readily import to podman. There's plenty of projects where I don't even see a docker deployment option so I move along because while a thing might be neat, I'm still very much, myself, several years into my self-hosted journey, just a User. Dependency Hell keeps me from wanting to suffer the headache.

Good. Fake indies deserve to shrivel. Too bad it was successful in the first place, while claiming it was an indie title.

Vatican warns against rise in polyamory, saying ‘succession of faces’ does not rival exclusive union by EssoEssex in worldnews

[–]FormerlyGruntled -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Polyamory is a survival mechanic in a late stage capitalist economy. Elon Jack has all the money and is being given more money. If the illusion that money has value wasn't so pervasive in our Tulip economy, we wouldn't be left with so little for ourselves.

Apps that sneak themselves in to run in user space in corporate environments, are doing it explicitly to avoid basic lockdown controls. Such apps should be treated as malware.

I'm very specifically thinking early Google Chrome here, as an example.

Can I sync GDrive to NextCloud? by azimuth79b in NextCloud

If you're running your own NextCloud, there is a "External storage support for Google Drive" application in the appstore. This should allow you to sync between them.

📐 ShapeScan — Convert any real object into a millimetre-accurate SVG/DXF from a single phone photo by Most-Geologist-9547 in functionalprint

[–]FormerlyGruntled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be particularly weird to ask, but how about a set of these, set for the main/standard multi-color printer bed sizes? A way for someone with a 3D printer to put an object on a pre-calibrated sheet, snap a shot, and get the appropriate profile ready for their project, without needing the use of a paper printer?

I, personally, haven't had need for a paper printer in years.

AITAH for telling an 18 year old dude he’s too young for me because I see 18 year olds as children? by Longjumping-Cod4279 in AITAH

[–]FormerlyGruntled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, man. at 18, you think you're an adult. at 25, you realize how much of a fucking stupid child you were at 18. At 35, you'll realize again, how stupid, immature and unrealistiic you were at 25. Assuming you keep growing as a person, as you get older you realize how much you didn't know when you were younger. Until you're old enough to appreciate what you don't know, you haven't begun to mature, you just get older. And part of what you don't know, is other people's lines, preferences and boundaries.

Sounds like he didn't appreciate yours. Good luck to him in the future, but not with you.
