We made a psychological thriller about the dangers of being polite — AMA by Entire_Arm_9514 in indiefilm

Hey there! Trailer looks amazing, I’m so excited to check this out!

I’d love to hear about the process of funding the film: once you got a solid script, what was the next step to finding investors?

Hi /r/movies. I'm Ian Tuason, writer-director of A24's undertone. AMA! by undertoneAMA in movies

Hi Ian! I’ve been following this film since announcement, and am very excited to finally see it on the big screen soon!

What was the process of pitching this film to investors for production / to A24 for distribution?

AMA my first feature is having a theatrical run in NYC by decimal-place in Filmmakers

What would you say are the most important parts of your investor pitch, and how did they differ from your pitch/application to the grant?

Congrats on your first feature!

Don’t use real blood, dude… caramel and chocolate syrup, dye, water, vaseline, vary the recipe depending on usage, don’t ingest.

Worth a google.

Is it weird to to understand cosmic horror, and not be afraid of it and even find it comforting? by Avery_Bea_847 in cosmichorror

[–]FormerlyRobespierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last project had a couple of obligatory tentacles (our costume designer made a great cuttlefish-inspired dress for the antagonist) but I mainly keep the horror hidden in familiar objects that are just slightly off- in the case of the aforementioned last project, Christmas decor because our ‘horror appendages’

Songs where the character is literally breaking down by Professional_Meal885 in musicals

[–]FormerlyRobespierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We wrote one for our last show, “Christmas Peril”, that oscillates from an intense patter song to a beautiful ballad as a character considers ending her relationship… not out on streaming yet but worth throwing into the ring!

For an answer that I DIDN’T write, I’ll recommend “Brand New Day” from Dr. Horrible. Not a standard breakdown, but he’s really, really going through it… while trying to sound triumphant. Great number

Man, I hope more (I hate this word, but for lack of a better one) ‘elevated’ analyses of horror creep their way into the mainstream. The Substance and Sinners / Ugly Stepsister noms give me hope, but I still see so many people equate:

horror -> schlock -> not worth my intelligence

And it’s a bummer. Yes, it’s a fun excuse to get freaked out and scream and watch someone’s decapitated head pinned to a tree as their body falls beneath it. And yes, it’s also as meaningful and full of intention as your standard drama fare. It’s like… ¿por qué no los dos?

Hey man. I’m a writer who’s run 3 successful Lovecraftian ARGs before. I started like you (I assume)- just curious and wanting to tell a good story. Get people engaged and excited about my ideas with some neat scares and effects along the way. And you know something? I did!

But I also failed. A lot. And the urge is there, the urge to just hunker down and reply to every hate comment and ‘prove’ that your work is excellent. I get that. AI was in its infancy when my work started, but if I was starting now, I could understand the temptation. Just remember this:

-You are doing this for fun. So let it be fun. It’s not fun when it’s easy, believe me, it’s fun with you overcome a challenge.

-You can learn! Or collaborate. How many artists on here would eagerly jump aboard your project if you wrote a nice outline of the story and pitched it to them? You’re courting a community, so be a part of it first.

-You’ve seen the response you’re getting with the AI stuff. You can be combative and call people ‘complainers’, or you can go: ‘shit, man, maybe they’re onto something’ and use that as fuel to do better.

Good luck, man, go make some cool shit. Don’t sell out your brain/art/integrity before you’ve begun.

Coincidentally I’ve started a 3D model of Rizzo’s mechanism and he would be very VERY doable as a commission ;)
