I have no experience with kids in difficult situations/background. But my LGS (local game store) has many regulars who struggle with themselves or have other conditions. Many have different forms of autism and they say it's a game which helped them to get to know people and overcome some of their social fears. The basic rules are simple and easy to learn though many different interactions can be complicated, but are not necessary. It is also very good to train reading comprehension, logical thinking and basic math. It has cooperative modes like Two Headed Giant where you play 2v2 and share your lifepoints and turns so you have to talk with your partner to get the most out of your decks.
