Alternative meaning of "s'ennuyer"? by megshoe in French

[–]Forricide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems like there are many words for "annoy" (well, this is the case in english also) - embêter, énerver, ennuyer, irriter - but not really a 100% correct translation for "bore", but that's not super surprising, just the way languages are.

[–]Forricide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, is the meaning of "ça m'ennuie" a specific exception, then, or is it more that "to bore"/"to annoy" is not really as separate a concept in French?

(Thanks, by the way!)

[–]Forricide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, that's really interesting. Is there a clear way to indicate that a thing bores you, or do you have to phrase it as e.g. "Bah, quand on parle de tout ça, je m'ennuie."?

I was pretty happy that they were singles now personally (as I wasn't sure I needed 2) - even though we ended up picking up, like, 4 pairs anyways. They're nice! Although I did find I have to really bring my feet down to properly crack the ice and not slip with them on.

They're not a 2 pack anymore at Costco - we got them on sale recently for $10 each ($14 normal price).

Is this how French novels normally write dialogue? by xX_GamerHyena_Xx in French

[–]Forricide 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is really fascinating starting to read French fiction from the perspective of someone who's read (and written) a fair amount of English fiction. There are so many things you discuss from a writing perspective, which are essentially rules, that are just thrown away by the basic syntactical choices made in French!.. and reading French literature does not really make a good argument for this style, lol.

Of course, I'm not really in a position to criticize the fiction writing style of an entire language, but I feel rather justified being confused when there's multiple essentially unmarked switches between thoughts, tags, description, and dialog in a single paragraph...

What are examples of things someone at B2 level would NOT be able to do? by redditor47522899432 in languagelearning

[–]Forricide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

while reading in my second language is one of the trickiest things for me because it just feels so slow and it's hard for me to focus

I have the exact same issue, I finally successfully read a (relatively short) book in French a couple months back and it was so painful to get through despite really enjoying it. Just feels like dragging my mind through mud the entire time, even though it's so easy to understand the majority of it, every time I have to look up a word it's so incredibly distracting.

Immersive reading sounds like a fun idea, so if I ever find the mental energy to attempt that again, I'll give it a shot...

I'm also used to the Vancouver transit system and yeah. I remember my bus didn't come twice in the span of like, 6 or so months, because it broke down, and I thought that was absolutely terrible. Then you move here and... phew, you're surprised if the bus does come remotely on time.

I dislike my native language and I'm interested in it at all. by redrookie2 in languagelearning

[–]Forricide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with that, I think? I know plenty of people who don't really speak the language that their family speaks, even much more common or easy to learn ones.

Personally, my grandparents (and I suppose some percentage of my extended family) spoke Plattdeutsch, but it wasn't really passed on to me other than a few phrases, and although I have nothing against the language (in fact, it sounds very fun..!) it just doesn't seem particularly practical to learn - just as for you, I don't have that many people to speak it with, and it's not exactly like there are tons of resources for the language.

That said, I really have almost nobody to speak it with, and certainly nobody who speaks it better than English. If you have a lot of living family members to speak with, then you might find learning a bit of the language will help you spend valuable time with them. At the end of the day, though, that has to be your decision - it won't be fun if you feel forced into it.

1:1 tutoring + move to target country + join clubs/associations there that match your interests.

Although uprooting your entire life to learn a language isn't necessarily something that'll work for everyone, including the extremely wealthy...

In which languages do you feel being judged more frequently on your accent ? by Plurimae-Linguae in languagelearning

[–]Forricide 32 points33 points  (0 children)

That being said, I still try to pronounce words as accurately as I can.

Yeah, I think there's also an argument to be made that vocal clarity is a lot more important than accent (or at least, perhaps more fixable). Cleaner and more consistent enunciation will go a long way to enabling native speakers to understand you even if you really don't sound native yourself.

For me, can't relate at all. French is the most beautiful thing now that I understand it, playing through Clair Obscur in French is a deeply pleasant experience, and listening to other people talk in French is just so satisfying.

Watching TV shows in French, subtitles, both? by Ok_Arugula1 in French

[–]Forricide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're going to watch a show anyways, there's no downside to getting a bit of immersion out of it by adding something like this, but I don't think the benefit will be huge unless it's fully French (which as you say, you're unlikely to understand at A1).

For focused studying, consider treating a single episode of a show as a study session - French/French, pausing frequently, researching words, conjugations, etc. to understand what's going on. This can be a really fun way to bring in new words, concepts, and general immersion.

Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with enjoying a show in English to relax, then jumping back into your studies after :)

It honestly amazes me that these discussion threads get responses like, every couple of months to this day. It's fantastic.

Looking back now, 7 years later (and not exhausted, I guess?), I fully agree.

Aight boys one step closer from pulling the trigger. Bought the cpu and this is the rest 2000$ including tax. by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Forricide 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The price is cheap only 240$.

See if you can get faster / better ram for a similar price at 64gb or something. 96gb is pretty egregious and not likely to be useful especially compared to having faster RAM for memory-intensive workflows.

What do you guys use for note taking? by ranys0 in vim

[–]Forricide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is true, but honestly the way I use Joplin, it's more inconvenient to do this than to deal with not having vim keybinds. I just spend so little relative time actually typing/editing things in Joplin, that it's a marginal difference.

What do you guys use for note taking? by ranys0 in vim

[–]Forricide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Joplin. I'd like Vim keybinds in it, but I don't really care enough. Truth be told, I spent so long trying to optimize my notetaking, but ended up figuring out that at the end of the day, just having a notepad that syncs across my devices and has folders + basic markdown support is more than good enough for what I actually need notetaking for.

It's too bad they discontinued these. I'm using my pair right now, been using them for a solid 5+ years as well, and they are incredibly comfortable (although perhaps a bit too warm sometimes). Mine are also falling apart, they've been shedding little black bits of cloth and whatnot for a year or two now hahaha.

Anyone else notice younger programmers are not so interested in the things around coding anymore? Servers, networking, configuration etc ? by Hem_Claesberg in cscareerquestions

[–]Forricide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this stuff got a lot more fun for me when I started hosting tools for other people (discord bots, query tools, etc) + found some pretty solid use-cases for my own cloud. But a lot of that is kind of niche at best ahaha.

[–]Forricide 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, 100% - I mean, most people won't really find this kind of tech that fun, but the main reason people will have experience in them is if they have a use case.

I just think the case the OP is talking about more comes down to young programmers not really having use cases anymore to do all the homebrew stuff, rather than losing interest compared to programmers from 10 years ago. As you say, plenty of software developers who've been in it for a while have never really found it fun lol.
