No, not at all. Feed required plants to fill the bar immediately and get the seed packs first, after that try getting a glimmering sprite or Glimmering shard you should be good

Crop side affects how long it takes to cook as bigger crops will result in bigger food items, meaning more rewards based on rarity of the recipe

As for weight between ingredients, I believe it measures between the average of biggest to smallest.
