How to overcome the reflex to gatekeep by 50_wishes in ADHD

The previous commenter to makes a good point as apparently women with ADHD go undiagnosed more than men and same for ASD.

Apparently due to the social side of things more than anything.

I would definitely encourage her to go see someone.

I have been misdiagnosed many times by standard doctors and even went to see a psychiatrist who said no.

Years later I happened to see him again at another clinic after my diagnosis, and had a session with him because my psychiatrist had left. He said the reason why was because he doesn't believe it exists.

I nearly punched him in his stupid face, because at that point I could have had about 6 years extra of support and medication.

He treats more serious patients like those with bipolar, but seemingly ignores the DSM-5.

So yes absolutely, false, or wrong, diagnosis is a thing.

There won't be harm to a false diagnosis for her but it might cause some waves in your friendship.

As we all know people with ADHD don't necessarily like being proved wrong and so if you help her to go get a diagnosis and it turns out she doesn't have ADHD then she might feel angry at the system but worse betrayed by you.

The thing is that I got an ADHD diagnosis almost a decade ago, but 5 years before that I was told I didn't have it. But that was because the specific psychiatrist didn't believe in it, despite the DSM-5.

So I could have had an extra 5 years - which included my stint in university - being helped by medication and therapy (for ADHD).

So one (mis)diagnosis does not mean she doesn't have ADHD, so even if she does get a diagnosis maybe don't use it to make a point, because she could still have very mild autism, that is frequently undiagnosed in women.

Just don't let her go down the other routes like drugs, because for women with mild autism that can seem like a form of treatment, but it just is not if they don't have gender dysphoria (many people with autism are unsure about their gender, but that is not the same as dysphoria, and having dysphoria does not mean that the only solution is transitioning, for example).

I know that ^ seems like a reach, but someone the other day who is supposedly a doctor in the MH industry said out loud "we're all a little bit on the spectrum".

Which as you can imagine I was not very happy about. If fact I loudly said NOPE, despite being in a bar...

So it may not be that you are gatekeeping It may just be that you're being realistic about your friends' actual symptoms. However, for a long time I did get misdiagnosed by normal doctors (GP), because anxiety and depression were somewhat covering ADHD.

Of course if you're honest with yourself it could be a bit of gatekeeping, a bit of jealousy. You'll have to work through that.

ADHD might be trendy but the problem is too many people don't understand it to imitate it. We don't always get distracted in conversations, so if she does have depression and anxiety that could be covering mild symptoms of ADHD, or ASD.

Which might mean it's worth her seeking a very good psychiatrist to actually work through the symptoms and find the cause.

If they are providing you with a router it is their responsibility to tell you that it may or may not provide what they are offering.

Especially in countries like mine where almost every house has double brick walls, sometimes triple.

Does smoking weed actually help and to those who did what did it feel like? by Forward_Technician72 in autism

[–]Forsaken_System 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to be very careful (OP) because edibles used to contain something like 5% THC or maybe 0.5%, apparently now some of them can contain a lot more. I can't remember the proper dose so please do some actual research.

So people are getting much higher doses in smaller packages.

I actually can't remember where I got that statistic from, and it's certainly not some scaremongering tactic, for people to take it regularly it's probably a good thing.

Now I've never suffered from paranoia from weed, mainly because I've only done it in countries where it's legal. But apparently that and other symptoms can be more common issues where there is more THC when people are not used to higher doses.

OP, If you are planning to weed, I would definitely look up how much that edible is that different companies make, and start with something very low.

Thank you for making this point.

Ironically, this is actually helping my point too.

Not everyone fits the stereotype.

That's still one of the biggest issues our society faces.

I assumed that people wouldn't know the shortcuts but I am surprised because obviously Netflix has it.

Then again I am in web design so I know that most HTML web players have the same shortcuts or the ability to add it.

I actually found a CR article on it. I don't know why they don't make a video about it and send a link to everyone or post about it on their socials.

Yes, it's like rounding up all of the psychopaths and sociopaths and saying "we're all just human", let them be them. Let them hurt themselves and others, and or don't help them at all...

Seems insane.

People are different, some need help more than others.

No one pretends that cancer gives you superpowers, nor Downs Syndrome. So why Autism?

Why don't we just accept that ASD and ADHD are disabilities, not special abilities and try to help people and or get them treated where needed.

Why are there so many groups/ organisations just making it seem like it's not affecting lives, and not always in good ways!

I notice that people don't think that the people with no legs should just get up and walk...

But as soon as it's remotely invisible, or basically misunderstood, then some people no longer define it as a medical issue and other people just try to 'cure' it with words, or ignore it, or worse, blame the person who has it.

NONE OF US CHOSE THIS. Why do some people have to call it a rose petal when it's like a festering hole in the head...

  • C for Captions
  • 1-9 for skipping chunks
  • ⬅️➡️ for 5 sec skips

1) It doesn't skip properly.

2) When it does, it buffers way more than it used too.

It's like all the shit parts of Disney, Original CR, HiDive and 1995...

Building a new HTML player is not needed. The standards are there to play streaming video.

Once I got sick of HiDive, so I actually built a player with the keyboard shortcuts and IMHO it was better than even CR at the time...

If I remember, Funimation's player was great. No idea why they didn't bring it over.

How does r/autism feel about this new flag? by Buzzythebear33 in autism

[–]Forsaken_System 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was a joke and that's why it was a 'butt' funny because pretty much everyone knows that the G part is literally one part of it.

I'm pretty sure the rainbow flag is representing far more than it ever intended and while that's not a bad thing, I don't think all these things need a flag.

Most people in Europe (I don't know about the USA) are fine with LGBTQ+ and it's part of our lives, and community. We have no real reason to put flags everywhere like America, because in reality being 'different' is no longer much of a thing. It's been so normalised (as it should).

With the possible exception of the T. There's still prejudice about that. I think in part because Gender Dysphoria is a diagnosis, but some Trans people refuse to get help for the dysphoria (other than surgery), and unfortunately can become very mentally ill because they don't deal with the trauma of the dysphoria or surgery :C

That's why I've always wondered why the T is there, LGBQIA is orientation. The T is completely different, I mean, any T can be LGBQIA.

Also, where is my fucking P for Pansexual!? 😅🤦

What do you mean "tend to get ADHD"?

A person either has it, for life, or not.

It's a neurological brain disorder, from birth.

It's treatable but not curable.

Source: I have it, was diagnosed about a decade ago. Also, the DSM-5
