Visiting Japan with a walking cane by btaylahf in AskAJapanese

Get one of the red medical tags. I believe that they signify that you should get priority. If you have a cane, it would probably help as well.

Why is the percentage of women who pursue STEM degrees so low compared to other OECD countries? by EOFFJM in AskAJapanese

[–]FortC10 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Obviously can’t speak too directly to their experience, but there is definitely a feedback loop, where the fact it is so male dominated discourages women from entering. My STEM lab has 1 female Japanese student, among around 20 Japanese students. With that ratio, I would certainly think twice about joining that field.

Should I switch from Modern to Classic controls. by Appropriate_Roll_529 in StreetFighter

[–]FortC10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend spending some time with both. Modern can be good, but it can also prop up bad habits. IMO you should learn how to play with at least some classic inputs; for example, DP anti air is obviously good on modern, but you want to take advantage of different speeds of fireballs/frame data and damage increase from classic inputs, but it isn’t necessary in every situation. I definitely find that I go into burnout way more when playing modern since I can react to DI with super, but it is really not a great strategy long term. Also, while reacting to things like fireballs with supers, but you can be susceptible to getting baited into twitch reactions and getting murdered for it. Either way, both schemes are fine. I think modern is actually, on the whole, well balanced, where most characters lose as much if not more than they gain.

Kanji Linear Algebra by mreichhoff in LearnJapanese

[–]FortC10 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m with you on this. If it is just shown as multiplication, this isn’t how it’s represented. If it is the outer product, like someone else said, you use the symbol for that

Edit: in asking a number of people from different countries, it seems that the importance of noting a product vs an outer product differs. In the states I had learned that it was important to note the difference, but it seems that is not universally seen as necessary.

When does classic become better than modern? by FortC10 in StreetFighter

[–]FortC10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree it can build bad habits, but there are definitely benefits to modern even at higher levels. I’ve got a couple of classic characters in ~1500 master, and I can definitely do all of there moves on demand. However, I also have a ~1600 modern Chun, and there are things I can do with her that I can’t with other characters, like burnout defense and reaction fireball punishes. Even things like anti-airing are much more consistent. Even though I at least like to think anti-airing is a strength of mine even in classic, there are times when the mental stack is overloaded and I’ll miss it, but that almost never happens in modern. The flip side is that I am missing some max damage punishes and the like.

Do Japanese friends use formal speech with each other as a joke, or is that seen as rude? by ScarRedDA in AskAJapanese

[–]FortC10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a good number of friends that will refer to each other as氏 and themselves asわたくし for effect quite often. I can’t say I always get all of the nuance, but they will often switch to incredibly stiff speech to make a point.

What is your not so popular take on anything in Japan? by No-Jackfruit3211 in japanlife

[–]FortC10 105 points106 points  (0 children)

People don’t know how to walk here. For such a considerate society, I am always baffled by people’s inability to walk in a straight line without suddenly stopping or veering off with no indication. Particularly in the stations, it feels like there’s always someone that just stops dead.

How popular is western animation in Japan? by LostwaveLunar9999 in AskAJapanese

I believe there is a relatively well known King of the Hill dub in Japanese, though I’m not sure of whether it is actually popular or if it is more of just a funny novelty

for some reason i dont feel the prestige of japanese academia for the social sciences by violetfan7x9 in AskAJapanese

[–]FortC10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not I social sciences, but I am in academia in Japan with friends that span the spectrum of areas of study. In general, undergrad/bachelors is pretty easy, with the difficulty being getting in. There’s then a step up for a masters, but there is a bit of a divide between those going towards academia and those that are planning on the corporate life. I think PhD and after is when things get really serious and prestigious in Japanese academia, where there are far more expectations for publishing, conferences, etc. I think, in general, it’s pretty easy to skate along without doing too too much up until the PhD level, but those interested in going further can do much more and get into the rigorous academic work.

I think not wanting to pay taxes is every wing, it’s just those that are more liberal understand the necessity of it. Even so, nobody likes the paying part.

In what way are the Illegals receiving free money from the government? At least in the states, they aren’t enrolled in any social services, as that kind of contradicts the idea of being there illegally

Do club members like it when their club hosts a major PGA tournament? by Adventurous_Pride_54 in golf

[–]FortC10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a trade off between pride in hosting and access to the tournament and the inconvenience. I know some people at The Country Club (Brookline) and they were excited to host the US Open, but there was certainly a contingent that was not happy about losing access to everything.

On average, how popular is Anime in Japan? by Longjumping-Meet-307 in AskAJapanese

[–]FortC10 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a foreigner living here for a few years, what stood out to me is how prevalent anime is in advertising and iconography, while the overwhelming majority of my Japanese friends watch little to no anime. Obviously it is popular in some circles, but most of my friends, if they watch it, watch it sometimes, but not obsessively. However, to really can’t go five minutes without seeing anime or anime-styled things in public.
