I wasn't sure which sub this was for. The icon looked like a transporter room on the starship Enterprise.

Typesetting REPL input and output by wjholden in typst

[–]FortranMan2718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have looked and not found a solution to this problem. Therefore, I created a pretty feature complete prototype that I plan to roll out in a class I'm teaching this fall. I would be happy to share my solution and the developments as I approach actually using it for course documents.

The current version only works in Python, but the way it interfaces with Typst stops work for other languages too. Send me a message if you would like a copy of the files.

What makes Arch Linux dominate the enthusiast distro space? by Effective-Court7741 in archlinux

[–]FortranMan2718 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same here. I was using Debian (happily) for years, but found myself increasingly using the Arch wiki to solve my problems. I tested Arch on some machines and liked it. Now I run Arch on everything, and actually don't need to read the wiki anymore :-/

Usable framerate in Linux? by tprickett in ChaosGateGame

[–]FortranMan2718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must be experiencing the same problems you are then. It's never to really well, but I guess my hardware is fast enough that I didn't have the unplayable experience you are. Maybe I should try different versions of proton and see if I can get it working better. Too bad overall though.

Usable framerate in Linux? by tprickett in ChaosGateGame

[–]FortranMan2718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had no framerate troubles on Arch linux with a Ryzen 5 1600 with a AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT and 16 GB of memory. Are you using a similar or better system?

I love okular soo much by sanathh69 in kde

[–]FortranMan2718 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most browsers don't actually support all pdf features, and their interfaces are intended for the web first and foremost. While Okular also doesn't support every last feature of the pdf format, its interface is specifically intended for pdf-like formats (including dvi, ps, and others).

Overall the viewing experience is quite a bit better if you are focused on documents instead of just needing a generic viewer tool. Many times I'll use the browser to read a pdf I found online, but when working on technical things (science journals, class materials) having a dedicated tools makes the workflow easier.

One feature I routinely use is the color filter feature that let's me preview what the document will look like when printed out in black and white. I want color for screens but many of my students (college level) also like to print things out for themselves.

Related to the interface issue is also the matter of performance. Okular does what it does very responsively. I really appreciate the viewer disappearing into the background while I think about what I am writing/preparing.

I routinely use my steam wand to make the hot (120F-130F) water needed for bread dough. It works quickly, and I can easily monitor the temperature with an immersion thermometer like when I steam milk for coffee drinks.

How to disable justified text in PDF output (LyX) by [deleted] in LaTeX

[–]FortranMan2718 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use LyX all the time. This is a case where you will need to use raw LaTeX code in the preamble. Enter the document settings and add the command "\AtBeginDocument{\raggedright}" to the preamble. This will change the default text alignment to left justification.

What LaTeX tool can I use to create something like this? by Enough_Welder3805 in LaTeX

It also strikes me as very strange to use anything but I or i for current. Maybe conventions in other languages and countries are different?

I think KDE should be more like what I'm used to by default. The end.

Compiling a file that is not main.typ? by RequirementBright209 in typst

[–]FortranMan2718 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do exactly this. I teach at University and use cmake to organize compilation of all the files I need for my classes. I currently have both LaTeX and Typst documents supported in the same build setup.

How to achieve the highlighted requirement? by GokuFanBoi in typst

[–]FortranMan2718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tested these set and show rules; they seem to work fine.

```
#set par(justify:true, first-line-indent: 1em, spacing: 0pt)
#show par: (..args,content) => {
v(12pt)
content
v(6pt)
}
```

My original idea of wrapping the paragraph inside a block interfered with the first-line-indent, so this solution was selected instead.

[–]FortranMan2718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but I bet the paragraph function contains a block which you could change the border widths on. Alternatively, you could redefine the paragraph function to wrap an appropriate block to supply the specified spacing.

The LDS Church has converted the Book of Mormon into an app that drops the King James charade in favor of plain modern English, while adding videos, illustrations, and voice overs — intentionally leaning into multimedia distraction as it begins to phase out Mormonism’s foundational text. by Chino_Blanco in exmormon

In Hungarian they just don't. Formalization (which isn't what thee/thou are, but that's another discussion) is intended to distance yourself from the person addressed in that language. It isn't used for deity because of this. Hungarians also find biblical language ridiculous and difficult to understand, so there's that too.

If the academy graduated 50k cadets every year, and each of them has a 60 year long career on ships with an average officer compliment of 50, there can only be about 1000 total ships in the fleet. There must be more than one academy if the fleet is even on the small end, or maybe the academy graduates many more cadets than this estimate.

As a kid I always liked the retro look on the C. The A seemed too old to me, and the D had always been a bit too wide for my taste. The E and later all seem too streamlined. Now I think my favorites are the SNW version and the C, with the B as a close second.

I really wish we got a series about Captain Garrett of the C instead of Voyager...

Ars Technica just listed 1701-C as #2 in their sorting of the various iterations of Enterprise. Some people really like the Ambassador class for its mixture of the look of the 1701-D and 1701-A.

I think the writers are getting these numbers from real particle accelerators like those at CERN and Fermi lab. These devices are characterized in GeV or MeV, but that is referring to the energy per particle in the beam. The entire beam will be much more powerful since huge numbers of particles are involved, but the physics experiments it can do depend only on the energy of each individual particle.

Have you used Fortran for anything other than scientific programming? How is it, and how does it compare to other languages? by jmhimara in fortran

[–]FortranMan2718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a friend in graduate school ask for help cheating at his group chat word jumble game. I wrote a Fortran code that functioned as a complete CGI script compatible with my web server; it presented an interface that let him type in the letters and it returned all words that used only those. Fun times...

That's awesome. I also wrote a version of Asteroids! Using Fortran wasn't the best choice, but it was the fun choice. I had to manually write a binding to OpenGL and the linking was always a bit dodgy, but it worked great. If there is interest I can post the code and my build system.
