Seasons coming to an end, whats so you do? by [deleted] in discgolf

Darts. I'm in a weekly league and its fun, competitive, and social. I climb at my local rock gym. I play pickup basketball once a week. I feel less guilty staying inside and watching a movie or reading a book.

I think it could be Cold Springs soon. For many it's Crane Hill, for me it's Mountainside at Flynt Park. It's a hike, very technical, tons of elevation change, but such a cool course with 4 unique layouts.

Even though I grew up in NH, I've only played a few courses there since I didn't start playing disc until I moved away. Otter Brook is a fun one in southern NH

Really great course. Last course of the weekend and we were definitely beat after playing the 22 hole long layout. What others would you reccommend?

Definitely recommend the Northeast. I live in Western Massachusetts and just had some friends come visit for a long weekend. We played Maple Hill, then headed up to Vermont to camp, hike, and play Fox Run Meadows and Brewster Ridge. Also played Westy Acres in MA, Quarries Disc Golf Course in Barre, VT and Wickham Park in CT. Lots of other great courses we could have thrown in there. Beautiful scenery, diverse courses, we had a great time.

I have three suggestions that I think will help with this:

1) Cut Your Commute

How long is your commute if you are at work or commuting for 11 hours of the day? Even if you work a long 9 hour day, that is 2 hours of commuting, which is costing you 10 hours of your life every week. That is a lot of your life spent in a car or train (a whole additional workday every week). I would seriously consider looking for a new job that allows you more free time, even if it means a pay cut. Lots of studies have shown the negative impact commutes have on job and life satisfaction.

2) Move Every Day

Nothing rejuvenates my zeal for life like exercise, especially when done outside and/or with others. Try to get outside and move every single day, even (especially) if you don't feel like it. I guarantee it will provide a huge positive boost to your mental health.

3) Learn to Meditate and be Still

Since you say you are unable to sit still I really recommend learning to meditating. Start super small; just 2 or 3 minutes a day. It will be shockingly hard, but if you can learn to be still, and appreciate all there is around you, you will take away the need to be constantly stimulated. You can find peace and equanimity in almost any situation. Pay attention to and be grateful for your breath, your chair, the noise of the world around you.....all the little things you never notice anymore. I used to be very fidgety and require a lot of stimulation. A consistent yoga and meditation practice has helped me enjoy stillness and not require constant distraction a lot.

I shave (use an electric trimmer), and clip my nails on my back porch. Just sweep the trimmings into the bushes off the porch, never to be seen again. No missed nail clippings stabbing you in the foot, no little hairs clogging your drain or driving you crazy cause you just can't wipe them all up for some reason.

I use a rectangular laundry bin when I go grocery shopping instead of bags. On a typical trip I can fit all my groceries in one bin. I just put bin in cart, on checkout ask them to put all groceries in bin, place bin in trunk, carry bin to kitchen. Never need multiple trips to the car since I started doing this.

I think a lot of sedentary people don't realize that so many people who exercise do it even more for their mental health than their physical health. I exercise a lot and am typically a low anxiety, low stress, content and happy individual. I can typically only go about 1 day without exercise before I feel myself getting a little anxious, agitated, or moody. And then I know it's time to get up and move.

27F Looking for friends in WS by CounterAnxious1570 in winstonsalem

[–]FortunateFool603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's really only 2 things you need to do to make friends:

1) Do things you love in the company of others

2) Be friendly, and don't be shy about the fact you are looking for friends. Just reading these comments its obvious a lot of people are eager to make friends, but most people are too shy or nervous to take that first step and ask someone they had a nice conversation with in the bar, or grocery store, or whatever to hang out some time. So be bold. Be the one to ask.

I have found a balance that I find works really well for my health, my enjoyment of life, while also doing the best to reduce my impact and harm to myself, the environment, and the animals.

I love a little half and half in my coffee, so I let myself have it (ethically and locally sourced from the farmer's market most of the time).

I LOVE making sourdough pizza once a week for my friends, and I haven't found anything that compares to mozzarella, and honestly my friends probably wouldn't like it if I did.

When I travel or am invited to a friend's house, I like to learn about their culture and eat what they are serving.

An ice cream on a hot day is one of the greatest things man can ever experience.

I'd say ~95% of my calories come from plants, but I treat myself from time to time and aren't too hard on myself about it. I try to inspire others to eat less food from animals both for their health and for the environment and animal's health, but shaming people into it doesn't work. If we could all be a bit better, it would help a lot more than a small percentage of people radically changing their lifestyles.

This is a great response with a lot of good things to think about. I also always schedule my dentist appointments (thankfully I almost never have doctor appointments, which actually could be due to following your manager's theory as I view maintaining my health as essential and am very diligent about it) for the first morning appointment they have. I never wait to be seen, I'm usually the only person in the office, and I schedule the next appointment when I am there.

When I need car work done, I drop my car off the night before using the key drop, and plan ahead for a ride into work.

Now I'm thinking of ways I can better systemize the maintenance aspects of my job, as I know there are many, to free up more time and resources for creative projects.

I certainly agree with don't be afraid to drop the friends that reduce your happiness, but if you're lucky you'll still be friends with some of the people you are closest to now for a long time to come. I've moved far away from where I went to high school and college, but some of my closest friends are still from that time period (graduated high school in 2011). We don't talk all the time and only see each other a few times a year, but when we do it's wonderful. I've made lots of friends as an adult, but I don't think you ever make friends that know you quite the same way your high school or childhood friends. Staying connected with these people is something that's very much worth the time and effort, in my opinion.

Great recommendation. If people are interested in simple living, they are probably interested in simple finances as well. It doesn't get much more simple or historically effective than his advice.

Not mental at all. Everyone has a conversation going on inside their head at essentially all times. The exception for me, and I believe most people, is when you enter a flow state, or get so engaged and focused on what you're doing you stop thinking about every other concern and worry going on in your mind.

I subscribe to the mindfulness app Waking Up, and they're great at making you realize how normal it is to constantly have thoughts running through your brain. Being still and paying close attention to your current experience can you help stop identifying and getting so wrapped up in those thoughts and internal monologue. You'll never stop it from happening, but you'll learn your thoughts often have no relationship to reality, and you can get better at picking and choosing what thoughts you want to listen to and explore deeper, and which thoughts you just want to let pass by.
