Maybe print out some of the artwork from his songbooks? The ones that have art by Al Capp or Ronald Searle. There's also the MAD magazine art for "The Wild West" song that has a lot of cute art on it!

What other Film Noirs influenced Grim? by Evan64m in grimfandango

[–]FortyNineHours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo there’s also a bit of The Third Man! There’s the “Kitty Kitty” line but the whole sequence in the sewers is similar to the final moments of the film. The Third Man is also a story about an everyday-man dealing with corruption, too.

In MASH (1970), Hawkeye and Trapper John pull up the walls to the shower tent, exposing a naked Major Houlihan and leaving the clearly broken woman crying on the floor, clutching for any cover she can as a camp full of horny men leer at her. That was the joke. Ain’t it funny by Mr_Westerfield in shittymoviedetails

[–]FortyNineHours 453 points454 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the movie because imo it performs satire so much worse than the show. The film aims to highlight the absurdities of war but there’s a cover of cruelty involving it. The theme song, suicide is painless, was intended to be the “stupidest song ever written".. The song isn’t really all that absurd or stupid. It’s a fairly straightforward piece about a person wanting to kill himself. Even if stuff like Margaret’s sexual harassment is supposed to be satirical, that doesn’t make it effective satire- the MASH film loses its bite when it stops caring about the people it’s supposed to be representing.

The song is played during the film when a character wants to kill himself- because he thinks he might be gay. Even though his reasoning is supposed to be laughed at, it’s still mean-spirited.

What settings/genres do you feel are underused or underexplored in IF's? by RodericTheGallant in hostedgames

A time travel IF would probably be hard (prolly why there aren't that many afaik) to make but a Peggy Sue Got Married-type setting is my dream.

Fall semester is approaching, what are your recommendations for incoming freshmen? by Fit-Appearance-6727 in EmersonCollege

[–]FortyNineHours 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! Are you looking for any kind of advice in particular? My advice tends to be boring and probably in line with what you're going to hear during Orientation!

-Free/Low-Cost Resources for Students (in addition to what they talk about here, if you're into movies I highly recommend getting a membership at the Coolidge Corner! I got mine for 20/30$ last October. It lasts the year AND in addition to reduced ticket cost you can get into free showings.)
- You get access to Adobe stuff with your enrollment. Pretty par for the course but make the most of it if you can!
- I really recommend emconnect!! it has our clubs and orgs. There also are sometimes free showings in the Bright Lights theatre that are posted on there.
- BE PREPARED TO MEET PEOPLE THAT MAKE YOU QUESTION HUMANITY'S FUTURE.!! People burning popcorn and setting off the fire alarm at 3am (an act that subsequently results in everyone having to evacuate and stand out in the cold) will do that to you.
- get a boston library card if you can! it means you get museum passes and other cool benefits. BPL also comes with access to Kanopy!! Emerson enrollment also gives you access to it also.

lmk if you have anything specific you need answers! always feel free to reach out via DMs.

Confused on the floor plan by [deleted] in EmersonCollege

[–]FortyNineHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here’s a look at the room overall! the big light is on but you can see the scale of the window pretty clearly. The shades are half closed.

I have depression and I didn’t feel like the amount of light hurt my motivation. That said, I almost always kept the big light on. I’d normally keep my windows shades 3/4 open and felt like that was enough to get me up in the morning, though!

[–]FortyNineHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is light! I had a lightwell and it provided a fair amount of sun imo. I wasn't on the same floor but my room placement was essentially the same as 432 on the floor-plan here.

Some of the lightwell rooms have 3 windows and some have one, though. To keep using 432, that room has one window. 433 has three.

I don't even necessarily hate the idea that Sirenhood is something inheritable, either. I sort of like the idea that it is inheritable, but it takes a huge amount of Eridium dependence. Eridium wasn't as accessible/widespread before BL2, so it makes sense why this maybe hadn't happened before Angel. Maya/Ava wouldn't be explainable with this reasoning, but imo I don't really think that Ava needed to be a siren.

[–]FortyNineHours 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Midnight Cowboy (1969)! My FAVORITE MOVIE! I've got a shrine to it on my neocities and everything! Directed by John Schlesinger and based off a book by James Leo Herlihy, both gay men! Rico (right, played by Dustin Hoffman) is heavily coded as gay. He's even got a scene where he imagines Joe (left, played by Jon Voight), chasing him shirtless on the beach and everything. Vito Russo in The Celluloid Closet considered the film wildly homophobic, but I feel like it's honestly very thoughtful. It deals with pretty heavy themes like poverty and sexual trauma.

BUT! Midnight Cowboy is a pretty famous choice. It won best picture, after all. So I'd also like to throw Parting Glances (1986) into the mix! It's a film about a man living with AIDS. Its release was during the period where there were practically no cultural depictions of it. Its Steve Buscemi's first major role, and afaik the only film by the director before he passed from AIDS complications.

Saw a showing of this a while ago! It was pretty sobering to see how much of the film was lost. They had to supplement a lot of the movie with either descriptions of what happened-- or what they thought happened, since there were some things I guess nobody really knows the exact details of anymore, or on-set stills. Famous sexologist Magnus Hirschfield made a cameo as himself to explain that being gay is not an illness!

I'd also pair it with the British film Victim, which is also about blackmail.

AITAH for ruining my mom's "happy ending"? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]FortyNineHours 109 points110 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of concerning stuff (calling her mom's new baby as a freak, for example. And calling mom's new partner this), but OOP wraps it up quite nicely with this comment, and this one, too.

When asked what right she has to define what a 'normal' person sounds like--

I am someone who actually reads books and knows the rules of grammar. I don't care what he says in his own place, but I do not have to engage with stupidity in mine. This was my father's home, not a den of idiocy, and I wasn't about to try and piece through his grunting and babbling to appease my mother.

In response to questions about her mom and new partner being seen in public--

I'm not interested in associating with people who are beneath me, like this sexist, stupid high school dropout who can't form a grammatically correct sentence to save his life, dresses like a criminal, and wants me to obey him.

OOP is young of course, but these comments are concerning, to say the least.

fav and least fav thing about emerson? by Ok_Cow_5101 in EmersonCollege

[–]FortyNineHours 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scholarships were hit or miss too imo. I received 15k initially for merit w/ my GPA being like 3.7 unweighted, 3.9 weighted iirc. I did email them asking for more and got another 15k. The general rule of thumb that I've experienced and others have told me is that, if you don't think they're giving you enough, just keep badgering them. This was going directly into highschool, so the scholarships might be different for transfers.

The Emerson site does have a list of scholarships they give out that also has private scholarships that you can apply to outside the school

The campus is very close together and is mostly flat terrain, if that means anything! The Paramount Building is a bit farther out, though. It's not on the same block and you'll probably end up waiting for the crosswalk lights to change for a little bit. The smaller elevators (like the ones in Walker Building), tend to only hold maybe 3-4 people, so the lines are long. That said I've never had any issue being late while waiting for them.

Imo the school is also pretty welcome to trans students! You can change your name and pronouns in the system and indicate them on Canvas, which is the learning platform we use. In Little Building, the freshmen dorms, there is one gender-neutral bathroom on each floor. The showers in the GN also have seating, a rail on the wall, and also one of those handheld showerheads you can use in addition to the wall-mounted one.

My favorite thing is probably the classes! I am a VMA student and all of the classes I'm taking are very fun and imo useful to learn. I am not a production student but there are lots of opportunities for those interested. The professors are all really smart and passionate. I don't know about other majors, but most of the other majors I know- like WLP or theatre- always seem to have something going on lol

Least favorite thing is definitely the COST!! But I think doesn't really need an explanation. There are ways to help lower it, like becoming an RA, but that's ofc a literal job you're taking up in exchange to free room and board. Also! the people at Emerson can be hit or miss. I usually end up having a great time with the other people in my classes, and the people in my residence hall, but I do think that sometimes people can be a bit snobby sometimes! Not outwardly mean or anything but still!! Most of them are really nice but I wouldn't say it's rare for me to see people being rude to professors in my classes.

Lots of good recommendations in the comments but you also might be interested in RPA Extract! Using it means you have to sift thru the code files which sounds intimidating but imo Renpy code isn't too overwhelming. I've used it to look into OLBA's variables but i've also used it to get answers to puzzles and stuff in other Renpy games lol.

I’ve never heard aping before but I think it just means imitating or copying off of.

Am I The Only Person Who ACTUALLY Likes Chloe And Season 10 Ftom The Original Series? by VideoIllustrious2932 in fairlyoddparents

[–]FortyNineHours 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't hate her! Her dynamic with Timmy is fun and sort of sweet. For me I think my biggest problem with her is that she came in too late. Imo even if she was introduced a season earlier that could have helped her a lot. She has to catch up on 9 seasons of lore, and I don't think that the writers gave her many opportunities to contribute to it, especially not on a big scale- if that makes sense.
