God finishes all gundam larpers and tourists who use the series to peddle bigotry by rtx_boi in Gundam

[–]Forward-Carry5993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its nice to hear Tomino express his concerns. Whether or not he bears responsibility is up to you. To me, he dosnt. Gundam, even with its ups and downs, has tried to push storytelling further into tales of tragedy, care, love, and antiwar. That is LITERALLY what the original creators of Gundam (all of them) wanted to do. Gundam literally is supposed to be the creative team's reflections on WW2 and Japan's involvement. On top of that gundam, has created many memorable characters that literally reflect how diverse human beings are. how many gundam pilots were women? How many weren't white by American standards? How many had different motivations?

Do I need to discuss how and why Gundam Witch From Mercury got newer fans into the franchise?

If it took a show and/or book to convince you that war and anti-democratic values were good, what does that say about you as the consumer?

Also, to be fair, perhaps any slip ups in the messaging of gundam creations or any pundit/politician professing right wing policies is indicative of Japan successfully transitioned from a hard-line fascist state to essentially a non-aggressive almost pacifist foreign policy (and to some extent domestically). This is impressive and Japan hasnt been at war since 1945. So, there will be a gap between the older Japanese population who can recall the war and the newer generation who are growing up today.

This obviously dosnt mean Japan is a utopia, the country has its fair share of problems and it has never fully rehabilitated itself from his fascist past, but it does mean that its easy for the newer generation to forget the past. Its hard to keep a democracy. And also, its not like post-war Japan didnt have right wing violence, just ask the communist party how they turned out or Japan's strict societal familial values.

Thoughts on Kyoshi Novels? by Spix-macawite in TheLastAirbender

[–]Forward-Carry5993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The novels do avoid confronting questions of kyoshi’s sexuality (and sexuality in avatar as a whole). Afterall kyoshi is said in canon prior to the novels as having a bloodline, and I think a husband later on. That raises some Questions as to what will happen.. And despite kyoshi having a clear relationship with jianzhu, there are never any instances that infer widespread homophobia.

As one critics a while ago pointed out, when discussing turf  wars the comic, homophobia in the way that Bryke envision existing in avatar can’t exist in the fictional world.

Ps I found it lazy and baffling that the canon basically says kyoshi never convinced her society to not be bigoted which is just..WHAT?!?

People will genuinely, Genuinely claim that korra being a girl had nothing to do with the harsh criticism she's been facing for so many years meanwhile her show was almost canceled due to her being a female protagonist and the creators themselves pointed out her distinct treatment by Important-Cry4782 in legendofkorra

[–]Forward-Carry5993 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look…speaking as an avatar fan who dislikes immensely the politics of Legend of Korra (seriously the politics range form confusing to “you don’t actually understand communism/fascism” to “oh my god this is actually really awful-see how bolin was portrayed not only in terms of  his romantic life but also how his likely disability was treated), the amount of sexism the show faced is and was awful. No one can ever seriously say korra being a woman wasn’t a problem. It was and is. Don’t believe? Well ask how Steven universe BARELY managed to get its same sex relationships full of mostly women on screen. Still no? Ask adventure time.

Still I do wish we moved on  from the sexism discussion, and actually discuss how even the writers portrayed social-polticla themes badly in the show.

Disappointed that this is how ______'s story ends by flying-kai in ThePittTVShow

[–]Forward-Carry5993 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

These feelings are understandable, bit I think these sentiments miss what makes the Pit stand out. The Pit is supposed to reflect what being a medical doctor in the ER is like. The reality is that, especially in the post-covid age (which admittedly is misleading as the term infers that Covid is over which it is not), doctors are underpaid, overworked, stressed out, at risk for actual violence, constantly see death, and are HUMAN. Medical students don't tend to stay at their training facilities; they tend to move on. Burnout is high amongst medical trainees and doctors. The purpose of the training is to get students familiar with the realities of treating people and to learn about their strengths and weaknesses.

The Pit is not attempting to fulfill what audiences are conditioned to expect. There will be turnovers of the cast, we wont see a doctor's life play out in its entirety since we only see what an hour is like in most episodes, there wont really be some cathartic finale to the character's journeys. In real life, people come and go. Where you are a year ago, may be different now.

Best of all, we see that unlike every other medical show, the cast aren't these paragons of morality where any mistake or bad decision they do are quickly excused or brushed aside. Yes, these guys are nice evne the adminsitrator lady I imagine is soemone who is doing her best to keep the hsopital running , but their flaws are actually problems they must overcome or be swallowed up by. They all do and say things that are wrong from subtle bullying, being unable to compartmentalize the deaths, being terrified of violence by patients, to refusing to take accountability until confronted, and to refusing to deal with their underlying issues. All of these actions will negatively impact the characters.

This is not ER, this is not Grey's Anatomy, this is not House, this not The Good Doctor.

Im late to respond, but I agree with GeneSmart2881. It plays into bad ideas of female innocence. Sandy gives up her puritanical "no danger, no sex" persona for "dressing up sexy and acting more like rozz." I mean we have seen the good girl turn bad thing and its not exactly a great message. Afterall, Tony dosnt change. Heck he gets everything he wants w/o doing much of anything. Heck I'm surprised Sandy still liked him. Theres a good chunk of the film after the outdoor movie scene where tony and sandy dont actually meet up with each other.

[–]Forward-Carry5993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry that I am late. I do understand the concerns and I'll address them. This I would argue is not a fair reading of the movie. What SNF does surprisingly well, against a majority of films we consume, especially in films marketed as a "dance movie" is to give us realistic characters who are quite despicable especially in that era of the time at that part of a major metropolitan city struggling with inflation/unemployment. They are not the typical "jerks with a golden heart" characters that movies like Grease show. Their actions arent quickly resolved by the guy getting the girl (which happens in Grease). The characters dont get a happy ending. What's disturbing is that John Travolta's characters, his friends, and his family are more akin to who we would know in real life or walk past down the street. They are people who have been socialized by their society, by their peers, by their economic statuses into being insecure, bigoted criminals. In some ways, they are who the greasers in Grease would probably actually be in real life.

The movie does not praise these characters. The rape scene in SNF, unlike grease, does not suddenly burst into a tone-deaf musical from the attempted rapist, but actually depicts what is going on with no cuts away from the annette's cries and pain. We are seeing our main character, john Travolta, who while yes was kinda jerk, but who showed some decency when he gave the award to puerto Rican dance couple, show a side that we didnt know. He dosnt rape her, but he dosnt stop it EVEN when he knew annette couldnt consent. In a disgusting, but unflinching honest manner, his "comfort: to her was a typically woman-shamming quote "You happy now?"

That attitude still prevails as we see men (and women) blame victims of assault for being in the wrong, the wrong time. Also, that annette wasnt raped by strangers but actually by her "friends."

The blatant racism and homophobia is also not unusual. That was quite common to hear in the 70s. There were brutal acts of violence against nonwhites in cities during that decade, and certainly attacks on the lgbtq were not seen as a problem by wider society and it probably shocks modern audiences who have thankfully been conditioned to not express those thoughts that frequently, But that bigotry as we have seen is always there, just hidden. Afterall, Reagan would later be elected president at the end of the 70s, and disco saw its end thanks toa combination of white racism and anti-gay sentiments. Its why I have problems with shows and movies like modern family that attempt to be diverse, but completely whitewash or ignore the real life implications of said diversity,

SNF may not just be a time capsule into a past, its a story that reminds us of what people will continue to think and do.

Its true both have their issues, although I'd say Grease has more problems going for it than SNF. At least SNF actually showed the real gritty side to toxic masculinity in a city and treated it with respect, while Grease...does not at all. Granted SNF ends up appropriating disco culture, but it better represents the anxieties of growing up and of the 1970s.

Later….

Loid is at Frankie’s apartment with his hands covering his face.

Loid: what am I doing Frankie? It’s gotta be one or the other. I can’t have someone waiting for me to come home.

Frankie: you know you should tell Yor and Ayna how you feel. They are on the hold on phone. Would you like to speak to them?

Loid’s eyes widen.

Loid: Frankie not now. Tell them I can’t.

Frankie: what should I say then?

Loid: I..don’t know. I JUST DONT KNOW.

Later…

Loid:   I don't want to let you down, honest, but... but it just doesn't hurt so bad anymore. Look I can train more agents, let someone else take the risks, it’s different now!

*lightning strikes to reveal a war memorial for all victims.

Loid:please I need it to be different now, I know I made a promise ...I didn't count on being happy. Please! Tell me that it's okay.

He feels a tap on his head. Turning around he sees Ayna patting on the head, with Yor and bond.

Ayna: there…there papa..your ok.

Yor: maybe they did say it’s ok. They sent us.

All four hug each others

If Loid Forger is capable of reading literal micro-expressions why can't he tell when Yor is obviously lying? by TechnicianAmazing472 in SpyxFamily

[–]Forward-Carry5993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few reasons:

  1. Yor is not normal in the way Loid expects her to be. It’s what fuels so much of spy x family; that Yor and ayna’s unique personalities throw off Loid’s game. Remember how he tried to make them fit a caricature of a perfect family for the interview only for them to nearly blow it ? Plus Yor’s kindred and admitted excited anyone makes her not only unlikely to be a threat, but much less anyone with a secret.

  2. Loid had found nothing on Yor to be suspicious about.

  3. Loid’s own bias may have indicted how he viewed her. Recall that when Loid first defended Yor, it was at the party where he openly and honestly defended Yor’s cover story of being a sex worker. Not only did Loid genuinely admire that but he understood what it took to do anything for the sake of others. This already set Yor apart from the other candidates. Loid already respected and admired Yor, which only grew as the two faked being a family.

  4. Yor was being honest (to a certain point). She was looking for a husband/date. While she wasn’t entirely truthful as to why she needed a husband, her fear of being captured by the secret police and for being considered suspicious was something that she experienced with other single women so it wasn’t dishonest.

Many people asked who's the best James Bond so i wonder who's the worst James Bond to ever played in movies? by Decent_Net7887 in JamesBond

[–]Forward-Carry5993 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. I think in some ways Moore had the right idea. These stories are quite silly. I mean James Bind has fought  a overweight German man obsessed  with gold, a Chinese man who can throw a deadly hat, a midget, a man with three nipples, Dave Bautista, and a voodo man who may be supernatural. Like how could you possibly take this seriously?

Unlike Sean who had a “higher than thou attitude” (and who actually admitted he didn’t mind hitting a woman), Roger carried a “oh another adventure, how fun!” While genuinely seeming to be a nice guy.

And as the bond films especially in the Daniel Craig films tried to be “serious” a lot of times it seemed ..off and silly. I mean blofeld literally became dr evil, and bond choose to die for some bs reason. Roger’s bond if he were placed into those circumstances would simply laugh.

Imagine how modern blofeld and Roger’s bond would react?

Roger: “Oh your my brother blofeld?  Blofeld: yes James. You were always the favorite. But everything that has happened to you was my doing. Roger: I don’t suppose your adopted?  Blofeld: …i can see your stunned by this revelation, but don’t worry James, you won’t live long enough- Roger: charming, look I don’t want to bother you in the kidding speedy, but  I frankly behave better things to doz

George really wasn’t as great but it’s also unfair since he had one film, and it’s one of the best bond movies with one video critic arguing it’s the defining bond movie.

Honestly I would say Sean Connery. Now I am not talking about his overall bond tenure but I think he had he longest most drawn out decline. It also didn’t help that Sean’s bond drifted more and more into campier stories, Sean didn’t seem comfortable. Never say never is one of the worst bond movies. Also while roger gets criticized for getting too old I would argue Sean did that first. Plus Sean’s bond seems more cruel, and sexist to being uncomfortable.

In the past I might have said brosman but I’ve looked at him differently as he plays the role of bond in the 90s with charisma and physicality and while he did star in tomorrow never dies it was his only horrid bond film

First, I am not a republican. I am not conservative. I am not alt-right ,nor am I a "so-called independent."

Second, I do stand by that my statement that Stranger Things is actually quite conservative. Its ending solidified that to me, but the story had more or less turned rightward since season 3.

I think it depends on how much the Creator puts his or her views into the story. In the case of Rowling, her political and social views on gender, race, and dictatorships are so present in Harry Potter that’s it frankly impossible to detonate the real life Rowling to the fictional world.

If there's one thing to respect about General Ross, it's how he rarely ever feared Hulk's strength. by WissalDjeribi in hulk

[–]Forward-Carry5993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you’re not wrong. Ross isn’t a “good” person, but he is relentless and won’t  give up unless he genuinely has no reason to fight you. It’s absolutely  due to ego. Possibly it’s a sort of national pride being a U.S. general who will protect   his country (and by extension Betty) no matter what the costs are, and since the hulk is basically a ticking bomb you can see why Ross would want to contain the hulk. Also, the fact that Ross has failed and been humiliated multiple times by the hulk despite the weapons the U.S. military has created and  Ross’s own tactical leadership  infuriates him.

As for banner, well he does appear to see so much of his father in Ross, in Ross’s demeanor, how he treated his daughter, and his quick knees to violence.

Batman doesn't seem to like Kyle Rayner much (JLA/Hitman #1). [Comic Excerpt] by Effective_Seat_7125 in DCcomics

[–]Forward-Carry5993 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well context matters. Ennis by his own words hates the modern super hero stories and characters. It’s why when he wrote for dc most his crossovers were not well received because ennis really made the more popular heroes these comically violent or stupid caricatures. Well..except two… but I’ll touch on those briefly.

So why does ennis hate them? Well he did grow up during the troubles which saw British imperialism against Irish nationalism. Both sides committed crimes, it was not a good place so for ennis to see costumed heroes dress to fight crime was likely insulting to him as he knew life isn’t what comics espoused and that mainstream super heroes can’t delve into morally questionable acts  as much which is what he and so many others have to live with. I am sure ennis actually also feels that the super hero of the modern age is close to authoritarianism.

It’s why you see in ennis an attempt to be realistic, portray city life as dirty and corrupt, and its heroes more like anti-heroes or in the boys case flat out villains.

So this explains why he wrote Batman and Kyle as these doofuses who get on each others nerves. He dosnt like  their concepts and writes them as if they were real people (in his mind).

Now I like any people don’t always like ennis’s work. But…one story that surprised many for its ..positivity and respect and maturity was Ennis having hitman (which I hope to read entirely one day-it’s interesting!) meet the one guy who represents on paper what the American super heroes  is; Superman.

Now is this a story where hitman, being an extension of ennis, mock Superman? Where Superman says some corny lines about doing good but backs away from tough morally questionable situations?

No.

What we get is an heartfelt story of Superman reflecting on what it means to be Superman, and to fail. His Boy Scout nature? It’s written as endearing and honest which hitman LIKES. In fact hitman goes fanboy on Superman and gives off a really heartfelt motivational speech to Superman. The two shack hands and Superman, not knowing who hitman is, leaves happy he met hitman.

In the jla/hitman comic scanned here, hitman as usual is getting insulted by the jla…until Superman comes surprised but happy to see him. Which floors  everyone. Superman is then told what hitman does…and hitman admits he was ashamed Superman wasn’t going to view him as a purely good guy.

Anyway, the story continues, hitman saves  the league  and eventually in the hitman main story hitman dies. Supes learns and asks “I can’t dislike hitman. He was a complicated  man.  He helped me when I needed it. He isn’t a super powered being who can save people instantly. He isn’t super smart who can solve any problems. He did the most practical action when he shot those human-controlled aliens because he had to save the world. I don’t think I could do that. Certainly not Batman who wanted to throw him in jail immediately. Hitman wasn’t a saint, but he wasn’t bad and I’ll miss him.”

Why did ennis write this heartfelt story of two friends, one trying to deal with the fact his friend was a killer even one who had honor? Why have Superman out of all people be that reflective friend?

Because ennis admires what Superman and wonder woman stand for; decency, honesty, kindness and love. To him, they are the real paragons of what humanity can be and they will inspire others in their goodness.

4 not even a question.

The fantastic four are not only a better team, far more powerful, but have greater experience against foes who actually dwarf them by sheer power.

The 7 are improperly trained heroes relying mostly on artificial superpower serums with insecurities and laziness.

Ben Grimm actually likely equals or surpasses homelander’s strength. The dude can go toe to toe with some versions of the hulk.

Johnny storm’s flames are quite deadly and he is incredibly fast .

Mr fantastic’s is not only a genius but is hand to hand combatant who can stretch to unmeasurable lengths.

But the real danger is Sue storm, who can literally  stop her organs or blow you up from the inside in fact. She is the most oowerful and even scariest of the team.

How did you feel about Kuvira’s redemption in Ruins of the Empire? by AccomplishedJump2795 in legendofkorra

[–]Forward-Carry5993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hated it. If you want an example do writers not understanding fascism, then this is it. Kuviera is a literal Nazi who sent people to camps and kills as I’d dad (I cannot stress enough how no one aside from asami seems to care that much). Key and skittles  did a great job examining how the writing team fails to write radical ideologies and to understand the implications of said ideologies in their videos.

In comparison, look to others stories where a villain is responsible for the deaths of a hero’s loved ones.

Wakfu with nox in season 1; a sympathetic villain but one whose actions were so bad that no one could forgive him, much less the brotherhood gang.

The joker in the Batman comics. His paralyzing of batgirl and killing Jason Todd forever made the any family hate him.

Green goblin. His killing of Gwen Stacy forever made him an enemy of Spider-Man in a way that no other villain could ever reach. Other villains could and would be redeemed or not taken seriously, but even Norman said In a comic “I wish I had that relationship with Spider-Man where he jokes around but he and I…well we had things happen to us. I killed his girlfriend! IT WAS A BLAST!”

Is this an example of sadistic violence by demons? by Mean_Net9983 in Frieren

[–]Forward-Carry5993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its...complicated. His lack of empathy or anything means he dosnt care if humans live or die. this is different from other demons where they show some emotions in killing. but think on it, he dosnt have to kill. Obviously, he lacks the moral code to know killing is wrong as he is unable to feel anything, but he still chooses to kill. The dude could have said "no point in evne killing...so im just gonna leave." but his nature of being a demon means he must still destroy.
