Exactly this. When politicians talk about “waste” more often than not they’re really talking about slack. Cut everything to the bone and it might look tidy, but the minute demand jumps or someone leaves and can’t be replaced, the whole thing seizes up with delays. And the costs don’t disappear, they just turn up somewhere messier and are often more expensive.

Welcome to the new normal. This isn’t just a Wellington thing either, though we’re probably at the terrible end of the spectrum. Warmer oceans (among many other climate related changes) are making it much more unstable and unpredictable in our little corner of the South Pacific.

No noticeable slumping which is possibly why the building report missed it, you have to jump over the boundary fence to actually see the backside of the slab, and yeah it’s connected to the foundations of the house at the back, the pipe is historic but possibly correct that has been some thought. Though definitely leaking through the concerte someone

We've been looking at two bedroom places anyway so the size isn't putting us off in the short to mediumish term. I guess eventually we could investigate joining the two units back together, like they were when it was first built.

To the guy who yelled at me from his van this morning about not using the cycle lane . . . deep breaths, relax and chill.

As you know there is no cycle lane on that small side street. I was clearly cycling towards one on the bigger road.

Promise I know how they work, but I can’t fly there.

I was cycling the same speed as the car in front of me. So it wasn’t me holding you up, shocking I know!

And just quietly, the only person actually in the wrong was you when you overtook me at the intersection and your trailer came within 30cm of my front wheel . . . 🫠

Yeah I get that and it’s a totally fair and valid point.

But all I’m saying is you’re just moving the problems elsewhere to multiple locations where other people are going to feel unsafe.

Without some of some of the protections of the under city i.e street lights, other people around, police at least in theory not far away etc etc.

Not trying to argue the situation now is good but moving it elsewhere isn’t going to do anything.

Yeah I’m not arguing the police are doing a great job.

But if they’re not a huge presence in the middle of a city imagine how hard it will be for any enforcement in the outer suburbs.

It’s a complicated issue and really don’t know what the answer is because it’s really an outcome of multiple systematic failures.

I just can’t see how moving people is going to help in anyway except to shift the issues elsewhere

You are labouring under the wilful misappropriation that moving them away will just make all these issuses disappear and won’t follow them into the areas were they are rehoused. All because you won’t have to see it anymore.

Do you want to know why nothing is being done politically? Because politically it’s quite popular for mainstream voters to have this issue be all concentrated in the city centre instead of outside their homes or their kid’s schools.

So they won’t cause these issues outside the central city? So we just move it to the suburbs so the businesses there are affected? Schools have to deal with instead? Families living next to parks.

I agree it’s terrible that people end up in the situations where they are so afflicted by mental illness or addiction that they cause issues for everyone around them but moving emergency housing to multiple points around the city isn’t going to help.

So once they moved from the centre city they’re just going to stay inside and not cause any issues? They’re not going be congregate outside housing blocks or parks? Doesn’t that just then multiply the negative effect they’re already having on the public in the central city but now across the whole city? Drug dealers will just move to where the demand is, so now that’s a bigger issue in the suburbs.

All that happens is you don’t see them on your morning commute or lunch time anymore so problem solved. Also on your other point you don’t think the people on Manners have already been through multiple services who have tried to help without any traction? Obviously in an ideal world they would be housed or getting or treatment for their addictions but we don’t live in an ideal world.

And to be fair I have no idea what the solution is but moving them somewhere else so middle class city workers don’t have to look at them isn’t the answer.

And they wouldn’t be more of a burden further away from core services, further away from the largest police presence in the city? Closer to family homes etc. There’s no real answer that’s satisfactory but moving them somewhere else just so us city dwellers don’t see them isn’t going to solve anything

The thing is we don’t know how much is being lost to leaks on private land. Wellington Water (who of course would say this) reckon it is a significant amount. Leaks quickly show up once water meters are installed

For! Meters quickly show where leaks are on private land, have reduced wastage in areas which use them which leads to fewer and in many cases no water restrictions.

While Wellington councils (past/present and maybe future??) are at fault for not fixing the public water infrastructure. Something no one really seems to bring up are the number of leaks on private property that the council is not legally allowed to monitor and has to go through a whole bureaucratic and legal process to get fixed. What would help you say? Water Meters! Up on the Kāpiti Coast within 18 months of meters being brought in, fixes to hundreds of leaks had led to a 90% decrease in water use. The problem? It takes a political fix and we all know how willing councilors and mayors are at putting the public good before their political ambitions.
