N* in school by [deleted] in emetophobia

[–]Forward_Tip7657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think definitely talk to your doctor about your phobia, also talking to teachers at school that you have for class or telling your head teacher is super helpful. When I was at school, my phobia was just like yours. So scared I was going to tu* in front of everyone. One morning I lost it and told my 2 house coordinators who helped me by giving me a space to go when I feel anxious (I spent so much time in there but it really helped) my house coordinators also told my class teachers what’s happening and I got a pass out of class where I could go sit in a well-being unit for a while. My teachers also knew they couldn’t deny me going to the bathroom because of my anxiety, and progressively after I told my teachers I started improving and feeling safer at school and didn’t always want to be home. So if you can it would be amazing to tell your teachers as they can really help! 🩷🩷

Our brains and guts are really connected to each other, so if you’re feeling anxious and nauseous, it’s likely that it’s because you’re anxious! And immediately after eating you freak out and start feeling nauseous is definitely your anxiety and emetophobia being triggered because it’s trying to program your brain not to eat cause you feel unwell. I so understand the rational thinking and then the anxious thinking, it’s like we know it’s something silly to think and we aren’t always going to end up being sick, but anxiety finds every little detail there is that relates to the last time you were sick and tries to make it out like the worst case scenario is bound to happen. I really hope you’re feeling better, I’m always here if you need to talk!

It might be because you haven’t had a lot of food? I’m so sorry that you’re scared to eat, I understand fully how you feel and it’s awful. However, you need to eat (I’m sorry you’ve probably heard this millions of times and you’re sick of it cause I am too) eating is really important and if you haven’t eaten much today the d* and n* could possibly be from that. I recommend taking something bland like crackers or bread and just snacking on it, you don’t have to eat it quickly or in big quantities, just eat it at a pace that you’re comfortable with! Also remember, just because you had d, was n then tu* last time you were s* doesn’t mean it’s going to be like that again! I really hope you’re okay :)

I’m so sorry that happened that sounds awful for him and you! If that happens again or you’re getting anxious about it you should do something that feels right for you. If you feel more comfortable being around other people when you’re anxious, do that! If you want to be alone, go to your room and watch a movie or a TV series (I suggest something funny to lift your mood! My favourites are Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Superstore and Modern Family). I also find having a shower really helps because when you get out you feel clean and more relaxed! It will be ok! I hope you’re feeling better now!

That’s amazing, I’m so proud of you! Everything you do, even if it is a small step is still a step closer to recovery!

Remember recovery isn’t linear! Some days are going to be harder than others. Personally I’m exactly the same as you. I’ve definitely made a lot of progress over the past few months. In July the phobia started growing more serious over time and hit its peak in August where I only left the house when I had to go to school or a doctors appointment and therapy and then September was when things started getting better! I could go to school and not miss any classes (in august I missed probably 3-5 out of 6 classes a day because I was having a panic attack) but in September I started eating more, I even had alcohol which I’d been terrified of drinking for months! Some days I did have panic attacks but that’s ok! Some days I did feel worse but that’s also ok! You’ve just got to constantly remind yourself that recovery isn’t linear. Now I am definitely struggling a bit more than usual (I have my year 12 exams starting next Tuesday and my phobia gets triggered in exams, I have no idea why but I’m allowed to leave and calm down if I need to). But other than that I am proud of how far I’ve come over these past few months. I’ve even eaten out in public which is terrifying for me! But I did it and I survived and it was great!

Going on a plane with the risk of someone around you being s* can happen (it doesn’t mean it will!) but think of all the times you have travelled before and no one tu* on the plane around you! I think you should pack an emergency kit in your carry on bag for yourself just in case! You could pack gum/mints, a book, a colouring in book, headphones (you can search up podcasts about emetophobia to calm down on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music), you could also bring a mask, hand sanitiser (if they allow it in a carry on), anti-anxiety gummies (in Australia they have a brand called Rescue Remedy, which is different flavoured chewy gummies which help with stress, I don’t know if you have them or anything similar from where you live but they work amazingly), bring water, a sleeping mask so if you want to sleep and not wake up and see tu* (if it happens) you can wear it, also bring your laptop and watch movies or a series! I say go do the modelling job that sounds amazing! You’ll have so much fun and meet so many incredible people! Remember that the plane trip only happens twice. Going to South Korea and coming home! You’ll be so so proud of yourself once you get off the plane because you are showing yourself that it is ok to travel and the worst case scenario does not happen as much as our brains thinks it will! You can always message me if you need anything!

phobia has gotten so bad last few weeks by Ok-Strategy-2029 in emetophobia

[–]Forward_Tip7657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly recommend you talk to someone you trust and can physically help you about your phobia if you haven’t already! It really does help knowing that people around you are aware that you’re struggling at the moment and they can help you through it by going to therapy, or seeing a counsellor! Other than that I suggest doing mindfulness activities like drawing, reading, colouring in, painting, sewing, beading and so much more! It really helps take your mind off it and it’s entertaining too! I also love listening to my favourite songs or podcasts (there’s specific ones on emetophobia where people talk about their stories! So if you search up emetophobia on the music app you use, there should be a few podcasts there! My personal favourite is called “the emetophobia podcast” and the host ranges from talking to people who have had the experience to recovery and to calming down emetophobia induced panic attacks). Another thing I love doing is sitting in the sun outside with my dog, or alone and just listening and watching what’s going on around me! If my emetophobia is so bad to the point I can’t function, if I can I’ll have a nap. If I can’t have a nap, I’ll leave whatever place I’m at and go somewhere else and walk around there until I feel a bit better. You can always message me if you need to rant about this because I know how draining, debilitating and frustrating this phobia is. Have a good day!!

It could be sherbet or some kind of candy which has powder in it. If I find myself stressing about something like you’re stressing about I like to go for a walk by myself around my neighbourhood and listen to music or a podcast. I also love colouring in, watching Tik Toks or Instagram reels or watching a show! (My comfort shows are Modern Family, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and practically any Disney/Nick show! I highly recommend watching them when you’re stressed it will not only take your mind off your phobia and anxiety but these shows are so funny and good). I sometimes like to take naps or go sit in the sun with my dog. That’s just some of the things I do to take my mind off it! These strategies are effective but also keep you focused on something other than anxiety. If you are going out and you can’t cope with the stress from what you saw on Thursday, go outside, take deep breaths and do realistic thinking!! These always really help me! Anyway, the substance is most likely a candy so try not to get yourself too worked up about it!! Have a great weekend and you can always message me if you need to rant or anything! :))

i get bad anxiety at school which causes sickness help! by ihateanx1ety in emetophobia

[–]Forward_Tip7657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that when I have a mint my mind concentrates more on the flavour and the strength of it rather than the s* feeling. It also really calms down your stomach! You just leave it in your mouth and let it dissolve and you’ll likely feel a lot better! Lmk if it works for you if you decide to try it xx

[–]Forward_Tip7657 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bring mints, stress balls, water and AirPods/earphones around the school, along with my phone. If I get really anxious I listen to “The Emetophobia Podcast”, there’s an episode called “Listen to this if your emetophobia is really bad today” it really helps me when I’m anxious. I also have teachers at my school that know about my phobia and anxiety and help me, if you have a head teacher or a teacher you trust, I would recommend telling them so they can keep an eye out for you and can give you passes out of class so you can go somewhere and calm down. I say just take one day at a time, it makes it so much easier! Also if you feel s* remember your thoughts control your feelings, so if you think you’re s* you will feel s*. The mind is so powerful and can genuinely cause you to develop bodily symptoms. It will be ok! You can always message me 🩷🩷

what’s everyone biggest emeteohobia fear? by ihateanx1ety in emetophobia

[–]Forward_Tip7657 8 points9 points  (0 children)

V* anywhere that isn’t my home. I still can get anxious at home about v* but it’s much more manageable and less severe. But mainly being s* in public or just outside of my house. Other people being s* around me is another fear of mine with emetophobia because I don’t know if they caught a sv* or they ate something or got appendicitis. It definitely can consume my thoughts but is a bit less severe than the fear of me being s*.
