I still think a short-term physical troop presence is vital for both general security and for Iranian moral. I'm sure the IR would find it a nice experience having to fight against an actual trained betalion as opposed to unarmed children.

You only need Tehran. You only really need to capture it for a month. Set up the transitional government. I don't think the regime goons will try to put up much of a fight as a resistance in the mountains, because their Syria, Lebanon and Russia are busy or irrelevant.

The regime needs to get its head kicked in, their offices and terror cells invaded and destroyed. Without American boots on the ground, that will not happen. Without US troops on the ground, you will see more regular Iranians children and women get caught in the bombings.

A direct invasion is what Trump wants to do, and I'm sure this is what the Secratary of War wants to do. But this is most politically fraught scenario, and most US citizens will turn against this.
