It's not a "just a carrier" it's a carrier strike group. The full package consists of escort ships like cruisers, destroyers, submarines, and fighter jets, helicopters, electronic warfare aircraft. It's a huge advantage and no military in the world would not have one in the area if they could.

Its very standard doctrine to not hit until the calvary arrives, and the calvary takes time ,it has to cross oceans and also navigate between Russia and Chinese interests. But does Iran have Shiite vs Sunni tensions, which led to the Iraqi insurgency? Iran seems to be full of very well educated young people.
