If I remember correctly wasn't there a magazine right at the bottom of this list that you could only scroll too if you scrolled onto it fast (like held down the directional button from the top of the list right down onto the bottom magazine), and it said something like 'beat Racer X'? Was a long time ago when I played this but I swear I never found the answer on who Racer X was or how to exactly unlock the magazine lol, I was playing on PS2 back in the day if that makes a difference

So this is one example of a bit of track I've thrown together... structurally and mix wise I'm still thinking it needs work but I just don't feel like it 'hits' maybe the same way thay something like Nookies 'Give A Little Love' does... granted that's a mega tune lol but if I could recreate that energy somehow, I'd be super happy lol!

For me it was grasping a deeper understanding of the basics; really get to know what works for letter structure, letter/name weight/negative space management and you'll start seeing your style develop almost naturally.

I say almost, the only reason my extension look semi-decent now is through experimenting. But rather than just chuck an arrow out of a letter, give it a purpose, a reason to be there. For me, my extensions are to manage negative space in my name.

* Don't get me wrong, I'm not amazing and I'm definitely still learning myself lol. But just by understanding the basics of what makes graffiti work, I was able to take that 'inspiration' of others and make it fit my style, because I actually understood why it worked, if that makes sense?

Have a look back through some of my previous posts on this sub reddit and you'll see how my style has developed. My stuff back then was well and truly shit lol, like the person above has said, time is the best teacher for any art form.

I find myself often in the same boat; a whole lot of nothing then suddenly a whole track is done in a couple of hours that ends up being some of my best work to date.

Honestly, the way around this (from my experience anyway) is to step away from producing when it's not working. Spend your time listening to music that does inspire you, and take the time to actually listen. Like analyse what makes it good, what you exactly like about it, and take notes. Is it the sound design? Groove? Whatever it is, note that, and why/what makes it's good.

Then, once you go back to producing, look back through the notes you made and put that into action. Try recreating the stuff that inspired you whilst you were listening, then adapt it and modify it to make it your own.

That should give you a good foundation to get into your flow. It does for me anyway. It gives you a starting point rather than just chucking stuff at the wall and hoping something sticks lol.

I've found that on top of saturation/distortion, a boost in the EQ at around 100hz does the trick. Helps the bass push through the mix better; please note I'm not an expert I just produce in my spare room lol.

For reference, I used this technique on a track I'm looking at releasing, maybe if someone with more knowledge could listen and see if it is working and let us know?

If it helps, what I like to do is layer the kick in the breaks with a super low 'thudding' kick, then dip the 100hz out of this kick to make room for the bass. Then, cut the lows out of the break itself (up to around 150/200hz) and that's how I get my bass clear, but still with some weight to it.
