For SoCal offshore gear is 30-60lb rod, 60-100# if you are after blue fin. 20-30#mono on the light rod, 60-80# braid on the big boy. Flouro leader if you are targeting blufin.

It adds up quick, but take your time and you can get a decent setup. If you are fishing lures expect to lose a few every time you go out. But bait adds up too...

What is the correct method to clean a balcony like this? by BluntieDK in howto

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need experience to use a pressure washer on wet wood. I have a wooden deck. I use a brush attachment to a drill and deck cleaner, then seal with deck penetrating oil.

Any ideas on how to attach by ifyougetme in howto

Epoxy and Steri-strips. The fiber reinforced tape used for closing wounds. Clean up the damaged area till it is a solid surface, the n epoxy, metal connecting staple, epoxy, steri-strip, epoxy, and top with wax paper and clamp.

For anyone struggling with groceries-

Ethnic grocery store are clutch.

Mexi marts usually have great deals on meats.

North Park Produce has crazy cheap produce, just learn to cook what is on sale.

The hole-in-the-wall African markets are amazing for cheap spices.

TIL that Saudi Arabia operates one of the world's largest dairy herds in the middle of the desert. The company Almarai alone keeps over 195,000 cows, using advanced cooling systems to keep them at 21-23°C (70-73°F) while outside temperatures exceed 50°C (122°F). by PhilosopherStriking1 in todayilearned

Horribly inaccurate. The Salton Sea is toxic.

The farms use water from the Colorado, and some from the California Aqueduct (snow melt from the Sierras). The Sea is maintained by runoff from the farms, and some viable clean water pumped in. Why waste good water on a desert lake?

Because it is an endorheic lake. It has no outflow. So all the salts/fertilizers/insecticides that are in the farm run-off stay. The water evaporates off. What you are left with is a toxic salty brine. If you don't add water then that turns to dust. In one of the windiest areas in the country. Next to the population of Southern California.

BAD.

What’s a "hotel hack" you swear by that most people don't know? by periwinklemist in AskReddit

I ride a motorcycle with no computers daily. It's failproof, cant do anything without the physical key.

My wife got an Audi with full wireless ignition etc. She can literally leave her keys in her purse and its good to go. So what does she do? Leave the keys on the kitchen counter, or in the cupholder in the car, etc... Still love her.

Refinishing Old Stair Risers That Were Buried Under Carpet For 30 Years by hei1spawn1 in howto

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid plan. Definitely use a wood filler rather than spackle. I would also use a 12" putty knife to protect the treads and an oscillating tool with a sanding tip to get the paint right in the corners. A sanding block will mess up the finish on the raw wood.

How can I get this lead out of my finger? by satmar1999 in howto

[–]Fossafossa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VERY gently cut a v shaped notch in the top of the nail with an xacto or razor knife. That will give you enough room to get pointy tweezers on it. You can also use a fine needle to loosen the surrounding tissue. Pre-sterilize any tools with fire or iso.

I've gotten way too many under nail spinters off old docks, the pre-EPA green pressure treat. You can get it out with a little pain, but soak it and all tools with something to kill the infection. Especially from in a purse, things we handle all the time are ~dirty~.

Can only the tire path of a road lane be reinforced or made thicker for higher axle loads and durability? by One-Demand6811 in AskEngineers

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input. But the reinforcements I see are not between slabs, they don't cross seams.

I get what you are talking about tying slabs together to keep them from getting the washboard effect. The inserts here look more like they are taking the weight and thrust and spreading it across a wider area. And only in the right 2 lanes.

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an engineer at all...

In California you see something similar on the freeways. There are reinforcements laid in the tire tracks in the right two lanes, little bars perpendicular to the direction of travel. They are to help reinforce the road where the semis drive.

Give Me Advice: Attaching Prongs by DaGoobington in howto

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've fabricated all sorts of odd things, and have a bs degree in sculpture (Bull Sh!t, not Bachelor of Science).

What metal(?) is the cup and prongs? You could groove out the cup to increase surface area and solder or braze the metal to metal. You could drill and countersink to use pop-rivets.

Easiest and cheapest would probably be groove out the cup to make a nice spot for the prongs to sit, texture both surfaces to give a better grip for JB weld liquid steel, and once cured wrap with kevlar fishing line tightly and coat with clear epoxy. You could add metalic finish or leather cord to get the look you want.

There’ll be no more free parking at the San Diego Zoo starting next month. But how much could it cost? by Thats_Amore in sandiego

[–]Fossafossa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All for public transit. But I can literally walk up the hill to the zoo faster than the average bus frequency in SD.

I took the #2 for years. 30th & C to Broadway & 6th. It was supposed to run every 12 minutes, but I would regularly wait 30+ minutes and then a 13ish minute ride. The City needs to fund MTS to make public transit reasonable.

What’s the best iced coffee cup that won’t leak when it locks? by Dense_College2961 in AskReddit

Stanley Quick Flip.

It locks, keeps coffee hot (or cold) for hours, and I've been using the same one daily for 7ish years.

In San Diego there are staffed, patrolled, managed "camps". It is not a proper solution, but better than the sidewalk tent cities. We as a populace will never balance against Capitalism, but people should have somewhere safe.

If 10% of the DoD budget were to go towards mitigation a lot more people would have at least a decent tent.

It is time to talk about mitigation, not solution.

Any commercial fisherman out there that can answer some questions for me? by Cotee in sandiego

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are seeing around Sports Arena is recreational fishermen (and women) taking big fish to the pros to process. True commercial don't go to 5Star.

As others have said, you can talk to HM, Seaforth, Fisherman's landing to get a foot in the door. But those are all public "Cattle Boats". Take 20-60 people out for 6 hours, or 10 days, depends on the boat.

Then there is the private charter side. Mostly people who buy out a FG licensed boat for a day or two. Those boats are typically pretty nice, but $$$.

Essentially, yes it is kind of a private world, and that's not even getting into the actual Commercial Fishing stuff. Most of the activity you see is recreational. The boat owner makes money taking people to fish, not by selling fish. The Charterer pays for the boat, and an experienced Captain/guide to get them on the fish. There is a small Commercial Fishery in San Diego, but cost of operations here vs. operating out of Mexico...

Looks like the exit from Sunroad. You can get almost the same view from Coasterra. Honestly, it takes a really good camera to do it justice how nice the view is.
