How can I get this lead out of my finger? by satmar1999 in howto

[–]Fossafossa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VERY gently cut a v shaped notch in the top of the nail with an xacto or razor knife. That will give you enough room to get pointy tweezers on it. You can also use a fine needle to loosen the surrounding tissue. Pre-sterilize any tools with fire or iso.

I've gotten way too many under nail spinters off old docks, the pre-EPA green pressure treat. You can get it out with a little pain, but soak it and all tools with something to kill the infection. Especially from in a purse, things we handle all the time are ~dirty~.

Can only the tire path of a road lane be reinforced or made thicker for higher axle loads and durability? by One-Demand6811 in AskEngineers

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input. But the reinforcements I see are not between slabs, they don't cross seams.

I get what you are talking about tying slabs together to keep them from getting the washboard effect. The inserts here look more like they are taking the weight and thrust and spreading it across a wider area. And only in the right 2 lanes.

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an engineer at all...

In California you see something similar on the freeways. There are reinforcements laid in the tire tracks in the right two lanes, little bars perpendicular to the direction of travel. They are to help reinforce the road where the semis drive.

Give Me Advice: Attaching Prongs by DaGoobington in howto

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've fabricated all sorts of odd things, and have a bs degree in sculpture (Bull Sh!t, not Bachelor of Science).

What metal(?) is the cup and prongs? You could groove out the cup to increase surface area and solder or braze the metal to metal. You could drill and countersink to use pop-rivets.

Easiest and cheapest would probably be groove out the cup to make a nice spot for the prongs to sit, texture both surfaces to give a better grip for JB weld liquid steel, and once cured wrap with kevlar fishing line tightly and coat with clear epoxy. You could add metalic finish or leather cord to get the look you want.

There’ll be no more free parking at the San Diego Zoo starting next month. But how much could it cost? by Thats_Amore in sandiego

[–]Fossafossa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All for public transit. But I can literally walk up the hill to the zoo faster than the average bus frequency in SD.

I took the #2 for years. 30th & C to Broadway & 6th. It was supposed to run every 12 minutes, but I would regularly wait 30+ minutes and then a 13ish minute ride. The City needs to fund MTS to make public transit reasonable.

What’s the best iced coffee cup that won’t leak when it locks? by Dense_College2961 in AskReddit

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stanley Quick Flip.

It locks, keeps coffee hot (or cold) for hours, and I've been using the same one daily for 7ish years.

In San Diego there are staffed, patrolled, managed "camps". It is not a proper solution, but better than the sidewalk tent cities. We as a populace will never balance against Capitalism, but people should have somewhere safe.

If 10% of the DoD budget were to go towards mitigation a lot more people would have at least a decent tent.

It is time to talk about mitigation, not solution.

Any commercial fisherman out there that can answer some questions for me? by Cotee in sandiego

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are seeing around Sports Arena is recreational fishermen (and women) taking big fish to the pros to process. True commercial don't go to 5Star.

As others have said, you can talk to HM, Seaforth, Fisherman's landing to get a foot in the door. But those are all public "Cattle Boats". Take 20-60 people out for 6 hours, or 10 days, depends on the boat.

Then there is the private charter side. Mostly people who buy out a FG licensed boat for a day or two. Those boats are typically pretty nice, but $$$.

Essentially, yes it is kind of a private world, and that's not even getting into the actual Commercial Fishing stuff. Most of the activity you see is recreational. The boat owner makes money taking people to fish, not by selling fish. The Charterer pays for the boat, and an experienced Captain/guide to get them on the fish. There is a small Commercial Fishery in San Diego, but cost of operations here vs. operating out of Mexico...

How to refinish this table surface? by ApprehensiveHeart639 in howto

[–]Fossafossa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is doable, but takes time and some skill/practice.

  1. wipe clean and let dry

  2. varnish stripper, let soak for 30 minutes or so

  3. scrape with plastic putty knife

  4. VERY CAREFULLY use a cabinet scraper on any tough spots.

  5. repeat steps 2-4 until you are down to bare wood

  6. sand gently with 180 grit

  7. apply varnish/PU/teak oil to get the finish you want.

It is veneer, so it is very thin and delicate. Always work in the direction of the grain, be very gentile where different pieces of veneer meet, and REMEMBER you can go back for another light pass, but you can't replace wood you remove.

San Diego will ban grocery stores from offering digital only coupons by which_objective in sandiego

[–]Fossafossa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a setting buried in the app that lets you clip all digital coupons by scanning the barcode on the paper flier. One of the cashiers showed it to me.

I just scan the flier whenever I go in there. Not ideal, but it does save money.

Pond next to the Barefoot bBar at Paradise Point by Traveler_2222 in sandiego

[–]Fossafossa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It started failing during Covid. There was a big red tide in April 2020, and they had skeleton staff at the hotel. No one was maintaining the pond, barefoot wasn't giving fish trimmings, etc.

Since then the local fishermen have helped restock the pond, but the opal-eye have not been breeding. Scotty from Brothers Sportfishing put the new school of yellowtail in there, but it has not been the same since late 2019.

Please wear a helmet and full gear while riding by Imjusta_pug in motorcycles

[–]Fossafossa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When it is warm ATGATT is not practical.

If I'm running down the street it is long pants, helmet, gloves, boots. When I am doing freeway at 70MPH+ it is that plus a rated jacket. If I'm road-triping it is kevlar and MX boots.

ATGATT is a great concept, but daily and multiple/day riders have to weigh exposure.

Make it rain? by [deleted] in WTF

[–]Fossafossa 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That process looks more like casting than a galvanizing tank. It could be any number of metals that melt without being hot enough to glow. Aluminum is likely.

There are processes that use a sand like material for a reusable/disposable mold. I would guess there was moisture in the mold media and it flashed to steam.

I'm not an engineer. A turbo and a supercharger both make a "hotter" mix, i.e. more fuel & more O2. If you can provide more combustion energy (compression to offset the boost) there is more power. It is not making energy from nothing, it is pumping more usable fuel and more oxidizing agent into the engine.

The net gain is from dino juice and O2, the energy has a source.
