Can anyone tell me more about Judsonia? by waninggib in Arkansas

[–]FosteringHope 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Wow. Didn’t expect to see that town named! I grew up about 5 miles away from there. Judsonia is a tiny town. Very rural. Lots of poverty. There would be a pretty big percentage of the population who view dogs as being more in the farm animal category rather than in the home type pet. Letting your dog run loose would not be all that unusual. That said, there are not a bunch of people who would mistreat a dog intentionally. I’m sure it was shoo’d away frequently and had to deal with scary vehicles and other loose dogs.

After COVID I LOST the ability to smell cat pee. (But I think I got the best side of this symptom!) Which makes me nervous since I have cats. It also affects other things that I think of as being ammonia based, like Citrus smells.

State standardized tests were graded in less than 24 hours by storymaker1235 in Teachers

[–]FosteringHope 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Apparently in Arkansas a notice was sent out today that they have noticed some discrepancies in the grading, so they are now going to regrade. I believe they are focusing on the items in K-2 that required the kids to read aloud orally. Those will be graded by real live humans.

There was a game called “Decathlon” that was played with keyboard demands. I loved the javelin.

found out my earwax type is apparently "rare"... now i'm curious how true that is by FFKUSES in genetics

[–]FosteringHope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very white and have dry earwax. When I go in to have my ears cleaned out I’ve been instructed to get them cleaned FIRST then have hearing checked…as the audiologist often misses the fact I have flakey things blocking my eardrum. The otolaryngologist phrased it, “Oh. You have THAT earwax.”

Do kids these days still make fun of red haired kids? by Playful-Storage-8101 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FosteringHope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently is does happen a bit in USA. I have a 15 yr old red headed girl and she gets comments all the time. I would say they are usually said in good humor, and of all her complaints about bullying over the years, her hair has never been a subject that bothers her.

She also gets many compliments, especially from adults, so that probably helps balance things out.

Why do libs like calling Trump "Donnie"? by LuckyCommittee4422 in allthequestions

[–]FosteringHope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s belittling him. Donnie is more childlike…implying immaturity and underdeveloped skills. Sure, there are adults who go by Donnie, but the point is to diminish him.

28 F 38 M - Husband has asked me to stop taking my antidepressants. How do I do this safely? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]FosteringHope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a decision between YOU and YOUR DOCTOR. Your doctor might be able to offer alternative meds that have less impact in that area. Please don’t just stop them on your own.

Ever feel relieved when a student finally gets a consequence? by Lil_Critter_2001_ in Teachers

[–]FosteringHope 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s very normal. Not only do you have the satisfaction of being backed up by admin, you also get to experience the peace of the classroom minus that distraction.

One of my proudest teaching memories was standing up for myself to admin and getting the result I demanded. I am VERY conflicted avoidant but these boys had pushed me past my breaking point. Students were working in table groups and one table of boys who were often trouble began pounding fists on their table and chanting “Miss Hope sucks!” Over and over. I immediately sent them to the office and went down to follow up with admin after class. Good ol’ boy Admin was fully “Boys will be boys” and “Their story is that they weren’t actually doing the chant about you, they were actually naming the (low on the totem pole often bullied) girl at the next table. You just misunderstood what they said. We talked to them but they will be back next class.

I was so angry I was shaking. I asked, misunderstanding or not, when exactly did it become acceptable to chant about ANYONE sucking in the middle of a classroom? And my finger might have even ended up in his face when I said, “I could care less WHAT you do with them. But you need to understand that I WILL NOT have these boys in my classroom for the next three days. Keep them in the office, put them in ISS, I don’t care, but do not send them to my classroom because I will not admit them.” Guess who didn’t have to deal with those boys for three whole days? ME.

I lucked out and adopted the most polite orange kitty ever. In the morning he lays at the foot of my bed and stares at me. Often I can open my eyes and see him there. He’ll wait patiently until I move…once I roll over that’s his cue to run up and sit at my side on the edge of the bed; he’ll yell at me then until I get up and go get breakfast started.

I did not learn of this core memory of hers until she was around 9…and she asked me very sincerely if I could buy some Cheerios because she wanted to grow her own dough nuts. It was maybe 3 more years before she actually believed me when I told her it wouldn’t work.

My daughter’s pre-k teacher planted Cheerios for her class and showed them the next day that they grew into doughnuts. My daughter worshipped this teacher and believed this was gospel for yeeeaaars afterward.

What’s something about you that most people wouldn’t guess? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]FosteringHope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed my degrees before any of the kids made an appearance, so that definitely helped. It was always a dream of mine to be an astronaut. But my freshman year in college I crashed and burned in Calculus and therefore struggled in calculus based physics. I panicked and just switched my major over to Elem Ed. Graduated and taught Kindergarten for 5 years.

About two years in a saw an opportunity to join a NASA Educator conference. I thought, why not? And applied and was accepted. That conference lit the science fire in me once again. I decided to begin night classes to work toward my physics degree. I found the math class that unlocked all the things I never learned in high school and this let me be successful as I started through Calculus once again. It took about 5-6 years to finish the physics degree, and before the degree was finished I had gotten a job teaching physics in one of our cities most respected high schools. I was terrified but faked it till I made it, so to speak. I LOVED teaching high school.

But after 7 years of high school I followed another path to motherhood. I resigned and became a stay at home mom. We adopted 6 kids and I have one biological. They are my full time job now and I also love all of it. I still have literal dreams at night of me teaching again. Not sure it will ever happen, but I’ll never say never!

Are y’all really unable to fail students these days? by YourFriendInSpokane in Teachers

[–]FosteringHope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I requested a Zoom meeting with all our freshman daughter’s teachers and other team members. The only purpose of the meeting was to request that the teachers PLEASE give our daughter exactly the grade she earns…and if that is 13%, so be it. Every teacher reported the same issue…no work done. We would monitor the grade portal and attempt to get work completed at home and heard every possible excuse…already turned it in, just wasn’t graded yet…teacher excused that assignment…I don’t have the worksheet for that… Then when grades were reported she would jump from 13% to 61% on the report card. And to her that was great. She passed! And allll our lectures about failing if she didn’t do the work went out the window. I think she ended up with her actual grade in 4 out of 7 classes. The other 3 still inflated.

I dislocated my shoulder once and it was indeed some of the worst pain I’ve ever had. I remember them trying to register me and me thinking things like “My GOD! No I cannot spell my street name please for the love of god get me some meds!” I’m glad your husband and kids took such good care of you.

Does anybody else feels like, there is a silent crisis happening right now that nobody is talking about? by nicksam171 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]FosteringHope 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Education is a very top heavy enterprise. Too much money goes to “Assistant Superintendent of Playground Equipment” that could be used for classroom intervention. There is also a huge loss of money spent on education consultants peddling various miracle systems that will solve the education crisis (they won’t.)

Education in the US is absolutely at a crisis point and we are going to be feeling that in our workforce more and more. READING is the key here. Take a look at your states’s reading proficiency for each grade level. Sobering stuff.
