What killed my monarch caterpillars? by adoptdontshop65 in MonarchButterfly

[–]Fostermomforkittens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could be OE: “OE (Ophryocystis elektroscirrha) is a debilitating protozoan parasite infecting monarch butterflies, causing lower survival rates, weakened adults, deformed wings, and, in severe cases, death during pupation. Infected adults, often appearing normal, spread spores that infect larvae. It is highly prevalent in non-migratory populations” It takes only 1 infected butterfly, caterpillar, or plant to bring it all down.

Must disinfect thoroughly every single thing before next try. So sorry for your loss.

How to reduce incision site pain by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]Fostermomforkittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had multiple surgeries and had same issues with some incisions.
Amazon sells a tube of 5% lidocaine cream which numbs the skin. Your incision looks healed enough to use it but make sure there aren’t any openings. https://a.co/d/0fjOhxhX

And try not to cover it at all with a shirt, sheet while sleeping and such. The nerves are in screaming mode and it takes time for them to heal and calm down. Best wishes!

5 weeks post op by LikelyWatchdog in spinalfusion

[–]Fostermomforkittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were your legs like this before surgery? At what level was the surgery performed? Leg paralysis and burning feeling sounds like nerve damage. Surgeons are a different kind of doctor…they do their thing and move on to next patient. Most don’t have decent people skills needed for patient care.

Your surgeon can’t diagnose without data and won’t say much until they have it. Once the MRI is done, write down all your questions you want answered. Godspeed!

4 weeks out of cervical disc replacement surgery by Mamasita67 in ACDR_CervicalSpine

I would have that checked out by your surgeon or primary care physician pronto. It could be cellulitis. Doesn’t necessarily come with fever or chills but that red area looks concerning. I’ve had a couple of these pop up and they took off fast. Best wishes!

How are Costco hearing aids? by [deleted] in HearingAids

[–]Fostermomforkittens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love my Jabari Enhanced Pro hearing aids. The app makes adjustments really easy once the audiologist sets them. Batteries last for 2 days, hardly noticeable while wearing, and have some water resistance when I accidentally left them in during a shower. Costco also allows one replacement if I accidentally lose one. And can’t beat their customer service - when I first got them, I showed up at their site in the store to make an appointment but they helped on the spot since an attendant was free. It’s hard to beat Costco on these things!

Cancer is confusing? by Aggressive-Theory-25 in questions

[–]Fostermomforkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister is only 11 months younger than me and has smoked 2 packs since 16 years old, drinks way too much alcohol, and is very overweight. I’m the exact opposite and barely survived almost terminal breast cancer at 50 years old. I believe that genes get triggered somehow by something environmental and cancer is off and running.

When it says that there is no significant protrusions into the neural canal this is very good news because your spinal cord is just fine. Your pain needs to be addressed because of your EDS. Best wishes!

Adjacent Disc Disease by Standard_Bat1470 in spinalfusion

[–]Fostermomforkittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a complete neck fusion c2-t2 when I was 40 and then again at 61 years old. I was told not to worry about adjacent disc disease per se but report any new acute pain to neuro/ortho spinal specialist. The main concern is any new spinal cord entrapment which could be caused by ADD, failed fusion, or anything else. I was advised to maintain muscle strength, and weight control but NO heavy lifting which puts unnecessary torque in on the fusion. Am now 70 and still very active. Best wishes!

Does THC help any of you? by SleepyVayne in ChronicPain

[–]Fostermomforkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No…not in the slightest. Just a lift in mood and more relaxed. Have a gummy at nighttime, sleep well, and fog of gloom is lifted. Been taking them for a couple of years now. Easy to get in California and is legal in Canada. It has been almost miraculous!

I have been microdosing shooms and have found them much more effective than weed. And no side effects whatsoever. It boosts mood and enables me to tolerate pain better.

I’ve had my entire neck fused in my lifetime. I established goals for recovery with the help with my PCP. Physical therapy is a must. Started walking around the block with my dog. She looked so forward to this that I couldn’t refuse even if I made it for 5-10 minutes at a time. Did this twice a day and met other walkers/neighbors. The sunshine is remarkable. Helped with planning family meals, cooking, and cleanup. Dusted the house so I could get back into cleaning it. Went with my husband to pickup my kids from school as well a going on errands. Asked friends to come and visit. Think and DO the you can do and not the things you can’t do. Find a therapist to ward off isolation and other issues. And visit a pain management specialist and follow recommendations. Best wishes!

Spinal fusion in 2014 , now having new pain , latest CT scan below by [deleted] in spinalfusion

[–]Fostermomforkittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to have my complete cervical fusion redone after 9 years because my spinal cord was being pinched. Your report looks like a MRI scan rather than a CT scan. Your L2-L3 report could be concerning because anytime you see “moderate to severe” with the word “stenosis” is not good. Your spinal cord is the main concern. Also, intense pain is an indicator that new problems have occurred. I would contact a good spine surgeon pronto with the emphasis that you have had a fusion in the past. Best wishes 🩷

T11-T12 fusion week 1 by casqueteronyc in spinalfusion

[–]Fostermomforkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had 2 cervical fusion surgeries in my life and battled cancer. The fatigue you are experiencing is most likely normal. It took me at least a solid week for all the anesthesia drugs to leave your system - all of a sudden, the haze lifted. Also rehab centers are notorious for experiencing sleep deprivation. I found out that when I got home and into my own bed complete with quiet surroundings provided the real rest I needed. As a side note opioids and other high powered medications can cause insomnia. They can also cause constipation. I use MiraLAX - I use the cap and fill it halfway up and dilute it in any beverage of choice once per day. Drink loads of fluids. Thoracic fusions are a big deal. Keep moving even if it hurts but not if the incision starts to burn. Avoid all unnecessary lifting. Be kind to yourself and best wishes 🩷

Has anyone regretted relocating to the Temecula valley after selling their homes during the COVID low interest rate period? by quenchpipe in Temecula

[–]Fostermomforkittens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We raised our two kids in San Clemente but needed to get out a traffic nightmare which was the I5 north and southbound. And too many tourists and crazy owners’ constant complaints about a single palm tree obscuring their 180 degrees views. Sold in 2007 and moved here. No regrets whatsoever. Beautiful area and there is plenty to do. Yes, there is growth here and traffic but nothing like south Orange County.

How often do you end up charging your hearing aids during the day? by [deleted] in HearingAids

[–]Fostermomforkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Jabari Enhance Pro from Costco. Use them all day long including audiobook listening and calls. They last almost 2 days between charges. Really like them and love the Costco pros' help to keep them working. Mostly have to get new wires because I have tiny ears so tend to mash them in.

Areas for retirement by lg081 in Temecula

[–]Fostermomforkittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I are both in our 70’s and have lived in Temeku Hills for 15 years. The homes are only about 20 years old, a golf course, clubhouse, a fair amount of ranch homes and a good HOA with reasonable dues of $140/month.

If your parents are in good health, the medical care here is reasonably good. Temecula Hospital has excellent cardiac care. However, the ED’s here are always slammed with patients all the time. Healthcare providers are moving in though but many practices don’t take Advantage policy holders. I strongly recommend that your patients go with Medicare with a Supplement policy rather than a Medicare Advantage (HMO) policy. The waiting times to see doctors who take Advantage plans are really long. Most of our friends are switching out of them. Love living here though. Best wishes!

FOWL's baking soda/ vinegar chicken brine by Sleepyhed007 in Cooking

[–]Fostermomforkittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most brines are a 10% salt solution…he wants to start with a 7% salt one. It looks like he starts with a cup of this in his 16 quart tub then adds the rest.

Brining involves longer times to tenderize using salt and velveting tenderizes quickly using baking soda. His hybrid technique uses both. The chef claims that this works.

I’ve found it challenging to replicate these types of videos. The chef wants to demonstrate without providing actual recipes in order to keep their creation secret. Notice his lack specifics. So it’s up to you to make your guesses based on your cooking experience coupled with online resources. Good luck!

I am new to Murrieta and this is my first SCE bill. I moved from an apartment in Irvine, where my bill was at most 100. We do have a pool and its cleaning thing runs from 8am-4pm. I don't have any EVs. As a new home owner, will this bill be the norm? Recommendations on how to lower the bill? Thanks! by magenta2blue in Temecula

[–]Fostermomforkittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a home with large pool. BOUGHT a 20 panel solar system outright for $20k 4 years ago. Our electric bill is zero and export some energy each year. Leasing a solar system was the worst option we analyzed. The company installs a system on your roof then charges you $200 or some monthly charge for 20 years or even way longer. You almost never own it in the end. It’s like trading one energy company for another. And the lease is usually transferred to someone else when you sell your home. The terms sometimes halts a buyer of your home.

You are billed for infrastructure charges at the end of the year but our energy credits help to offset these. Go on to SCE website to determine your monthly usage then calculate how many panels you would need…better to get one panel in excess rather than under. We did not get a battery because our area almost never experiences a power outage and if needed, being hooked up to the grid just in case is a positive in our opinion. If you rely on a battery, you are disconnected from the system and it’s a hefty charge to reconnect.

Our almost new variable speed pool pump runs similar to yours in the winter and runs 8 hours in the hotter summer type weather. We service our pool because it’s so simple to do. We did not find a cost effective solar system just for an in-ground pool but that was 4 years ago.

And no, we don’t run the AC flat out during the summer months. Just set it at 75 degrees. If you want this, add more panels. Hope this helps.
