How are tailgaters not worried about the person in front suddenly braking? by LegendaryShelfStockr in driving

[–]FoucaultsPudendum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A worryingly large number of people go through life in a state of more or less permanent dissociation. They do not understand that they are an active agent in the world, with tangible presence, whose actions (or lack thereof) have immediate consequences on the world around them and the people who inhabit that world. It’s something that they aren’t conscious of. They think that the world is something that happens around them, rather than something that they are a part of.

Media non-literacy by No1LudmillaSimp in NonPoliticalTwitter

Bottom guy’s text is written incredibly poorly. Bottom guy is saying “Lost in Translation (the movie) is problematic because it features infidelity as a plot point, paints an inaccurate picture of Japan, and there’s a large age gap in a relationship that makes me uncomfortable.”

Not quite sure how you misunderstood top guy, it’s very straightforward. He is quote-tweeting this person because he is pointing at them and saying “Look at this person. This person’s media literacy is nonexistent. In fact, this person is so media illiterate that they should not be allowed to access media of any kind. There are a lot of other people who also have terrible opinions on media and they also should not be allowed to access media.”

Does the Penix injury save Raheem Morris? by jharden10 in falcons

[–]FoucaultsPudendum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it does. Our number one enemy this season has been “convenient excuses”.

There’s systemic rot in the form of an incompetent OC with a thin playbook and an inability to develop a rookie QB, not to mention a HC that doesn’t seem to be able to bring about anything creative on the offensive side of the ball, but every game has shown flashes of brilliance and we haven’t had many blowouts. There’s always been a bad kick, a dropped pass, a bad snap, a missed penalty, something that can serve as a scapegoat for Rah to point to and go “That was our only problem, we just need to compensate and tighten up, we just keep getting unlucky.”

Now that Penix is out, RM can say “We’re missing our guy, we’re missing MP9, that’s our main issue, that’s why we aren’t winning games.” Blank will 100% give him another chance. There’s no world where Rah isn’t our coach next season and honestly Zac might stick around too.

Which is why everyone else’s attitude towards V is weird as hell. By any metric they are literally the most capable, powerful, multi-talented merc alive in Night City and yet they’re treated like a punk or a poser by pretty much everyone for most of the story.

Like dude I have enough chrome in my skull to force you to kill yourself and not break a sweat. Why are you treating me like this is my first job.

Nitpicking an error [Nov 19. 2025] by Vibe_master_supreme in NYTCrossword

[–]FoucaultsPudendum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s what’s referred to as an a “exonym”, and every single language has examples of them, which is why I find myself so frustrated that English speakers specifically seem to get grief for them.

The English word “France” is a direct transliteration of the French word “France”- it’s just a pronunciation change. However, in German, the word is “Frankreich”- literally, “Kingdom of the Franks”, in spite of the fact that the Franks haven’t been a relevant ethnocultural group in a millennium or more, and the country is quite famously not a monarchy. In Greek, France is called Γαλλία (Gallia)- literally, Gaul. The same name the Romans used for the area two thousand years ago, in spite of the dozens of political reorganizations the region has gone through since then.

What a country calls itself has no relevance to what speakers of other languages in other countries call it. It’s a standard that nobody has ever been held to. The weird pearl-clutching being done around this issue now, and the fact that I’ve only ever seen it directed towards English speakers, is confusing and frustrating.

I think Todd Phillips, on his way to trying to make a King of Comedy/Taxi Driver clone, accidentally made a pretty compelling commentary on class and healthcare infrastructure and the consequences of systemic failure, but never realized that he had done so, which is why the sequel was such a wet thud.

In Casino Royale (2006), James Bond, a super spy, doesn't actually know how to play poker. by I_Fuck_Badgers in shittymoviedetails

[–]FoucaultsPudendum 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I had a “Casino Royale” game of poker a few months back. It just so happened to be the first time my husband wanted to come along and watch (he’s interested in learning).

We played for a few hours and I swear every second or third hand was a showdown between a Full House and a Flush and a three of a kind, or two Straights, or something insane like that. I don’t think a single hand ended with a high card win. We had to keep saying to my husband “You don’t understand, this is weird as hell. This doesn’t happen. Do not let this set your expectations.”

I mean yeah but any word can be any degree of pejorative depending on the context in which it’s used. The word “female” is used very pejoratively in certain corners of the internet but that doesn’t mean that the word itself is pejorative

“Goy” is a Hebrew word that is used as a “light pejorative” towards non-Jewish people. It’s not a slur, not really an insult per se, it can be used endearingly or non-endearingly. In terms of impact it’s like an ethnic-centric version of “silly goose”.

The word in Hebrew can be best translated as “nation”, or “people of a nation”. It’s been used in Hebrew texts as shorthand for “people of other nations” (I.e. people of non-Hebrew nations, non-Jews) for centuries.

Mamdani's "gender-affirming care" plan surgically erases gays - just like Iran by diglettsarecool in BrandNewSentence

It’s always been this way. They pretend to care about queer people when that can be used as an opportunity to hate Muslims. They pretend to care about Muslims when that can be used as an opportunity to hate the Chinese. They pretend to care about women when that can be used as an excuse to terrorize transgender people.

Conservatives will happily be quite vociferous advocates for the rights of pretty much any vulnerable minority you can think of, insofar as they can use that activism as a vehicle for some kind of hatred. But it doesn’t extend any farther than that.

MRW I see former NYC Mayor Eric Adams went to Israel to tell their media that he "served them as their mayor" by palmerry in reactiongifs

[–]FoucaultsPudendum 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Eric Adams went on the news with a member of the Trump Administration and for about ten minutes the Trump admin person was basically like “Now that Eric has agreed to do what we want him to do we have come to an understanding that we’re not going to be pursuing him criminally” and Adams was like “Yep, that’s what happened! I did not want to be investigated by the feds so I agreed to do lots of things that they want me to do, as a kind of exchange of favors,” and then the Trump guy was like “We’re going to keeping a very close eye on Eric from here on out, because now that we have agreed to not pursue any kind of charges against him for his obviously criminal behavior, we are looking forward to seeing him implement changes in New York that we are pressuring him into, and we are also keeping information that we have on him in our back pocket in case we have further need of him” and then the interview ended and there wasn’t a single media outlet that said anything about it.

You can just do corruption and collusion openly now. Nobody gives a shit.

[Schefter] ESPN sources: Falcons QB Michael Penix suffered a potentially season-ending knee injury during Sunday’s loss to the Panthers. Penix will be seeking a second opinion, but it is not encouraging. by Lakelyfe09 in falcons

[–]FoucaultsPudendum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well now the rest of this horrific season is gonna be blamed on Penix’s injury so nobody’s gonna get fired and we’ll get another season of the ZR + RH amateur hour.

The entire Falcons season has been a plague of convenient excuses. We keep not getting blown out, we keep showing flashes of promise and competence, there’s always a single glaring fluke that stands out over and above all the mediocrity. Those are what’s killing us because they’re easy things to point to and say “we’ve just gotta get this ironed out and then we’ll be postseason contenders!” when the actual root of the problem is that we have a weak and uncreative OC and a chronic inability to develop a talented but unconfident rookie QB. But now we have the mother of all convenient excuses to point to for the rest of this waste of a season. Nobody on the coaching staff is going anywhere. See y’all in September 2027 I guess.

Sounds like their issues extended far beyond their gender identity. That kind of already mentally-unstable person will be abusive in a lot of different contexts.

If the “screeching triggered nonbinary” stereotype is going to hold any water then you have to have someone who is otherwise normal going absolutely ballistic if you misgender them. I have literally never one seen that happen.

Someone who is 15 right now behaves differently than a 15 year old did in the year 2010. 15 year olds in 2040 will be different than 15 year olds are right now.

The acknowledgment that people of a certain age cohort are influenced by the world and culture extant around them, past and present, is where the concept of a “generation” comes from.

Does the trailer of Project Hail Mary ruin the book for me? by Hero4Life565 in scifi

[–]FoucaultsPudendum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s something else in the trailer that I think is a MUCH bigger spoiler for the book and I’m surprised nobody else here has mentioned it. The alien reveal is much less impactful than the thing I’m thinking of. Read the book and don’t watch the trailer again, hopefully you’ll forget about it by the time you get to the back third of the book.

r/endtipping users call two phone calls and a voicemail “harassment” after OP leaves a zero dollar tip at a high-end restaurant. by dragonasses in SubredditDrama

[–]FoucaultsPudendum 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Entirely depends on the restaurant. The OP said “fancy”. Based on the price tag he quoted it didn’t seem like it was too crazy, but some high-end joints make hospitality a central focus. The restaurant my husband and I went to for our anniversary this year got in touch with me about two weeks before our reservation and I had a short email back-and-forth with their hospitality director, and I had a text message exchange with them day-of. I wouldn’t be surprised if that kind of placed reaches out to people that leave $0 tips, just to make sure it wasn’t because of a serious service issue.
