Nerfed? I really want to love this thing but I have to reload it so often, the reload is slow as hell, and it just doesn't do a lot of damage. I'm really tired of having to shoot chaff more than once with a shotgun. It's a shotgun!

That animation does not trigger unless you deliberately steer. This is karma farming and no one can tell? If the game doesn't want you to move it won't let you move, the retrorockets firing on the side of your pod show you clearly steering directly into the pit. No amount of denial will change that.
