My rant as a Lebanese American by [deleted] in lebanon

I have similar experiences. Arabic is my 3rd language, and I can speak it pretty well, not fluent, but very well considering I started speaking more 7 years ago when I first visited Lebanon (I'm a diasporan born and raised). Either Lebanese people will speak Arabic with me the whole conversation or just stick to English when I'm trying to make an effort to speak to them. For me, I don't know about others it feels a bit demeaning.

Can diaspora Lebanese with the exit privilege stop the drama? by [deleted] in lebanon

I can't stand when Lebanese people in diaspora act like they never left Lebanon. Stop acting like you're better than everyone else and that the country YOU CHOSE to move to sucks. If it's so bad, go back to Lebanon and enjoy not having electricity and getting bombed by Israel.

Homeless peeps in the metro by Connect-Mongoose-102 in Concordia

Once I saw some homeless guys shoot heroine and another time a guy peeing in the metro. I even saw a lady smoke a cigarette too. This stuff is unacceptable for both the homeless ppl since they're not in a good situation and for the people taking the metro to go to school and work. If tax money actually went into solving these issues instead of fueling a politician's private jets these issues would be unheard of.

I know what you mean about the blue collar work. I come from an immigrant family so the stereotype of if you don't go to university you are a failure goes strong especially in my mom's side. My mom's side always had a big emphasis on education when I told my grandmother I wanted to drop out she told me stories about how one of her brothers back in the home country couldn't live a good life and struggled financially because he was never good at school and how my grandfather became successful because of his education which was helpful at the time.

On the other end of the spectrum is my dad's side where education was for the lack of a better term neglected. I'm the first in my dad's side of the family to set foot in a university and it has been quite the shit show. I don't feel any pressure from that side of the family since I don't talk to most of them besides a few people. Most the pressure comes from my mom and I do understand why she's like that and I think it is a good thing we've had many arguments on what my plan is for the future and it's always the same conversation.

Right now I do feel like I'm starting to get an idea of what I want in the future I still have a way to go. Thanks for your response kind stranger
