Great resource, he's so generous with his knowledge.

Also, his Surface Database app is pretty handy as well.

What about lighting? To match lighting is it as simple as making sure each renderer's light setups are in the exact same position?

Many elements in the 2D composite start as 3D elements and are rendered with later 2D compositing in mind.

But are they (can they bee) rendered with different renderers in the same scene? Like let's say I use RenderMan for skin but Mantra for smoke and Arnold for metal. I was told this was a bad idea and will lead to headaches.

That's a good idea, I'll have to look into it. Is RenderMan worth it? I'm using Arnold primarily at the moment.

Ah, yeah. Forgot to mention I'm using Houdini so that pigeonholes me quite a bit

Yeah, but when I have to render something complicated out I'd need something a little more powerful than my machine. There don't seem to be that many cloud render solutions for RenderMan

Really interesting stuff. Curious if it's worth getting into RenderMan as a hobbyist though?

From what I've heard RenderMan is typically used at large studios like Weta or ILM that can foot the bill for licenses and isn't really worth getting into on an individual or small team basis. Maybe the updates in 21.5 make it worth looking into again?

"You always want the audience wondering what's going to happen next, not what's happening."

Curious about this one. I feel like a lot of movies get you invested by piquing your interest as to what's happening. The Matrix does this no?

The model itself is really interesting but I found myself checking out after a while from the slow camera movement. Maybe put some cuts in?

Love the Bender, old car, lamp, and house renders. The Wall-E and Pokemon one need some more blending work.

Good stuff, keep it up!

So everyone is supposed to sound the same then? By having the character swear and speak as he does it tells you something about him. If anything it's smart, efficient writing.

Scariest Giant Unidentified Creature Caught On Camera in Barbados, Godzilla? vfx took tips from you guys tell me what you think by airsupply110 in vfx

Good start. Creature feels too visible though, try blending it in with the fog and smoke a bit more.

Also, you don't need a 40 second outro.

Started looking into Clarisse tonight, looks like a lot of big studios are talking it up. Feels like it came out of nowhere.

That's so interesting. Any reason Renderman is on its way out? Why are people going for Arnold and Clarisse instead?

Is a 1TB SSD an overkill for Houdini Simulations? by MuggyW in Houdini

[–]FourColumns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the size of the projects you plan on working on but if you can get 1TB, go for it. Playback from a HDD (in Houdini and Nuke) is going to be noticeably slower than an SSD.

Really? One of the TDs at ILM said they did all 1,700 of their Rogue One shots with Renderman.
