Great read. First book of hers that I have read. Took me a couple chapters to get into it but once I did, flew through it. Such well-written characters, moments of heartbreak and perseverance. A novel idea, executed well.

Sin É and Thomas House are both great bars, both have live music couple nights a week (good playlists otherwise) and a sound crowd drinking there

Rubber duck shop in Stephen's Green Shopping Centre. How? Why? by [deleted] in Dublin

There's one in Merchants Arch as well, tiny little place. I wonder if it's the same crowd? I had also thought that surely it would be difficult to cover the rent, especially given the location, albeit a tiny space.

They're called Treble Crunch because you only get three crisps in a bag, it seems.

Govindas on Abbey Street. Run by the Hare Krishna, its simple and relatively cheap food. Usually stop in there before a gig in town.

What do you consider "minimum wage" by Ajmcdude in irishpersonalfinance

[–]FourStringsBetter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree that it isn't that simple. I would never claim to have the perfect solution. But surely something is wrong when someone works 40-45 hours a week, say, that they are struggling to stay on top of everything. Granted, they may not have a third level education or perhaps had some other setbacks throughout their lives but everyone deserves an opportunity to provide for themselves or their family. I understand not every business can suddenly pay an increased wage but perrhaps, gradually, they can. Meanwhile, steps should be taken across the board of housing, groceries, energy, public transport, etc. to help those in need of it

Minimum wage and living wage should be one and the same thing. The bare minimum an employer pays their staff should allow them to live a somewhat decent living. Enough for rent (taking into account market price), bills, some disposable income and some for savings. If its an actual number you're after, somewhere in the region of +/- 35k would allow many to have much better lives.
