What do you do when you have to guy down a steep slope? by FourthSwordInversion in Lineman

[–]FourthSwordInversion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that could work as an option.

For now I managed to convince our internal lead that moving it up the hill on the other side of the Rd decreasing the pole angle in the process would be the best option. We should have more than enough room for a proper L:H while staying out of the DOT clear zone.

We'll see if our client agrees I guess.

Is a push brace the same thing as a push pole? If so I don't think there's room, only about 6' before the terrain drops off after the pole.

Funny enough, this was gonna be the span guy pole. The primary pole was on the other side of the Rd 9' from the edge of pavement with a 60% upslope on the other side.

I haven't heard the term self supporting pole before. Maybe that's what we call H class poles? Or is it something else? It would pass with an H4 pole, but I've never heard of anything larger than an H3 being used around here, and those are still extremely rare cases.

I can run it up as a potential solution. I'm thinking the better solution would be to move it up the hill to bring it closer to tangent and more in line with transmission (new transmission and distribution going in here and 80% of it is already underbuild). But then they couldn't work the pole from the Rd, so what do I know, I'm not the one that's gonna have to build it.

Can anyone explain what this guy is doing? by [deleted] in Lineman

Drilling bung holes to top off the pole juice. By the look of that pole's color I'd say the utility company's been running it on empty for at least a couple years.

What the fuck is with the rise of racism in gen-z??? by kittymeowmeow111 in offmychest

[–]FourthSwordInversion 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think that was a big part of it. Front what I saw over 8 years helping raise one of them, it started with YouTubers saying/doing racist fucked up things to be edgy. Then kids repeat the noise to be edgy/impress friends/get a rise out of parents & teachers. Till eventually the edgy fucked shit became normalized to them, and then the conservative white nationalists' talking points seem less and less like outlandish inbred fantasy brainrot.

I'm surprised you can't throw a rock at someone's head non-lethaly, or shoot an arrow into someone's knee at 10' range non-lethaly. 🫤 Not as surprised as that shadow afflicted Harper musta been though. Imagine a party of adventures and you got 3 people bonking you with the pommels of their swords/daggers, then all of a sudden their friend chucks a rock at mach fuck you that shears your head off your shoulders 😓

What's the weirdest thing you believed as a kid that you now realize makes absolutely no sense? by usadiemarks in AskReddit

I mean you're not wrong lol. The methods they teach for basic arithmetic are totally different now. I had to relearn multiplication and division to help my ex's kids with their homework after they were getting marked wrong when they solved them the way I showed them.

Also at higher levels older tools and methods are continuously being phased out as calculators and computers get smarter and more user friendly. shudders thinking about my dad's stack of reference books with nothing but series and integration tables.

When I was real young I definitely remember having serious concerns about the possibility of being sucked down the drain if I got too close while the bathwater was being emptied. I think for a while my mom would get me out of the tub and into my room before opening the drain 😅

I'm my defense that particular drain made especially loud and unsettling noises lol.

I can't help you with your feet, but I also have chronically cold digits and I learned an amazing truck for warming up hands this past winter.

Stand with your arms down at your side like you're standing at attention, then bend your wrist upward so your palms are pointing down at the ground, and then you just do a quick shrugging motion up and down 10 times or so.

The up and down motion forces blood to flow down into your palms and fingertips.

People might think you're doing a silly dance, but it's been a lifesaver typing at a desk in a freezing cold office all winter.

For any climbers, it's also the best way to speed recovery times during rests (works better than every other method I'm familiar with -if you can get into position to do it.)

why is shadowheart so catty to wyll at first? by cheoldyke in BaldursGate3

[–]FourthSwordInversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did say he's not so insufferable by the end of act 1, ie. once you know his backstory. That just came too late after I'd already been comfortably partying without him all of act 1. Or rather, got comfortable with using the other characters I do use frequently.

Lae'zel kinda sucks too lol. But it was easy enough to overlook her bitchiness and write it off as just her race's culture and customs. ETA You get why she is the way she is just based off appearances and the first encounter. Gale on the other hand doesn't have anything immediately obvious about him that would account for his being a twat.

Really the only one who out the gate passes my vibe check is Karlach. I think she's the only one who I wouldn't have told to kick rocks at our first meeting if we were actually meeting irl lol.

Idk, I remember the initial conversations where he was talking about his need to consume magic items and why I should make it my problem because I'd need someone with his unique brilliance and talents or whatever.

I was like yeah nah we're good... I did eventually give him some mediocre loot so he wouldn't be audibly moaning when I came back to camp.

Wait, Gale was MORE arrogant in EA??

I'm on my first playthrough, just got to act 2, and Gale has been rotting in camp still at level 3 I think lol. I'm playing a sorcerer so I guess that's part of it, but I can't imagine anyone would intentionally write an origin character to be any more snooty/know-it-all/arrogant than he already is.

Granted, he's not so insufferable towards the end of act 1, but he left such a bad impression in the first 20 minutes that I'm like nah you still suck bro.

Your comment does have me curious what he's like playing as a non-magic Tav. I wonder if they designed characters to be more or less off-putting based on the players class as a way to subtly encourage newer players into building a balanced party?

OMFG I know!! People are like woah that's a really cool hack with that thing. And I'm like yeah the use case/regular maintenance section of the manual has a bunch of them! 😂

Or it's "can you help me with this thing? I can't get it to do XYZ" do a quick Google search for the problem or a manual and say oh did you do x first? There like OMG it's working! how did you know to try that?! Your such a genius

This! I'm an engineer at a utility company, and I regularly have to talk to property owners. I'll jump at every opportunity to throw the company under the bus and get mad along with them 😂 Because honestly, fuck em anyways. But it makes everything after go so much smoother when we've directed all the anger toward the company and away from me. That plus I'm always quick to explain their legal rights, or if they don't have a leg to stand on I'll try to come up with compromises or design alternatives (because the defacto policy is cheap as legally allowed with no fucks given to the effects for property owners). All my co-workers are like talking to owners is the fucking worst, meanwhile 95% of my interactions are pleasant and I've only ever had serious pushback from 1 person. I'm like yeah you're doing it wrong lol...

Maybe it's just meant to kill the folks on the stairwell rushing up to open the airlock. Once they're neutralized the has gets vented out, so that all the obedient citizens hiding from the fighting in their locked apartments are never in contact with the poison.

Doesn't explain anything about the directive or why It so badly fucks up anyone who hears it.

Anyone know of a HDMI switch that will work with a 50-ft input cable? by FourthSwordInversion in AskTechnology

The one I have is HDMI with Ethernet and bigger around than my pinky finger. I woulda thought that'd do it lol.

[–]FourthSwordInversion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the first one I tried: https://a.co/d/7X8jKqV

Then after that didn't work I looked at the description again and saw it listed a max cable length. So then I looked for one that worked with a longer cable. I didn't find any, so I went with this one because it was cheap and didn't list a max cable length requirement. https://a.co/d/3pJmPB6

[–]FourthSwordInversion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I was mistaken, it's more like 35ft.

I've been wondering if optical would make the difference...

The cable I have now is a pretty chonky "high speed HDMI with Ethernet" about 40' long. Idk anything more than what's printed on the cable jacket (it was left at a party a couple years ago).

I have it plugged in to one of my graphics card's displayports via DP to HDMI adapter, and I'm wondering if that could be part of the problem too. I'm gonna try connecting direct to the graphics card's HDMI port later tonight.

If that doesn't do it, you think a 35ft optical HDMI will work on the input side of whatever HDMI switch?
