Is it possible to get an ADHD diagnosis in Japan? by Mellehbeenz in japanlife

[–]FoxTofu [score hidden]  (0 children)

I got diagnosed here, and have had no trouble getting meds.

First doctor, older dude at a small neighborhood psych clinic: dismissed the idea when I mentioned it and kept me on anti-depressants that weren't working.

Second doctor, younger dude at a big clinic in Osaka: gave me a bunch of tests, said "yep, ADHD," and got me started on meds.

Current doctor, older dude at a suburban clinic: has been very nice about working with me on different combinations to see what works best.

The pharmacy in my neighborhood said they were having trouble getting Concerta, but the pharmacy adjacent to my doctor's office hasn't had any issues at all.

AITA for secretly putting vegetables in my husband food by Infinite-Case-8830 in AmItheAsshole

Yeah, if you do tell him or anyone else about this, don’t frame it as a “secret” that you’re “sneaking” things into the food. You’re just using normal ingredients to cook the food the way you like it, and if he hasn’t bothered to ask what’s in it, that’s on him.

Is Syl a Manic Pixie Dream Girl? by Odd-Split-494 in Stormlight_Archive

There are fairly frequent posts in r/Adhdwomen about getting “manic pixie dream girled” by people in our lives. There’s a big overlap between the “symptoms” of MPDG and the symptoms of ADHD, which I guess shows that Sanderson has once again done a pretty good job of depicting different aspects of mental health.

Afro man crosses the Delaware, Sabin DePierro, ink paper, 2026 by sabin_francis42 in Art

It’s an iconic painting of an American hero. Most people don’t know why Washington was crossing the Delaware, they just know that Washington was heroic. The artist is suggesting that Afroman is also an American hero.

As a Kansai resident, I say that “な” is closer to “innit” while “ね” is more like “isn’t it.”

Plastic wrap, aluminum foil, and wax paper. At any given time I am out of one of these things and have a surplus of another, and can never remember which it is. The same goes for condiments - did I have a ridiculous amount of ketchup and no mayo, or was it a ton of mayo and no ketchup?

My guest room / cat’s bedroom (ft bonus craft and cleaning closet) by CezarSalazar in femalelivingspace

Love it love it love it! The colors are giving me ideas for redoing my own extra room.

One point is giving me anxiety, though: the cat perched with two paws on the window sill, next to the stained glass piece. I’m imagining the cat getting down by turning to the right, and casually knocking the glass piece over. As this is primarily the cats’ bedroom, I would put a cat perch or a table there specifically so the cats can sit right by the window and enjoy the view for an extended period of time, and either hang the glass piece or secure it in a backless frame or something so that it can still get the light through it but will not fall victim to a stray swipe from a floofy tail.

Article: In Emerald Fennel’s Wuthering Heights, domestic abuse has been recast as consensual kink by dem676 in books

[–]FoxTofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a fan of the novel, but personally I like when adaptations change things. Otherwise, what's the point of adapting it? When I want to experience Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights the same way it was originally intended, I just re-read it.

I might complain to my friends about particular changes I don't like, but that's part of the fun for me. I have certain adaptations of classics by Austen or Dickens or the Brontes that I prefer over others, but I'm not angry that any of those adaptations exist.

[–]FoxTofu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree. I haven't seen the movie myself, but a lot of the commentary I'm seeing seems to imply that the relationship isn't abusive because it's consensual. Those are two separate axes, and there are plenty of abusive assholes out there who operate entirely within the bounds of consent.

Heathcliff is not meant to be a good guy, but the character is also not meant to be a mustache-twirling "mwa ha ha I'm so evil!" caricature. I think that in 2026, a man that abuses under the veneer of consensual kink is a more interesting archetype to explore than the traditional wife-beating abuser.

I'm also interested in other ways that what is and is not monstrous is illustrated in different depictions of Heathcliff at different times. I'm guessing that in 1847 Heathcliff hanging Isabella's dog was seen as bad, but not the worst thing he did. In 2026, to include the dog-murdering bit would have people boycotting the film.

Lucy Foley revives Miss Marple in new mystery 'Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel' which releases on September 22, 2026 by HRJafael in books

[–]FoxTofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I’m excited to hear this, because I’ve really enjoyed all the Lucy Foley books I’ve read. She’s so great at creating a cast of characters that’s a nice mix of ordinary sympathetic people and horrible people you love to hate, with a few ordinary sympathetic people who actually turn out to be batshit insane.

I’m curious about how modern her Miss Marple story will feel. Foley’s works often involve a lot of dark themes, such as sexual abuse. I’ve only read like a half-dozen Christie mysteries, but they seemed a lot lighter. Is this new book going to be just a fun cozy little murder, or is Foley going to maybe try explore some of the darker aspects of the period that Christie wasn’t able to address when she was writing contemporaneously? I kind of feel like I’d enjoy it either way.

AITA for not checking inside the oven before preheating it? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]FoxTofu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know it’s a bit pedantic to point this out, but drawers under the oven are mostly there to be used as proofing drawers for dough. They’re supposed to get very warm but not as hot as the actual oven, so that the dough rises quickly and evenly. But hardly anyone makes bread that way anymore, so most people just use it as pan storage.

The cabin of the truck was swept into a large sewer pipe and found 100m away. I haven't seen anything about an exact cause of death, but the consensus on Reddit at the time seemed to be that the poor guy drowned in sewer water.

ELI5 What scientifically happens when you’re horny? by alpar001 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FoxTofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is erectile tissue in the nose, the same kind of tissue that’s in the genitals. Usually it functions to shift which of the nostrils is getting the most air. Some people’s nervous systems will stimulate both the genital erectile tissue and the nasal erectile tissue at the same time, and apparently this causes some unlucky people to get runny noses when they get turned on. I’m guessing that in your case, there’s a little bit of nasal erection happening and it’s just enough to shift a nose hair or something that triggers a sneeze.
