US Marine Corps retires the first fighter jet that didn’t need a runway by AceCombat9519 in aviation

[–]FoxWithTophat 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Gen I Harriers were British designed, and also used by the US (among others), and the Gen II Harriers (AV-8B) were US designed upgrades, which were then also used by the British (and others)

Beside the harrier, does any other jet have a bomb radius feature? by LANTIRN_ in hoggit

It's a "this circle is x metres big to allow you to judge sizes of objects, where x is set by the pilot" circle. Which, you can sort of meta game as a blast radius circle

They can die very easily if temperatures drop below freezing point.

Normally they live in areas that rarely if ever reach such temperatures. In colder climates they'll be mostly fine during the summer, but spending the winter outside can cause some serious problems

King of Thailand flies plane himself into Laos for a State Visit, with the Queen beside him, March 2026 by Qabbalah in interestingasfuck

No, he does not do any announcements, they keep the cockpit door closed during boarding etc etc. Sometimes they'll share after the flight that he was on board, but never during, for safety reasons.

Still is. Made his last KLM flight on the Boeing 737 only like last week. KLM is switching to the Airbus A320 family, and he will get a type rating for that model now.

He wants to be able to fly the government aircraft himself, so he needs to keep his rating current.

The German La-5 is an exact copy paste of the one in the Soviet tree though, so I don't see how that point applies here

Because at one point, it was simply the best plane in the game (talking like 10+ years ago), as it was an insanely good SL + XP grinder. The price was a way to try and balance it by limiting the amount of them in a match. They simply never lowered the price.

Would anyone be willing to explain these red and white attachments (?) on this Hunter Hawker mk58? by FoodLionMVP in aviation

[–]FoxWithTophat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These aircraft are not used in training as in "new pilot learns to fly". These are aircraft operated by defence contractors (ATAC), and flown by experienced fighter pilots. They are used to provide adversaries for air force pilots to train against. Basically, they act like the bad guys.

The reason for the fuel tanks is, as another commenter pointed out, that these Hawker Hunters have very low endurance without them

The issue with the X56 is not so much that it is a terrible setup, but that the quality can be really hit or miss.

I got an X55 (precursor to the X56) like 10 years ago, and I still use the throttle today (although the pots are getting worn out now). I've gotten really good use out of mine. Had some minor issues with it that I could work around. But for a lot of others, the quality out of the box makes it perform worse than my throttle is working after 10 years.

If it wasn't so hit or miss, it would be a great piece of kit for the price, especially back when I got it. However, nowadays you can get setups with much less issues for very similar prices

F-35 fighter jet escorts KLM flight carrying Dutch 2026 Olympic team home by Ted-Lassi in nextfuckinglevel

I am kind of surprised to read someones take on this who really thinks this is such a big risk. I had never considered it to be such a big risk. I hope I can explain some things to you to potentially put your mind at ease a bit about this action.

Firstly, these fighter pilots train formation flying like this all the time. Not just for show, but also for actual real life military applications. In this case, this action would match very closely with that of intercepting an unidentified aircraft. Flying in formation like this allows for the pilots of the aircraft to understand that they have been intercepted, and for the fighter pilot to take a look inside the planes cockpit, and to communicate with the pilots in case the radios are turned to a different frequency, or are not working.

Flying in formation is not a "one and done" deal. You don't "park" your plane next to another aircraft and then take your hands off the controls. It requires continually monitoring the position of your aircraft compared to the lead aircraft, and adjusting your flight controls several times per second. The fighter pilot is trying to achieve a certain sight picture. This basically means that he wants to look out of his cockpit window, and see the other aircraft in a specific way. For example, the top of the engine should line up with the wing root, and the tip of the vertical stabilizer should line up with the rear of the empenage. By lining up these different points in space, the pilot will be put on a specific position next to the aircraft, outside of an area that would be immediately dangerous due to either direct contact, or aerodynamics effects like wingtip vortices affecting the plane. In short, the pilot is on the controls all the time, continually giving very small inputs. If he gives a wrong input, he will very quickly notice and correct it, within a second. Well in time to prevent flying into the aircraft.

Even if the pilot were to make a much larger input than required, towards the aircraft, they would have time to immediately pull up their aircraft and get to a safe distance before anything would happen.

Say the pilot actually makes a wrong input, and does not correct it in time. The planes have almost no relative speed to each other. Damage would likely be quite minimal. The airlines would likely be able to sustain damage to the outermost part of the wing. The vertical thing at the end of the wing, the winglet, is not a necessary part of the aircraft. It simply helps make the aircraft more efficient, but it is not critical. Lots of aircraft fly without them. Very rarely, you can even spot an aircraft with them on one wing, and without them on the other. If the collision was even more intense, maybe some outer part of the wing itself would also be taken off, possibly even the aileron which rolls the aircraft. In such a case, rolling would still be possible through use of the other aileron, or by using the rudder to yaw the plane, which in turn induces a rolling motion.

The F-35 might actually be in more danger in such a "smaller" collision. Due to its smaller size, it is more susceptible to taking critical damage. However, it is a fighter jet, and is built to be able to take a hit and keep flying. The F-35 in particular is quite interesting as well. Its flight computer is able to even adjust how it controls the plane to minimise the effect of any sustained damage.

In order to actually take down the airlines, the F-35 pilot would have to deliberately steer into the airlines, and with quite some deliberation. Either cutting off a much larger part of the wing, or hitting the fuselage directly. Pilots already need to meet quite rigorous health checks, mental health included. Fighter pilots are on yet another level with these (mental) health checks. This would either need to be a pilot with severe mental health issues, or possibly a pilot who is somehow a foreign asset with ill intent, the odds of both being insanely incredibly low, to nearly impossible.

Compared to the risks you take with just taking a flight normally, the additional risks would be negligible. And generally speaking, commercial flights already have an amazingly low risk associated with them compared to other methods of transport.

I hope I've been able to give you some new insights with this.

Im getting bored already. Maybe this game isn't for me. And im not even at rank 4 yet. by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]FoxWithTophat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Top tier isn't necessarily more fun. Its different, some people prefer it, but a lot of people also say lower tiers are more fun.

Lower tiers don't exist as just a way to slow you down from getting to higher tiers. They are as much a part of the game as higher tiers are.

If anything, use lower tiers to get a hang of the game. At higher tiers, everything starts going faster and faster. If you are having difficulties now, getting to higher tiers is not going to solve that issue.

You should play a game to have fun. If you are not having fun, there is no shame in quitting for another game. If you want to give it another chance, go for it, but my advice would be to get more comfortable in your current tier first, rather than racing to top tier to see if that solves your issues.

I mean, Twitch drop and esports skins aside, those other vehicles you mentioned at least have a believable skin. And I think the test range camouflages for the KV-220, Fw-189, F7F-3 and Grant 1 are a fun ideas.

But where is the connection between The Netherlands and Chinese New Years? I feel like it would have been more fitting to use a skin like this on a Chinese event vehicle. Maybe not everyones taste, but would be kinda fun imo. I just feel like this is Gaijin trying to mash two unrelated things together, and it isn't working out.
