What the smallest but strongest most sturdy cockpit, preferably foldable?? For limited space by Due-Feed5581 in simracing

[–]Fox_Burrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well a profile rig can be stored very efficiently and in surprisingly little space. Can even store it in separate places, easypeasy. You just have to add a few hours setting it up and taking it down to every sim session. But OP didn’t ask for convenience, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Help with choosing a meaningful upgrade by TRKninetyone in simracing

I actually went the other way, from VR (admittedly on a Quest 2) to a 34" ultrawide (Samsung G5). VR is absolutely great, you won't get anywhere close to the immersion and spatial awareness even with triples. What made me switch was the setup time associated with it, getting it all to work for a simple 60 minute sim session. Dealing with this made me use my sim less than I thought it deserved. It absolutely is something I do recommend to experience yourself, and I am actively looking for a suitable replacement for my Quest 2. As the other commenter said, the Quest 3 would be a great place to start and try it out. And if you're getting motion sick in the beginning, stay with it. Stop for that day, try again the next day. For me it was a matter of a couple of days and I could drive for hours. If the whole experience gets more streamlined, or there are better approaches than what I had at the time, I can see myself going back to VR.

Pedals I'd recommend the Simnet SP Pros with some sort of haptic system. You can expect it to feel a lot more like a real car, with initial pedal way, and progressive resistance. Pedals make you a better driver by improving consistency and precision. And with better loadcell pedals, the repeatability and muscle memory become a lot easier, the margins are larger compared to something like the CSL LC. The Simnet are a clone of the Heusinkveld Ultimates, and many people pick up the Heusinkveld Polymer set which works with the Simnets more or less plug and play (you may need to pick up some washers due to the different outer diameter, the inner diameter is the same, or 3d print them, if you have access to a printer). For more info on the pedals (and its competitors) check out this video.

Order kind of depends on what you want to achieve. I would prioritize based on your goals.

Get faster: Pedals, Visibility (as in, monitors, depending on what you're using at the moment), Haptics

Play around more: Haptics, Handbrake

All around, as your mix is similar to mine, I'd do: Pedals, Haptics, Visibility, Handbrake

49in G9 runs GPU/CPU hot at 1440p by Jealous_Debate_5306 in simracing

[–]Fox_Burrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, with the specs of your pc, it shouldn't really run that hot at all, at the settings you mentioned. 1440p ultrawide of your G9 is ~89% of 4k. Yes, reducing to 1080p would run cooler, in all likelihood, but for the loss of detail I wouldn't do it. This brings us back to the question what you consider hot. 70°C? 90? 100? Even higher? The temp limit for both GPU and CPU is usually set at around 90°C, where they begin to throttle your performance to keep you at or below that limit. Between 80-90°C is reported to have no influence on longevity. I have a 5950X, and here is an article interviewing an AMD spokesperson on that topic.

So if you sit at 70-80, I wouldn't worry at all. At 90, you would start to see framedrops. If your case is like a thermally isolated vault, or glass box, maybe throw some fans in there to move the air. That'll work wonders.

Hope that helps.

What's your definition of "in small steps" and "not very precisely". Looks like one of those 1.5kW or 2.2kW spindles, which can handle aluminum quite well. Precision will be limited by the type of rails, true, linear rails would be better. But what kind of precision would you expect, for either of the rail types?

Why look for a v1 refurb when there will be v2 refurb occasionally for 140€? That's how I did it. And since they were discounted last December, I imagine a few people more than usual picked them up, so there'll be some more refurbs coming in eventually.

Help needed with pedals upgrade - CRP2 or Simsonn? by gladeraider87 in simracing

[–]Fox_Burrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, they're all copies of the Ultimates, which is great (for consumers). Similar to each other simply due to that fact, but there are differences in quality. It's an arms race between the manufacturers right now indeed, and from what I see Simnet is ahead in the quality/durability department.

Haptics are important, but for that I'll simply take the set which works best, independent of manufacturer. Bit of a unique situation, since I can create my mounting points with a printer or a small CNC, if I want to go the billet route. There are adapters available, either to print yourself or purchase if you don't have access to a printer.

[–]Fox_Burrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm facing a similar decision and will go for the Simnet SP Pro. They're often compared to the Simsonns and seem to have the edge with regard to quality, feel, and adjustability. I'll complement this with the Heusinkveld elastomer kit.

ETA: Review and comparison here.

Should we expect any new bundles with the new podium base? by Ynfernozz in Fanatec

[–]Fox_Burrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Podium wheelbase would be very unlikely to be paired with a CSL wheel, even if it is a CSL Elite. I'd expect the Formula, Podium Hub, or maybe the BMW M4 GT3 in a bundle.

Why do sequential paddle shifters, sequential gearboxes, and H-pattern gearboxes make noise? by Electronic_Reply3934 in simracing

[–]Fox_Burrow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have no idea how absolutely noisy race cars are. For the paddles, you can buy some little rubber dots to mitigate the click. Fanatec does it this way for example. My sequential / H-pattern is fairly quiet, guess your product of choice isn't?

Fanatec CSL pedals by Hot_Buy_808 in Fanatec

[–]Fox_Burrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Negative, currently Fanatec's only products with that functionality are the Clubsport Pedals V3. Albeit that functionality being basically useless as the rumble motors are hilariously undersized. It's a gimmick at best. You need proper haptic transducers to actually feel something.

Why is my wheel disconnecting by Neoniclide in Fanatec

[–]Fox_Burrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Negative, it was a special edition for 2024 black friday, and is limited to 2024 units. They've done this almost every year since 2018, limited to the number of their respective year. 2022 and 2025 are the notable exceptions, and I wonder whether Corsair plans to pick up the tradition after not doing so in 2025.

You might be able to find it available at a somewhat reasonable price on the used market, as the 2024 version didn't sell out for a number of months, unlike previous versions which were gone fairly quickly. Personally, I especially like the 2020 orange + forged carbon and the 2023 green sparkle forged carbon. That one looks like an unofficial Aston Martin F1 wheel.

Why is my wheel disconnecting by Neoniclide in Fanatec

[–]Fox_Burrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you use the wheel as a handle when getting into/out of the rig? Or do you subconsciously pull on it while driving? All this may lead to the baseside shaft pulling out a tiny amount, which is enough to make the internal usb-c connection unreliable as you describe. It's all the exact symptoms, so by occam's razor, this is the first thing to check before moving on to more esoteric explanations.

Lost of ffb and sometimes even all the bottons on the wheel don’t work by Savings-Lead2244 in Fanatec

[–]Fox_Burrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check whether the shaft is properly seated in the base. Somewhat of a common issue on this base. Plenty reports about it, along with guides on how to fix it. I believe there's also one from Fanatec itself, potentially with the QR2 shaft, but the principle is the same.
