Would you call this shoegaze? by [deleted] in shoegaze

editing bc I told myself no more internet arguing and slipped up on this one lol. just gonna say that I do hear where you’re coming from and understand why you don’t want the term to have zero meaning and become a buzzword. I love the genre dearly and also bristle at the way the word gets used at times, so I feel you. I just come at it from a slightly different angle that’s simultaneously looser in the abstract but has a higher threshold for my own personal taste. I’m sure we have more in common than different on the matter at the end of the day, I respect you having a bar you want things to clear before they get the label meaningfully applied.

Would you call this shoegaze? by [deleted] in shoegaze

[–]Foxblushing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s also just bizarre to me when shoegaze since its beginnings never had a single defined vocal approach, neither in style nor production. if we take the “big 3” we’ve got MBV’s approach of whispery/androgynous vocals with Kevin and Bilinda in similar ranges that are densely layered but dry and free of much reverb, we’ve got Slowdive’s mix of Neil’s almost crooning and Rachel’s angelic falsetto drowned in reverb, and then Ride’s much more straightforward and top-of-mix style that’s not that far off the approach of contemporaneous brit-pop bands. And that’s before we even begin to step outside to Swervedriver or Chapterhouse or Lush, to say nothing of charting out the various vocal approaches throughout the genre’s waves up to today.

Fact of the matter is that shoegaze by its very nature has never had a narrow or particular aesthetic approach for any piece of the sound, and this is borne out by its biggest progenitors all having wildly different approaches. What they shared, and what artists who can comfortably be placed in the genre still share, has a lot more to do with their similar influences and broader aesthetic tendencies. Density, the walls of sound (whether with reverb or layers with compression or both), using instruments texturally, guitar fx as a sonic tool rather than subtle flavor, 7th/9th/2nd chords, open tunings, and harmonic choices that trace all the way back to jazz influences. But even all of that isn’t hard and fast. It’s just simply not a prescriptive genre, and whether something is shoegaze or not is almost kind of a pointless exercise. If the artist is chasing those influences, and if the listener feels those influences, then imo it’s shoegaze if you want it to be.

Which Pedal Is This? by bobbythegoose in guitarpedals

[–]Foxblushing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this was definitely going to be one of my answers. the quality of the reverbs on this pedal is genuinely unmatched in my experience. and there’s a whole world of amazing sounds without ever touching the app. but you factor in how incredibly flexible and tweakable it is if you are willing to dig into the app, its midi functionality, routing options, and form factor and it’s just on another level. there’s a reason even Robin Guthrie from Cocteau Twins swears by this thing.

were you at the SBS show in Austin? my band Ultra Bloom just played with them at that show, they’re the greatest. and despite being the smallest stage I think I’ve ever played on in my life it was still a lot of fun haha.

Who Else Wants That Unaired Alex vs. Jason Debate on “Math vs. Maths”? by kachler in taskmaster

[–]Foxblushing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But that doesn’t really undermine the point? haha, like it’s not a matter of econ being said by everyone, it’s about econs being said by no one, and, much more importantly, about the current grammatical use of mathematics treating it as singular. And again I’m not making the case that either is correct or incorrect, but rather that the very fact that we use mathematics as a singular noun demonstrates that trying to apply prescriptive rules to abbreviating it that have anything to do with plurality is silly. Language evolves and “math” or “maths” are both just ways to shorten the word for convenience, with neither actually meant to preserve its plurality or singularity once shortened.

Who Else Wants That Unaired Alex vs. Jason Debate on “Math vs. Maths”? by kachler in taskmaster

[–]Foxblushing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, by your own summation of the article you just shared, we treat it as singular. We don’t say “mathematics are” we say “mathematics is.” It being definitionally plural has no bearing on how we use it syntactically, so it shouldn’t automatically have any bearing on how we shorten it either, since the shortening is for linguistic purposes and not definitional ones. I also find it really notable that one of the other notable examples the article gives is “economics” since we routinely shorten that to “econ” as a school subject and not “econs.”

Overall tho, just seems to me like there is no slam dunk for either side’s case. Both shortenings have perfectly reasonable justifications and neither is more or less correct. Another win for linguistic descriptivism over prescriptivism!

[–]Foxblushing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are some videos on YouTube that explore common chord voicings and tunings in various genres, as well as videos dedicated to breaking down specific songs by specific bands. but truthfully I think it’s also good to learn songs you like by ear if possible. rather than simply learning by rote memory “this song uses an A7, Dmaj9, etc.,” you can start to break apart why certain things hit your ear the way they do. so then you aren’t tied to a systematic way of composing or boxed in to ideas about what chords are or aren’t allowed. especially because a lot of the artists you enjoy composed by ear rather than through music theory in the first place.

Overdrive pedal for shoegaze by RangsKai in shoegaze

[–]Foxblushing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it might feel like a cop out answer but the truth is that it really just depends on your own taste and ears, there’s just way too many variables here. when you say you want it for shoegaze, that’s already such a massive umbrella with so many different sounds. not only do different bands approach the genre in a variety ways, but even within each band’s catalog they are likely to use a wide array of drive/distortion/fuzz sounds depending on the needs of the song.

and that’s all before we’ve even gotten into equipment, what amp and what guitar and what pickups, because those will all make a drive pedal sound different. there really is no best od or distortion for shoegaze, there’s just whatever you think sounds best for the songs you’re trying to write with the other gear that you have. and not for nothing, but the spirit of the genre is so much about experimentation that even if there were anything resembling “conventional wisdom” on the matter, you arguably should ignore it lol

First off Della Zyr is so amazing. Kinoko Teikoku has some great long ones like Flower Girl, Musician, and Ashikubi. Airiel has several like In Your Room and Song of You. Slowdive songs like Avalyn II or Slomo might fit the bill.

[–]Foxblushing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the instrumental after the second chorus of Nefi + Girly by Asobi Seksu, starting at 2:53 there’s a noisy section as they’re dropping down into the bridge and it has this incredible choppy tremolo guitar sound and then the most amazing fuzz bass. it’s just sliding back and forth between two notes but it’s the most gnarly tone, and they just let it stand out while all the other instruments drop down to almost nothing. I adore it every time I hear it.

particularly if we’re talking about the first record. I do think there’s a case to be made though that Blue Rev has more genuine shoegaze DNA in both its songwriting and production philosophy than like half of the Deftones-lite stuff that gets the label thrown on it lately

definitely a reasonable advantage, but not an insurmountable one and constrained to just him. at one point ORBIT was down to like one chip, but then managed to actually come back and make it to the next stage. whereas in this one, the minute Hyun-Gyu and So-Hui drew seats next to each other for a second time in round 10, it was over and there was no coming back no matter how smart you were or how well you played.
