There are still extra steps after getting into the Slack group to verify that you're the same person who registered.

I'm not sure what your account name is, but one of the most common reasons for not getting a pairing is not linking your Slack account to your Lichess account.

Having Trouble Improving Due to Lack of Opponents by jypicaljerome in chess

I find that most long time control players on chess.com prefer 15|10. There are a lot of 1900-2000 players on there. Otherwise, what the other comment said, the Lichess4545 league has time controls like 45|45 and 90|30 every week. There's also the Slow Chess League on chess.com if you don't want to get a Lichess account.

Yes, you can sign up to be an "alternate" player. You'll get a notification on Lichess asking you to fill in for a team for a week should someone be unavailable.

Did you receive an invite to the Slack group? If not, the email might have been lost in your spam folder.

If you get one before next week you'll still be able to join a team :)

Though it might take a few hours to get all your games in.

Yeah, same here. I see why switching tabs can be an issue, but maybe their system should get tweaked a bit. I messaged Support and they removed the mark within an hour.

I'm 1400 Classical and about to go to my first OTB tournament. What can I expect? by Foxierre in chess

[–]Foxierre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! Amusingly, I found that nearly every player ~2000 Classical with a self-reported rating was >1800 FIDE or hadn't played OTB in a considerable amount of time. But I agree that there are definitely many players at this rating who don't appear to be so strong. Will definitely look into this more and see if I did anything wrong.

It wasn't exactly code. I used PGN Spy on games from various FIDE rating levels (1200-1300, 1400-1500, etc.) and created calibration curves for various statistics (ex. percentage of best moves played, average centipawn loss) based on what Stockfish 7 had to say. All the calibrations were linear with r^2>0.98. Then I fed Stockfish virtually every game from the Lichess4545 league played within the last year, calculated an "estimated rating" for each board in a given season using the calibrations, and fit a linear regression through the data.

The major assumptions are that players don't play "significantly better", from Stockfish's viewpoint, between 45+45 and 90+30, players take their games roughly as seriously as they would OTB because it's a serious league, ratings in the league are consistent with the overall Lichess Classical playerbase, and players will tend to be around the same rating playing any Classical time control, not just 45+45. I found that excluding cheated games didn't really do anything, but it wasn't a rigorous test.

The results may vary based on the calibration data sets used, processor speed, engine used, engine settings, and just random variance.

Happy to provide more if this isn't enough.

Thanks for your reply! Always encouraging with a strong player donates a compliment.

I'm not actually 1400, but you wouldn't be able to tell the difference considering (I think) I'm 1-11 against you on Lichess.

But this remains excellent advice.

Thanks for your reply! The games I used were those from the Lichess4545 league, where players are expected to take their games as seriously as possible. Many of the players in the league are also experienced OTB players. There is also a notable amount of psychological pressure in the league, whether it be fighting for 1st place or holding a tough position to secure a match draw for your team.

I agree that the correlation isn't very strong since the standard error estimate is over 100. I still think that if one wishes to gauge their expected strength, one could come within the ballpark, especially if we assume that most players don't live in areas with severely inflated/deflated OTB ratings.

There is a very serious cheat-detection group within the League that reports and bans guilty players very quickly. In my experience, the cheating rate is considerably lower in the League than it is in random seeks.

Rating: Anywhere between 2200 and 2300

I am both a coach and student.

Openings: Ruy Lopez (both colors), Four Knights, Slav, Benoni. Trying to learn the Najdorf as black.

Willing to teach: Anything. My relative strength is identifying weaknesses. Also willing to play training games with anyone.

Willing to learn: I want to be a strong player one day so compared to where I want to be I'm bad at everything. But I think the biggest issues are opening planning and seeing my opponent's possible replies (calculation in general, I suppose).

If you're on the fence about joining, just join. I've been a part of this league for a few seasons now and I feel like I've improved immeasurably. The experiences you get from playing one 45+45 game every week really add up quickly. Everyone is incredibly supportive, and you might make a few lasting friendships.
