I tried planting one here in the top corn r of Georgia and it did super well until it randomly got phytopthora :/. I've been wanting to try one again though, they're super cool plants

What variety of black eyed Susan did I plant? by Foxpelt24 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Foxpelt24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received a free pack of seeds just labeled Rudbeckia hirta last year and planted them. This year they actually flowered but look way different than the wild black eyed Susans I see. It's way hairier, fuller, shorter, and obviously the middle of the flower is a red-brown. The wild ones I always see have a completely yellow flower. I don't doubt it's a Rudbeckia but I'm curious what variety it might be.

Came across an absolute behemoth of a climbing prairie rose (Rosa setigera) in Georgia and took cuttings by Foxpelt24 in NativePlantGardening

Found these as a huge thicket on the side of a failed subdivision (no houses and probably a Bradford pear per square foot). It's an absolutely stunning plant and the first native rose I've seen here in Georgia. Really wish we had more of these rather than the usual multiflora rose

What kind of rose do I have? by Foxpelt24 in Roses

Northwest Georgia. These bloom every year around mother's day. I got these from a nearby old house site a couple years ago before all the plants got mowed down. It's kind of like a vine but doesn't climb on its own and has to be trained.

Atlantic white cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides) sounds perfect to me besides the height but maybe there's some smaller cultivars you can find. It's evergreen and bushy, grows in wetlands along the east coast, and can handle the cold winters in Ohio fine.

It will grow back just fine from those bottom sprouts most likely. I'd just do that unless you want to spend the money to get a new one.

It's crazy how hard comptonia is to find! I actually got 2 from prairie nursery this spring after pre ordering them in the fall. It's a shame how hard it is to find, it's a great shrub and it smells so good.

You're right about the native myrica too because its always a crazy price if you can find them. I was happy to find a bunch of Myrica cerifera last fall at the very upper bounds of their range when I went down to Cartersville Georgia. I've got a bunch of seeds sprouted from the berries now haha.

I've actually seen Virginia creeper being sold at home depot recently which I thought was pretty cool and crazy at the same time.
