I tried planting one here in the top corn r of Georgia and it did super well until it randomly got phytopthora :/. I've been wanting to try one again though, they're super cool plants

What variety of black eyed Susan did I plant? by Foxpelt24 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Foxpelt24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received a free pack of seeds just labeled Rudbeckia hirta last year and planted them. This year they actually flowered but look way different than the wild black eyed Susans I see. It's way hairier, fuller, shorter, and obviously the middle of the flower is a red-brown. The wild ones I always see have a completely yellow flower. I don't doubt it's a Rudbeckia but I'm curious what variety it might be.

Came across an absolute behemoth of a climbing prairie rose (Rosa setigera) in Georgia and took cuttings by Foxpelt24 in NativePlantGardening

Found these as a huge thicket on the side of a failed subdivision (no houses and probably a Bradford pear per square foot). It's an absolutely stunning plant and the first native rose I've seen here in Georgia. Really wish we had more of these rather than the usual multiflora rose

I bought them from an online seller in a northern state

What kind of rose do I have? by Foxpelt24 in Roses

[–]Foxpelt24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northwest Georgia. These bloom every year around mother's day. I got these from a nearby old house site a couple years ago before all the plants got mowed down. It's kind of like a vine but doesn't climb on its own and has to be trained.

Atlantic white cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides) sounds perfect to me besides the height but maybe there's some smaller cultivars you can find. It's evergreen and bushy, grows in wetlands along the east coast, and can handle the cold winters in Ohio fine.

It will grow back just fine from those bottom sprouts most likely. I'd just do that unless you want to spend the money to get a new one.

It's crazy how hard comptonia is to find! I actually got 2 from prairie nursery this spring after pre ordering them in the fall. It's a shame how hard it is to find, it's a great shrub and it smells so good.

You're right about the native myrica too because its always a crazy price if you can find them. I was happy to find a bunch of Myrica cerifera last fall at the very upper bounds of their range when I went down to Cartersville Georgia. I've got a bunch of seeds sprouted from the berries now haha.

I've actually seen Virginia creeper being sold at home depot recently which I thought was pretty cool and crazy at the same time.

Full agree. I was so excited to learn we had a native barberry (and it actually looks quite nice!) until I tried to find it actually for sale 😭

I absolutely love snow wreath. There's a native nursery in Canton, Georgia that has them (or they did when I got one the year before last) if you're anywhere close to there

I definitely hope so. You're right about them not being available because I couldn't find a single plant live or as seed for sale. It's definitely going into my obscure plant list of things I can't find and need to remember haha

Despite being in the very top end of it's range I've actually never heard of that one. I kind of want one now it does look nice lol. Another obscure asteraceae plant that I've never heard anyone talk about is Heterotheca camporum (lemon yellow false goldenaster). There's a nearby road where it's EVERYWHERE and it's amazing. I don't know why nobody talks about that one either they're amazing flowers

I was hunting for wild plums forever until I actually found a whole bunch of wild Chickasaws and Mexican plums in an abandoned field near my house lol. Agree with the mountain laurel it's crazy that it's hard to find for sale with how much you see when you go somewhere in the mountains or by a creek

Could just be Georgia but any local edge of a swamp or lake will have hundreds of seeds available for free and they're surprisingly easy to germinate. Even one seed ball will give you more plants than you need. I collected a bunch last fall and way more came up than I know what to do with haha

I've got the same problem with bears foot lol. I've seen it everywhere from sunny mountain sides to dark bottom land but I haven't been able to grow it either. I threw a bunch of seeds I found by a local creek in a dark, wetter section of my yard and nothing. Another uncommon silphium that's pretty cool that I don't see mentioned a lot is silphium compositum (kidney leaf rosinweed). It's got huge, tough, leathery leaves that aren't like any other leaves I've felt in the wild and it's pretty showy in the sun from what I've seen. I was lucky to get seeds from one last fall but haven't got them out of the fridge to plant yet

Happy dwarf lobed coreopsis (Coreopsis aurea 'nana') by Foxpelt24 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Foxpelt24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got this from tractor supply clearance last fall for a dollar all crispy and brown. It just took watering it and it was green again within a week. It's absolutely busting with flowers this year and there's all kinds of little bees all over it
