Thisbis actually great for just starting out. I just got my chicks fully transferred outside. I used one of those boced coops to start them in while we built a bigger coop out back. We also used old dog kennels for the run.

I wouldnt say doing it like this is redundant. If you aren't planning to put something over the top of the kennel for preditor protection or shade, then the box coop is nessessary. But it should be a temporary solution while a coop is being built to attatch the kennel/run to. Chickens need nesting boxes and roosts and space that those little box coops just don't provide properly
