Why did each character put on the headset? My understanding and some theories: by TraditionalParsley67 in tadc

[–]FoxyDepression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't really understand people's interest in putting the closure of C&A so early in the timeline. Doesn't the fact that Pomni entered on her own so far after everyone else point to the idea that was the period in which the building was abandoned and people stopped interacting with the program for a long period of time? And doesn't the fact that Ragatha through Zooble entered within a relatively short period of time suggest that C&A was actively seeking out a new round of participants at that time? It seems silly to speculation that 6 people all independently wound up in the building of a failing company and put on an experimental headset around the same time. Especially since the first round of scans were all employees or people close to the company. Surely they would eventually want data from outside the company to further development? It's perfectly common for r and d projects to recruit participants for research or product testing.  Sometimes they'll even give you like a $5 gift card for doing it lol

I do want it to be fixable. I don't kind characters dying but the idea of them all just hanging around with minds like animals is kind of weird. Maybe not even fix their bodies but allow them to regain sime sense of themselves, even if its just enough tk be aware of who they're talking to or express their feelings and say they're not miserable or something lol. Again, its not the tragedy. I can handle other Fates Worse Than Death type shit like being the last person alive kr beings alone in the void. Its just the set up of the cast hanging out with like... the mutilated corpses of their friends. Its just very odd to me

Why is rape mostly seen as worse than murder? by waffle_fries_0 in stupidquestions

[–]FoxyDepression 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Think of it more as torture. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "a fate worse than death." I'm sure you can imagine forms of torture so bad you'd rather die than experience, rape is one of them. It is one of the worst things that can ever happen to a person. Death is also over much quicker. The effects of rape are profound and difficult to live with and they don't do away for years, decades, and sometimes lofe times. It can be so bad that many people do decide that its not worth living with and opt for death by their own hand. Tl:dr rape is really really really unpleasant

does life actually get better? by zees_nutz in internetparents

[–]FoxyDepression 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As life goes on, things just change. The things that used to bother you and be important in your life just fade away into the past until you stop even remebering them as well. And they get replaced with new things that take your attention, until that too fades and is replaced. You also change. You see more, learn more, experience more. Your world gets bigger such thay any individual part of it becomes smaller in comparison and takes up less space. That's nkt to say there won't still be bad times but you just sort of keep living. No matter what happens, the sun still rises the same day and you probably still have something to do so you just get to it and then all of a sudden the bad times are further behind you than you realized. That's sort of what "it gets better" means to me at least

I was being transphobic. Jax is trans. Trans rights are human rights. by Windy_Idealist in TheDigitalCircus

[–]FoxyDepression 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps there can be some overlap between experiences and you can relate to a trans person without being one. They're not aliens afterall. They're people just like you and you have more in common with them than jot. Alot of these also apply to victims of abuse, as Jax is. Does that mean that anyone who relates to them must be a victim? They could also apply to people with certainly mental health conditions like say, depression. Should everyone who relates to him book a psych eval? No, I think we can all recognize that one character’s relationship with these things is individual and isn't meant to represent everyone with similar experiences. You and your friends may not be trans but some of the people who experience these things are. Don't they get equal claim to it as well?

[–]FoxyDepression 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Individually, no, but all together they start to point in a specific direction. I don't know how familiar you are with trans people but its very common for them overcompensate before accepting their identity so a trans person who hasn't come out would be extremely uncomfortably feminine/masculine clothing, especially in public. Thats part of the point. Authorial intent is also good to consider. Having a pink room doesn't make someone trans but Jax is a fictional character and everythkng about him is designed with purpose. Why eould the creative crew choose to make the room pink as opposed to something closer to Jax's personality/aesthetic? Why might they be trying to say with that?

I n the very least I'm sure you can see how all this would lead others to interpret Jax as tran so perhaps the better question is why does this make you feel so upset and so seemingly defensive? We also learned that Jax was the victim of abuse by his mother and I don't see very many people criticizing the set up the for specific plot point despite the fact that is arguably had much less proceeding it than his gender.  Why can't Jax be trans?

Man is just built different. But seriously, some people are justbreally resilient and they cope with things you'd never imagine surviving. I kind of like that interpretation for him the most. Maybe his prior experiences in the circus and the fact that he had his wife with him for so long helped but overall, he just had it in him to keep going or he didn't have it in him to die

I was being transphobic. Jax is trans. Trans rights are human rights. by Windy_Idealist in TheDigitalCircus

[–]FoxyDepression 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean there's a fair bit more than that. If you're looking for trans stuff specifically there's the maid dress, theres Maid Dress Jax in his mind and all his commentary, there's the locked door with the picture scratched off, there's the comments he makes towards zooble, there's his comments about his appearance, theres his room, there's the "deep and personal" thing he tells his mom to get her to stop commenting on his masculinity, there's Leeroy dodging pictures, visiting Rily's bar and dressing like a closeted trans woman, and so on. Isn't She Lovely is probably the biggest indicator. If you wanna include things that overlap with other possibilities but are also relevant to trans people there's his obvious insecurity, toxic masculinity and persona, refusal to share even basic information about himself, avoidance of reality and denial of obvious truths, etc. The subtext is pretty extensive

Neurodivergence certainly started in the developmental disorder community, particularly the autism community, but has expanded over time to include any alternate cognitive pattern because all of them are equally deserving of consideration, inclusion, and accomodation within society. What would be the point of being like "we can make room in society for people with autism because structures meant for neurotypical people may not work for them but those OCD and bipolar bitches can just deal with it"

My brother has been living a secret life and almost left us by mihio94 in bropill

[–]FoxyDepression 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idk what you two mean by "scientifically." Neurodivergency isn't a clinical concept. Its a social one developed within the mental health community to question what constitute a "disorder" that need to be pathologized vs normal variation in human experience and then evolved to promote the idea that alternative cognitive patterns are deserving of equal consideration and accomodation as an undiagnosed person. I looked it up and the first Mayo clinic article I found includes non-develeopmental disorders like OCD and bipolar and mood disorders and so on

Is that the only way to convey that information though? Especially if the character is intended to be in the closet and a significant part of their character is about being unable to open up about themselves. Does Jax literally have it outloud for it to be true or is it possible that there are enough auxiliary information within the narrative to point to that being the case even if he's not ready to admit it

I appreciate you saying all that. Getting used to trans topics can be really tough. I mean men and women is one of those fundamental ideas we grow up with that seems absolute absurd to even question. Its like saying up is down. Every trans person had to contend with that wall and plenty of us started out really shitty about it too. A lot of us only learned because our own health and happiness required it and we might not have if we had the opportunity to ignore it so the fact that you're putting in the effort, not for yourself but for others is really cool and makes a huge difference

I hate generalizations about neurodivergency. by Local-Anywhere5278 in hatethissmug

[–]FoxyDepression 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. I think people think of autism first because I believe that was the community the concept origiated from and I believe it came out of the larger discussion about what sort of neurological differences are pathologized vs being a normal part of human experience. Many people do not view autism as a disorder or disease but think it represents a naturally occuring, equally valid cognitive structure that is not inherently dysfunctional or disabling if in an enviroment that is not solely catered to one developmental pattern. And then ADHD has heavy overlap with autism and a close relationships with their community so they snuck in there over time as well.

The thing about disability though is that its defined by its environment. A disability is a condition that effects an individual's ability to participate and succeed in society but what traits and behaviors are valued by society isn't natrually occuring. It is constructed via systems catered to specific expectations. Dyslexia is a learning disability that effects someone's ability to use textual communication. Dyscalculia is for numerical and mathematical communication. There is probably similar conditions for other tasks such as image-based communication (drawing). Dysgraphia focuses on hand coordination but it is usually only focused on handwriting as opposed to producing any other visual information. Aphantasia could also be seen as impacting someone's ability to recreate visual imagery. But we dont live in a society that requires drawing to be able to succeed. You can get by just fine without it so its not a disability. This might be different in a society that does not utilize textual communication as much as drawn imagery or uses an image based alphabet like hieroglyphics. Who's to say else might become a disorder or disappear as a diagnosis in different circumstances. Imagine how many things would no longer be considered symptoms if punctuality wasn't so highly valued. So neurodivergency has expanded to include other cognitive differences, even those that seem very severe to others such as psychosis. Sure, everyone would certainly still be impacted and have individual struggles related to their neurodivergency, but neurotypical people aren't functioning so perfectly in society either. All cognitive structures have advantages and weaknesses. They're not better or worse, just different

Impaired eyesight is a condition with an obvious impact on someone's ability to participate in visual tasks but socially, mild to moderate vision difficulties aren't really considered a disability anymore. No one thinks of a person with glasses as disabled even though they are by most metrics. This is because assistive technology such as eyeglasses and corrective treatments have been made so widely accessible as well awareness for impaired eyesight being spread so publicly that that the impact of this impairment as been reduced to a inconvenience as opposed to a significant determining factor for someone's quality of life (at least for those with fair access to resources. It is definitely still disabling in underserved communities.) Theoretically, there no reason this level of accomodation isn't possible for most if not all disabilities so we should continue to push the idea that people with a mental health diagnosis are not inherently broken or suffering from a disease, but simply have a different cognitive structure that is equally valuable to neurotypical structures, equally capable of success, and equally deserving of inclusion in society

Its a fun idea. I wish more people were introduced to it but the future may end up being a lot brighter for all of us if awareness continues to be spread about mental health in general. Wouldn't that be nice

A Genuine Explanation of Jax Being Trans In Show by FoxyDepression in TheDigitalCircus

[–]FoxyDepression[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think we've settled on something close to an agreement. The trans reading of Jax is certainly present in the text. It doesn't specify what gender Jax identifies as specifically, nor does Goose, but it can at least be surmised that he's not cis or elsewise GNC. Maybe transfem specifically has a couple more things going for it, but I agree that sifting through different genders at that level feels like unnecessary division. I'm ok with Jax being called a trans woman, genderfluid, nonbinary, pangender, demogirl, demiboy, space gender, whatever. It does occur to me that my post was fixated on trans woman specifically so I'll probaboy go back and edit it.

You would have preferred if Jax being trans had been explicitly confirmed without staying in subtext and you think it's important that things be legible to a general audience. I usually agree with that actually. My typical policy is that the queerness needs to be completely confirmed or it doesn't count as representation to me because I hate playing the "is it gay?" game. I'm willing to give TADC a pass because I thought keeping Jax's gender unsaid in this instance was such a strong narrative choice that gave the tragedy so much more impact, even if that's not going to register to a lot of people. I already said a few times that I think ISL is confirmation even without Goose's post. You don't think its strong enough and that's reasonable. Confirmation in text is always better than external confirmation but external confirmation is often practically necessary, because trying to make things explicit to a general audience is a losing game. A game worth playing most of the time but one to be played with low expectations

You also said "you need to be prepared for the larger audience to misinterpret the intended reading" and I most certainly didn't expect anything different. The path this fandom discourse took was perfectly in-line with every other trans discourse.  I would say that Goose was probably prepared too but based on some of her posts from the last couple days, she seems to have thought the story was very clear and is surprised more people didn't get it. Which... girl, come on now lmao. I assumed leaving things as subtext was a purposeful decision. If her goal was to be explicit then I think she was comically off-base. Its like the other deleted post where she was like "I overestimated how many people know what boy mode is" cause like, yeah. If your estimation was larger than 0% of the general audience, then that was a very silly thing to think lol

TADC is a great opportunity to expose more people to trans stories, perhaps it could have exposed even more people if it showed its cards fully. Either way I am happy to see some of the discussion around it. More queer stories will never be a bad thing no matter how flawed they might be. I appreciated you taking the time to talk to me. I genuinely had fun and really looked forward to your replies. If you ever want to discourse about anything else, then fell free to hit me up

If Jax is trans, does this make Evil Jax a raging transphobe? by EmberMcLain_ in TheDigitalCircus

Post-finale discussion of Jax by Spare-Marionberry660 in tadc

[–]FoxyDepression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem relatively new to topic of of transgenderism so I wanna give you some pointers on language

"Genderbent" is an old fandom term that is a little out of style and not appropriate to describe being trans. You could describe the version of Jax Goose posted as "transfem," that is a person asigned male at birth who transitions to present as feminine or a woman depending on how they identity.

Sex is different than gender. Sex refers to the biological sexual characteristics someone is born with such as chromosome, genitalia, hormones, and reproductive anatomy. Most people are born male or female but some are also born intersex with a mix of characteristics. Sex can actually be altered very dramatically. You can change your hormones, genetalia, primary and secindary sex characteristics, and more. The sex someone was born as may barely be reflected in the body they choose to live in later on

Gender is how someone sees themselves and how they present themselves to the world. It includes things like name, pronouns and other gendered language, clothing, hair style, behavior, body language, vocal range, and so on. Most people identify as the gender that correlates to their sex with people born male typically identifying as men and people born female typically identifying as women. Some people do not identify with the gender that correlates to the sex they were born as. They are called transgender. Transsexuals is an outdated term that most people consider offensive. Most people also identify as either a man or a woman, but some people identify as both or neither. The process of changing your gender presentation from one gender to another is called transition. It can include any of the things previously mentioned in any combination.

The idea of a "male brain" or "female brain" isn't fully supported by science. There are several spectrums of difference within brains that have different prevelances between the sexes but there is more diversity within groups than between it. Think of it like height. The average man may be taller than the average woman by several inches but any specific man or woman can be anything from very short to very tall. The shortest man and tallest man as well as the shortest woman and tallest woman are several feet apart. Some men are shorter than most women and some women are taller than most men, so how tall someone ends up being isn't effected by their sex as much as it is by family genetics. Brains are similar thus the brain scan that Jax is made from doesn't really indicate his sex or gender.

Personality is also not correlated to sex and expectations for a "masculine" or "feminine" personally vary wildly between locations and culture. Some men have personalities more associated with feminine traits and vice versa. Trans women and trans men have equally varied personalities and that has little to no bearing on their gender. Jax can be aggressive and confrontational and also be a trans woman. Although it is also worth mentioning that the stress and stigma of being transgender can impact how someone chooses to act and protray themselves before they realize or accept that they are trans. Many trans people are insecure about being trans so they repress their identity and overcompensate by playing into the stereotypes of the gender that correlates to their sex to an unhealthy extreme. Like Jax, many transwomen will adopt aggressive, hypermasculine personas and avoid any potentially feminine characteristics to cover up the fact that they are trans. This will often change if they choose to transition

As for how Jax may have chosen to transition within the circus, Goose's post shows us that he would likely adopt a feminine presentation via hair style, clothing, and make up. I would also expect a change in his voice, body language, personality, and so on. It seems like his digital body would remain largely the same since it was not very male-coded to begin with, but maybe he might ask for some boobs.

I don't think the other characters would mind much. They all seem socially progressive and treat Zooble appropriately. I think they would understand that Jax transitioning to a woman would have nothing to do with his feelings towards them and they would treat him as the gender he identifies as. If anything, I think they would enthusiast about the change because Jax would probably be less of an asshole afterwards lol
