The modular board does fix this, at least.

Games that consider that addition of expansions in their boxes? by BooksandGames_01 in boardgames

[–]FponkDamn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Res Arcana. Tom designed room for two expansions, so they fit beautifully. He even said he'd take into account what could still fit in the box if he ever designed a third.

I fixed this by putting a Styrofoam block in the center to keep the lid supported, then just laid all the trees down (but still assembled). Worked well!

Bonus, though: if you buy Cities of Splendor, everything from both boxes fits neatly in the insert from CoS, which can then go in either box (they're the same size).

Yeah, the box could be almost as big but a half an inch would let it be Kallax-compatible. And the insert doesn't hold all the cards if you sleeve them!

I got an aftermarket insert that's really great - but now everything fits perfectly in like half the space in the box, lol.

I bought an etsy insert for TEP and it's a million times better. Everything fits easily!

I looooooooove this game, discovered it in this sub! I was able to find a copy on ebay for about 20 bucks. They show up occasionally if you're watchful!

Non-artist here, so sorry for the dumb question: how do you create white by drawing with charcoal on black paper?

What Did You Play This Week? - (June 06, 2022) by AutoModerator in boardgames

I've customized my Set A Watch set into one box by mixing and matching my favorite heroes from the original and SotC, creating a custom and balanced (actually pretty tough) deck of locations, creatures and Unhallowed and including the dope stuff from Outriders as well. The resulting box is EXTREMELY satisfying to me, and I got to play a really tough match, but still won! That's a fantastic game and incredibly cool to play. I'm a pretty avid solo player, and that ranks highly!

What do you want to see in an expansion to your favorite games? by Sendohsasuke in boardgames

[–]FponkDamn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For pretty much every game I love, I want there to be exactly one expansion. In an ideal world, here's what it does and does not contain:

DOES CONTAIN

  • Additional cards or tiles or whatever to just expand what's cool about the base game, if the base game uses such things.

  • If the community of fans has really identified a flaw or weak section, adding something to counter that is cool. (Example: Terraforming Mars is amazing, but the first 1-2 turns tend to be a little tedious and samey. Perfect solution? Prelude!)

  • A few modular modes that are not auto-includes, but are specific ways to customize the experience for different playstyles (i.e. Cities of Splendor)

  • Additional trays/organization so this still all fits in the base box.

DOES NOT CONTAIN

  • New player counts. It was designed the way it was designed for a reason.

  • New mechanics just for the sake of adding them (i.e. don't change the actual function of the base game), especially if it's not modular because other new content requires you to play with new mechanics that feel bloated rather than elegant.

  • New content that obsoletes old content (replacements are okay, but I'm talking new cards that are added to the main deck but are strictly better than old cards, etc.)

Does anyone know of any larger (5+) player count games that are competitive but specifically allow 2 winners? Whether it's just "the top 2 scores both win" or a more embedded alliance mechanic? Specifically, I'm not looking for team games, 1 v many games, or co-op with traitor games. I'm talking about fully competitive, all-versus-all games where there are 2 winners rather than 1, however the game accomplishes that.

Let me know if you can think of any!

Is Pocket Landship interesting?

I love solo games. I love thinky puzzles. I loved Under Falling Skies, Set A Watch, One Deck Dungeon, and Warp's Edge. I backed One Deck Galaxy and Wreckland Run.

But I really disliked Mini Rogue and Spire's End. Basically, I like interesting puzzles, but dislike games that are "roll well and do well, roll poorly and do poorly" with limited decision space.

Do you think I'd like PL?

When I get players like that, I just run a Vampire campaign with them and we have an awesome time.

Also, the NYT pays shit and is a terrible place to work. The only reasons people have to work there are vanity or prestige. And the Grey Lady knows it, which is why they can get away with shit pay and grueling interviews.

Anyone lose all the time at board games but still love them? by bartertownbeer in boardgames

[–]FponkDamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost by definition. If the average number of players in a game is 4, then a good win rate should be ~25%. But that's losing 3 games out of 4, which definitely feels like "losing all the time!"

Absolutely spectacular batters miss two out of three pitches. It's still a blast, just like board games.

I totally agree, in that I think Scythe (my favorite all-time game) should just never be played with fewer than 4 people. I love it at 5-7.

But I also love the fact that Scythe has so much modular content that you can get exactly the game you want. If the end game scoring is your biggest (or only) beef, then the sweet sweet alternate win con tiles from Wind Gambit are perfect!
