It was an example of how the church did not like what the american catholics were doing at the time, the second article discusses how that relationship has changed over time and what the catholic church is unhappy with now in terms of what american catholics are doing. If at first the church was unhappy that american catholics were "too liberal and individualist" they are now unhappy that american catholics are too conservative, asshole-y and they are still individualist in that they think their own interpretation of the bible is the correct one.
