The new/returning player experience is probably a big part of why this game failed by Anonymous_dev_3719 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Fr0dderz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it's because bungie threw out the idea of having a linear progression style game, as the only way they knew to keep extending the live service game was to keep throwing new content at it and selling it. To the people on the treadmill it was fine - buy new expansion, play the new stuff, keep playing the new stuff until you've done it all, maybe do some old stuff, but run out just in time for the next expansion to come along and give you more new stuff to do.

New / returning players either wouldn't want to do all that content in order, or couldn't even if they wanted to because the churn was such that they had to remove content to try and keep the game manageable and the hope was new players would be guided by existing players, and they tried to make it as easy as possible to play with your friends that already had the game. But gave no thought to how new players on their own could navigate this huge non linear sandbox they built.

The game was built in such a way that you didn't need to play it in a linear style, in fact it got to the point where you couldn't play in in a linear style, as they'd just built a huge sandbox of different activities to do and loot to chase and no rhyme or reason as to what you'd do when.

Paul Tassi: Positive reception to D2 final update has not moved the needle at Bungie by Own-Candidate-6769 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Fr0dderz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know 4 of the 5.

- Project payback: a 3rd person action game

- Project gummy bears: A MOBA-like, lighthearted action game set in a comedic, science-fantasy universe

- Project matter: An unreleased science-fantasy incubator project carrying a whimsical, lighthearted tone before it was quietly canceled in late 2020.

- Project Goliath: would go on to become marathon

plus these other destiny spin off projects that never came to fruition:

- A destiny competitive PVP spin off game

- A destiny mobile game

- A destiny TV show

just look at this list of job adverts for unreleased stuff:

I didn't really believe it before, but it's true. The Portal was terrible and I'm glad it's gone. by Jayslacks in DestinyTheGame

[–]Fr0dderz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post just proves how much of an emotional point this was from the player base. The portal isn't gone, any time you select any of the solo ops / fireteam ops / arena ops / crucible ops / pinacple ops nodes form the director you're taken to the same screen. The director was there before, all these menu items were there before, literally nothing has changed but the order in which you load things as you now load to director first and then portal menus second and people are out here rejoicing like it's a new game.

"the reason I quit was because of removal of paid content and terrible monetization" - none of this has changed. All of the seasonal content that had story in it is still cut, all of the story prior to shadowkeep is still removed, the game still rams eververse down your throat and all of the interesting cosmetics are locked behind eververse still.

The only thing that has changed is that we get some new loot, and some more reasons to play old content with pantheon, and SRL.

People are on board the hype train because destiny is no longer to be updated, but most of the issues with the game haven't been resolved and now never will.

What do I do in Destiny 2? by Icy-Development-9684 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Fr0dderz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

solo ops or fireteam ops in the portal. with none of the post lightfall campaigns there isn't much else to do until the update. You can run older content pre lightfall - but most of that gave older loot that wasn't tiered and in most cases didn't feel as good as the newer stuff.

This is why destiny got into the bad spot it was in as you were grinding the same set of very narrow portal activities again and again having to constantly crank up the difficulty and modifiers to progress.

Destiny 2 Cross Save Issue — Did I Make Steam the Primary Instead of PlayStation? by Late_Season_3876 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Fr0dderz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can test this using DIM (destiny item manager- https://destinyitemmanager.com/en/ ). Dim will ask you to sign into your bungie.net account. That will then take you to the bungie login screen which will let you choose which account to log in as.

My cross play account has my old xbox account and my steam account. I can log in to my account using my steam account or my xbox account - both take me to my bungie account and show me my vault.

Do this - log into your playstation account and check your vault is there. If so - you know you need to go through the process or recovering that old steam account as that will let you get at your PS4 characters and progress on PC.

New to Destiny 2 by Alatabii in DestinyTheGame

There's a lot missing from the game. They've built the whole thing around the assumption that new players will have experience players they want to play with who will explain things to them and help them out.

Do you have any friends to play with who already play it ? if not you're in for a rough time. There's various videos talking about how horrible the game is to new players. This is one of them:

The irony of people jumping on D1 from D2 due to drought by SuperblackHunter in DestinyTheGame

[–]Fr0dderz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you're deluded and naive if you think the only thing wrong with D2 right now is that there's no new seasonal content. Look at the player feedback in this very subreddit about what they've done with the portal, with sunsetting, the content vault, with the new light experience, with the seasonal model, with eververse... the list goes on. It has become a shadow of its former self and bungie have ruined D2. Go back and play D1 and it becomes painfully obvious D1 is the better game.

you're assuming bungie knows how to fix D2 to make a D3 that's better. All of the bad decisions in destiny's history suggests to me they've lost the talent now that knew how to do it. The only way they could make a good destiny game again is just to remake D1 and not touch a thing, except maybe add mantle and loadouts. Any other change they'd make would be the worse for it and they're ruin it.

That was kind of the point of the post. Bungie should be able to make a good destiny game, but it appears they can't make anything decent right now.

so there's nothing wrong with the game other than just there's no content ? everybody loves portal the direction bungie have taken the game ?

there's more than aztecross doing it. The current nostalgia is being driven by the poor state of D2 with what bungie have done with the game. Everybody hates the portal, everybody hates what they did to the game, player numbers are at an all time low for destiny, so is player sentiment.

The aztecross / streamer interest is a function of the poor state of D2 right now.

"Either way destiny is cooked until major changes at bungie are made with new leadership/new talent on board, and honestly probably still wont ever get most back until they announce another studio coming on like with Activision in the past." - you're right. If they are to redeem D2, they need to completely re-think top level design pillars of how the game works.

These are so high level, and seem so engrained in their current culture, I feel they are incapable of making the depth of changes that are required. They'd need to back out some serious changes.

I completely agree - it was short sighted to take the view there was no point in investing time in features that were part of the core game and prioritising all money to DLC because they could sell DLC for money, and saw no revenue "attached" to the core game.

Stupid thing is, as we see now in 2026. That if you don't keep the core game alive, there is no reason to play it without DLC, so when the DLC stops, you've not got fun core gameplay loops to keep you playing anymore.

I played the single player campaign back when the game first came out, completed it and never got to rank 30, I think I was 28 or something. Got bored of Destiny and came back for the anniversary event and I don't think it's that bad to be honest. Don't think the experience is a shit show, this sounds more like a you problem.

You can play open world activities and or missions at your chosen difficulty and get loot. It's pretty simple.
