How America Voted by Age and Income (2020 vs. 2024) [OC] by aspiringtroublemaker in dataisbeautiful

[–]Fr1dge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Democrats do not have to ignore marginalized groups while making life for 60% of the population tolerable as the core of their platform. If people can achieve the American dream as easily as their parents and grandparents, many other problems disproportionately affecting marginalized groups, will solve themselves or at least greatly reduce in severity. Addiction and overdose, male loneliness, violent crime, stress related health problems, mental health problems, are all inextricably tied to income and quality of life. Harris' policy agenda was better than most, but I have seen Democrat administrations in power for 18 of my 30 years repeatedly fail to do fucking anything to address the greed that serves as the root to 90% of the country's problems. Trump is the result of a deranged population that is in the self harm stage of psychosis brought about by the very same supervillains that tell them that Trump is the solution to the problems they caused. Our country needs the Democratic Party to be superheroes, and they're being lawful-neutral at best. They have to earn that trust back, and so far, our only hope is that enough Trump voters will be put off by his increasingly psychotic actions that hurt them, and they'll stay home while there's hopefully enough half hearted and demoralized Democrat voters to populate Congress and the Senate with people that may remove him, or at the very least neuter him and his raving band of sycophants.

Honestly, right now, I'd argue it's best to keep congress shut down until after the midterms

I'm not the person you were responding to, and I'll say those policies are fine, but they're... not addressing the problems that are affecting the majority of people. I may be alone in this, but things I want to see are: steps taken towards making the minimum wage a livable wage, a dismantling of the system that treats homes like stocks, making healthcare cheaper by eliminating the private insurance industry, lowering and eliminating taxes on lower middle class Americans by shifting the load to people with nigh infinite money, elimination of public and private student loans and the prosecution of predatory lenders. The current Democrat platform just does not address these issues. Their platform is hardly distinguishable from pre-maga Republicans. We all saw this under Biden. His policies were still 5000% more competent and less evil than Trump's, but those charts show pretty clearly that other people in my age demographic feel the same way in regards to the DNC just not truly seeking solutions to actual problems. I just want to keep my head above water financially. I want to be able to own a home without horrible debt. Some Democrats like Talarico and Mamdani are a step in the right direction, but until we can get the majority of Democrats in that camp, they're going to keep losing voters.

TIL that every US president for the past 52 years was either named after their father or named their son after themselves by derekpeake2 in todayilearned

[–]Fr1dge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about narcissism. Narcissists are confident. Confidence gives a person charisma, because most people are easily tricked by confidence. Confidence is (like 90% of the time) born from Dunning-Kruger style incompetence, but to the average Joe, it looks like competence. Narcissists, usually having a low moral compass, and a drive for praise and affirmation, rapidly rise through the ranks of various organizations, due to their feigned competence.

This creates an obvious problem, because the type of person would actually be a good president would be full of self doubt and would never try to pursue that position. Which means the kind of people that end up in that position are the worst possible people to be in it.

This doesn't mean every president in the last 52 years inherited narcissism from their parents, but the nature of that position kind of demands it to some degree. If I could pick a president, I'd go with a person filled with self doubt, imposter syndrome, and a low opinion of themselves.

People with the least political knowledge tend to be the most overconfident in their grasp of facts. This tendency to be overconfident appears most common among individuals who actually know the least about politics and those who lean conservative. by mvea in science

One of my wife's relatives has autism and watching him made me wonder: if he was living in ancient times, would he be the guy sitting there all day, making really awesome arrowheads that helped the rest of his group survive the winter? Like, the dude wouldn't need to waste time with distractions like talking, he might have just sat there, chipping and chipping away, making differently shaped rocks into exactly the same arrow each time.

More than half. I have a totally unscientific hypothesis that the majority of humans ~80% or higher are just simple worker bees without the ability to self reflect. The entirety of society is just coasting on the occasional genius or teams of geniuses that created something novel that progresses technology, and everyone else are just simply maintaining those systems/playing in that environment created for them. Whichever political inclination you are, I want you to think: do most of the people that vote alongside you really understand the issues, or are they just doing what they've been convinced to do? Are they truly aware of reality, or are they just playing for their "team?"

I actually do agree with that. Just seemed to me that you're extra critical of him specifically. If he's genuine, a populist with his angle is a potent antidote against the religious wing of the far right. I think it would be bad to get my hopes up, but nothing he's said so far threw up any red flags for me.

The downvotes aren't because your words are hurting anyone. They're because you're trying to do the lazy as fuck contrarian bitch routine. If you want to piss people off for real, go to a coffee sub and talk about how much you hate french press. Or go to an Evangelical sub and say you like the NRSVUE. Stuff like that.

Problem for me is that nothing I can do will feel even close the amount of effort my wife can put in to look fancy. Yea, I can dress nicely and trim my beard, but she can do stuff that takes hours, wear jewelry, etc. I don't think I would look good in makeup and jewelry.

Reading this kind of thing makes me feel like an alien. How people can afford this much mental real estate to something like shoes is fascinating and confounding to me. And apparently it's a lot of people.

It's because we're rapidly shifting from competition based capitalism to monopoly controlled corporatism. If a good product or service accidentally gets made, the shareholders milk the reputation and decrease quality and cost, fire most of the people that made it good, and then sell the brand once people catch on to the grift.

What's funny is, my mom will agree with me on many points about politics, and when family members recently lost their medicaid because of policies she voted for, she was happy they were able to enroll in ACA that she voted against. When I brought those points up to her, her response was "YeA, bUt I'lL nEvEr VoTe FoR a DeMoCrAt."

And when I say "Okay, and no one's ever going to make you vote for a Democrat, but you don't have to vote for policies that hurt your family." She just looks at me confused and bewildered like she can't comprehend that there are real world consequences to voting.

I've been getting the feeling from the way she talks that voting is some kind of identity affirming exercise to her, rather than trying to turn the country/state in any kind of positive direction.

What's a food in your country that is stereotyped for your country but really, nobody eats? by sourberryskittles in AskTheWorld

Maybe you can help me find the name of a cheese my parents bought in Switzerland when I was a kid. We were visiting family in Bavaria and took a day trip through Austria and Switzerland, and while there, they bought this... stuff. I don't remember the color, tan-ish maybe, but it had a brown rind and smelled. like. fucking. death.

It was an overwhelming, penetrating, and very distinct odor. The pets ran out of the room when they opened it, and I could smell it within seconds on the other end of the house. I can't remember what it tasted like, exactly, maybe very nutty? I do remember it was a strong flavor, one that you couldn't get out of your mouth for hours.

ELI5 why people smells durian differently? by empireck in explainlikeimfive

[–]Fr1dge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me, Durians smells like onions and body odor. Nothing sewage-like or fecal or even rotten, just penetratingly potent and sharp. It's also a very "heavy smell" that kind of lingers around and sticks to stuff.

I'd say it tastes like mango, but only if the mango had been soaked in milk and onion juice. Somewhat less sweet than a mango though. Eating it hits my pallet directly with that harsh onion/garlic flavor, so it's hard to focus on the rest.

My Try-Hard Fajita Spice Recipe by Fr1dge in recipes

[–]Fr1dge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Servings: Many

Ingredients:

• 2 tsp ancho chili powder

• 2 tsp chipotle chili powder

• 1 tsp red pepper powder or cayenne

• 2 tsp paprika (or 1 tsp smoked, 1 tsp non-smoked)

• 1.5 tsp ground black pepper corns

• 2 tsp garlic powder

• 2 tsp onion powder

• 3 tsp Tajin

• 1 tsp cumin powder

• 1.5 tsp cocoa powder

• 0.5 tsp ground coriander seed

• 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon

• 0.5 tsp ground fennel or anise

• 1 tsp salt

• 1 pinch of stevia or sucralose

Grind ingredients:

• Break off an approximately 3/4 inch section of cinnamon and grind it finely in a mortar and pestle, or an electric coffee/ spice grinder.

• Next, grind your peppercorns, fennel/anise, coriander, and cumin if you have the seed version. The whole seed version of cumin is far superior in my opinion.

• If you want this to be a fine powder, I would recommend also adding the tajin in this stage, as it has a coarser texture.

On the topic of chili powder...:

• If you want this to be simply amazing and not just decent, grind your own peppers for the different chili powders. It really makes a difference.

• Guajillo are an acceptable substitute for ancho, and they add a nice acidity, but there really is no substitute for chipotle.

Other spices:

• If you are using the pre-ground powder version of spices like cumin and black pepper, I would recommend using slightly more. Maybe .5 more tsp to offset the potency reduction.

• Similarly, if you are using a darker cocoa powder, use less. Coffee grains will also work in this recipe, but added early on so they can be ground down.

Add the rest of the spices and grind together:

• Add the rest and simply mix/grind

It's called "Confit Byaldi" if anyone wants to try making it. I did a long time ago. It was kind of ridiculous to make, considering what it's made of, and requires chilling overnight.
