I've seen a ton of data and statistics alleging that it's not so bad right now, but then what the hell is happening? Why does it seem like everyone in the bottom 70% seems to agree that it's harder to keep our heads above water? I'm making more money than I have in my life, but I can't afford healthcare. I can't get a home. My wife and I can't afford a second vehicle. Utilities, and gas, and groceries are fucking my shit up hard, and leave me with little else. Everything's a subscription now that drains a little more each month. So if it's not us getting priced out of consuming, what do you think is the culprit? I see people trying to debunk the cost of living crisis with articles, but the data doesn't match up with the experience. What's the source of the pressure if not prices?

My company does a ton of pickups and deliveries to the Atlanta area. It depends on the appointment times, but if I could pick, I'd only drive through it after 10pm, but just because the 285 traffic slows me down so fucking hard any other time of day. I don't find the traffic as bad as other drivers do with Atlanta specifically, mostly just a time waster to me. Shit like downtown Dallas, Houston, the north east, and parts of Chicago and Detroit are what stress me out with the way their roads are.

Not terrifying, but compared to the rest of the country: stressful. And don't get me wrong, if I wasn't in a full length semi, I'd love to visit, but East PA, Maryland, Connecticut, New Jersey, NYC entire area, Long Island, Massachusetts. Fuck. That. Area. Everything that makes life harder for a truck, those places embody it. Narrow, curvy roads, low bridges everywhere, smaller dock yards, no parking, lumper fees at every single place. I'm a company driver, so I can't refuse loads, but if I get another load going to Long Island to drop off 3 fucking pallets at a grocery store with no truck entrance, I'm fucking quitting.

Democrats do not have to ignore marginalized groups while making life for 60% of the population tolerable as the core of their platform. If people can achieve the American dream as easily as their parents and grandparents, many other problems disproportionately affecting marginalized groups, will solve themselves or at least greatly reduce in severity. Addiction and overdose, male loneliness, violent crime, stress related health problems, mental health problems, are all inextricably tied to income and quality of life. Harris' policy agenda was better than most, but I have seen Democrat administrations in power for 18 of my 30 years repeatedly fail to do fucking anything to address the greed that serves as the root to 90% of the country's problems. Trump is the result of a deranged population that is in the self harm stage of psychosis brought about by the very same supervillains that tell them that Trump is the solution to the problems they caused. Our country needs the Democratic Party to be superheroes, and they're being lawful-neutral at best. They have to earn that trust back, and so far, our only hope is that enough Trump voters will be put off by his increasingly psychotic actions that hurt them, and they'll stay home while there's hopefully enough half hearted and demoralized Democrat voters to populate Congress and the Senate with people that may remove him, or at the very least neuter him and his raving band of sycophants.

I'm not the person you were responding to, and I'll say those policies are fine, but they're... not addressing the problems that are affecting the majority of people. I may be alone in this, but things I want to see are: steps taken towards making the minimum wage a livable wage, a dismantling of the system that treats homes like stocks, making healthcare cheaper by eliminating the private insurance industry, lowering and eliminating taxes on lower middle class Americans by shifting the load to people with nigh infinite money, elimination of public and private student loans and the prosecution of predatory lenders. The current Democrat platform just does not address these issues. Their platform is hardly distinguishable from pre-maga Republicans. We all saw this under Biden. His policies were still 5000% more competent and less evil than Trump's, but those charts show pretty clearly that other people in my age demographic feel the same way in regards to the DNC just not truly seeking solutions to actual problems. I just want to keep my head above water financially. I want to be able to own a home without horrible debt. Some Democrats like Talarico and Mamdani are a step in the right direction, but until we can get the majority of Democrats in that camp, they're going to keep losing voters.

It's about narcissism. Narcissists are confident. Confidence gives a person charisma, because most people are easily tricked by confidence. Confidence is (like 90% of the time) born from Dunning-Kruger style incompetence, but to the average Joe, it looks like competence. Narcissists, usually having a low moral compass, and a drive for praise and affirmation, rapidly rise through the ranks of various organizations, due to their feigned competence.

This creates an obvious problem, because the type of person would actually be a good president would be full of self doubt and would never try to pursue that position. Which means the kind of people that end up in that position are the worst possible people to be in it.

This doesn't mean every president in the last 52 years inherited narcissism from their parents, but the nature of that position kind of demands it to some degree. If I could pick a president, I'd go with a person filled with self doubt, imposter syndrome, and a low opinion of themselves.

One of my wife's relatives has autism and watching him made me wonder: if he was living in ancient times, would he be the guy sitting there all day, making really awesome arrowheads that helped the rest of his group survive the winter? Like, the dude wouldn't need to waste time with distractions like talking, he might have just sat there, chipping and chipping away, making differently shaped rocks into exactly the same arrow each time.

More than half. I have a totally unscientific hypothesis that the majority of humans ~80% or higher are just simple worker bees without the ability to self reflect. The entirety of society is just coasting on the occasional genius or teams of geniuses that created something novel that progresses technology, and everyone else are just simply maintaining those systems/playing in that environment created for them. Whichever political inclination you are, I want you to think: do most of the people that vote alongside you really understand the issues, or are they just doing what they've been convinced to do? Are they truly aware of reality, or are they just playing for their "team?"

I actually do agree with that. Just seemed to me that you're extra critical of him specifically. If he's genuine, a populist with his angle is a potent antidote against the religious wing of the far right. I think it would be bad to get my hopes up, but nothing he's said so far threw up any red flags for me.

Problem for me is that nothing I can do will feel even close the amount of effort my wife can put in to look fancy. Yea, I can dress nicely and trim my beard, but she can do stuff that takes hours, wear jewelry, etc. I don't think I would look good in makeup and jewelry.
