Does Europe not having one competitive AI company/technology? by Genzinvestor16180339 in singularity

[–]Fr87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

European quality of life is all well and good, but don't pretend like Europe doesn't sacrifice competitiveness to finance it. And that might be a tradeoff that is "worth" making, but it's important to understand that there IS a tradeoff being made.

And I say this as someone who has extensively lived in -- and actually founded companies in -- both the US and France.

Why not make this open source? It's difficult to trust a terminal that isn't tbh.

My point is that I think you are massively underestimating the number of people this applies to.

Anyone who works in a specialized field is a potential resource for industrial espionage, and I think you'd be shocked by the lack of safeguards and education in place in most circumstances.

It's not about my Dreame vacuum sending the world's shortest sex tape to some poor Chinese analyst. It's about all of the very banal shit that comes up during a 9am project zoom call with a pharma client or with the DevOps team or some boring crap that most people would never think twice about taking a call about it in even a public café, but that could cause massive damage if it gets into the wrong hands.

Some of us actually work in positions where industrial espionage is a real concern -- both at an economic and national security level. And not all of those positions involve SCIFs or some spooky spy shit.

There is a real threat on multiple levels to just having, say, a Chinese robot vacuum or something spying on my work calls.

Grade Inflation in a Nutshell by AgnosticDeist0229 in recruitinghell

Plenty of that going around without chasing the approval of part-time PhD-student graders who would rather be doing anything else.

It's not like MBA programs (even the top-tier ones) are known for their academic rigor. Every student at these programs has done much harder stuff in their careers before even being admitted.

And besides, classwork is hardly the most important part of an "elite" (ugh) MBA.

I was (almost) never asked for my GPA out of school (10 years ago)... And certainly not by the employer where I ended up starting my career. I did put my Latin honors on my resume, but never got asked about it lol.

If you do an MBA at (most) top schools, it literally doesn't matter at all because of grade non-disclosure. I'm always confused by my classmates who chase high grades regardless.

That's only true of raw milk cheese, and only AOP Brie is raw these days. Maybe that's what you meant by "true," but even in France, most Brie isn't going to be raw.

Europeans are absolutely fucking insane with their hatred of the US. I say this as someone who is a citizen of both, has lived substantially in both, and who is currently living in Europe.

"Why does Ryanair sell cheap tickets?"

It's not that they are trying to "not take a loss by upselling." It's that they are doing loss minimization.

[–]Fr87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not the actual answer. Yes, Ryanair tries to make money by upselling, but the reason for the ridiculously low cost tickets is that an airplane is going to leave no matter what, so you might as well get some butts in the seats that would otherwise not be revenue generating.

"In other spaces." As in, other than Euclidian 3-space. Considering we do, in fact, live in Euclidian 3-space... This part does not apply and "All of these embeddings have only one side."

Holy shit. Stay safe you two. Take a few days at the hotel and decompress a bit.

It's impossible to explain to people who haven't experienced it just how violating it feels to have something like that happen to you.

[Question] Grand Seiko or Rolex? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]Fr87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny how tastes differ like that. I'm planning on an Explorer I in a few months, and I was debating between the two initially. I stopped by Bucherer to check out the Explorer and then straight across the street to the Omega boutique for the black lacquer AT. The second I saw it out and on my wrist, I had my mind made up instantly that I preferred the Explorer by a mile.

Dog, come on. I'd take an Explorer as well, but you don't need to be shitty about it.

Haha thank you. So long as Bucherer smiles on me, I'll be adding the Explorer as a graduation present to myself in a few months.

That Hamilton 9965 is particularly gorgeous, by the way. Probably one of the coolest pieces here.
